Not only are they qualified in lifesaving & casualty care, but they are also highly trained, strong, and fit. They must be able to swim 200m in under 3½ minutes & run 200m on sand in under 40 seconds👏

The RNLI is the charity that saves lives at sea. 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, lifeboat crews around the UK and Ireland are ready to launch to help those in need. Whether you're stuck on a sinking ship, cut off by a rapidly rising tide, or in the water and close to drowning, RNLI crew members will drop everything to come to your rescue. 95% of RNLI lifeboat crews and station staff are volunteers.
But it’s not just lifeboats. RNLI lifeguards patrol 248 beaches across the UK and Channel Islands, keeping people safe, providing safety advice and rescuing those in trouble. Education volunteers visit schools and swimming clubs to help teach the next generation how to enjoy the water safely. And volunteer fundraisers and shop workers give up their time to generate vital funds. The RNLI is also working to help communities around the world that are most at risk of drowning.

@@rnli Can you join the RNLI With asthma? My brother wants to know since he has it
All of our lifeboat and lifeguard volunteers undergo a medical assessment at application. If he has any condition which would/could cause problems regarding his fitness to navigate/crew a vessel, it's unlikely he will pass the medical test. If his asthma is manageable however, this would be assessed on a case-by-case basis. I'm quite familiar with the beaches by Trevose from Porthcothan to Harlyn, but anytime I go to any new beach in Cornwall I've never been to before, I always have a chat with the lifeguards before I get in the sea. Ask them how the rips are looking, What they think the weather is going to be like etc. Even though I'm quite a competent swimmer and surfer, I have so much respect for the Ocean and I'm how powerful it is. It can catch anyone out.
