I am fresh novice after 22 years darts playing pause ;-), currently I am using pencil grip, 3 fingers with middle finger placed where tip starts. But I realised, that it could be beneficial to use ring finger on tip to stabilise dart. As you said, have to find what suit me best and go ahead to gain consistency. It is too early to say, how my grip will evolve in the future, but definitely will work on it hard ;-). Thx for nice video
I use my ring finger on the tip of the point too Only my pinky finger isn't used But I lock that straight along with my first finger I throw from the front of the dart tho, feels like I can adjust more Players always say hold a dart the same as a pen tho, I write with the tip of a pen also But it's what works for you, and what the situation is
Thank you for your comment! That motivates us :-) Darts is a long journey in search of perfection, but you will never reach it. So: enjoy the path and all its forks!
Too many people think their grip, throw, release or speed etc. is the problem for their darts going everywhere. None of the pro's throw the same which tells you that you the only right way to throw is what comes naturally to you... all the tension, thinking and deliberate actions only make your throw less repeatable and hence your darts go everywhere. Start by repeating a throw over and over until your darts group really well by repeating exactly what you did every time. Once your darts group nicely, then start adjusting your lean angle, where you stand at the oche, maybe experimenting with different darts and weights. Then you learn how to switch targets and master the muscle memory and visualiztion for each target. It takes hours and hours a day and years of practice... not 1 youtube video.
I was just about to comment myself lol - was it just me? He literally couldn’t hold his thrusters closer to the stem - just his dart design tells you this without even seeing the grip lol. Great video but yeah I spotted that instantly that he couldn’t be a better more exact example of a rear grip, Gerwyn Price is the total opposite and doesn’t have any contact in the back half of the barrel - I’m literally caught between the 2 I know they’re total opposite but both feel natural and one will perform one day and then have to revert another day, makes it impossible to settle on dart type! 😭 help lol
After working for countless hours over the course of a year t I became not professional standard, but certainly good enough to win a pub championship. Plenty of 140's if not 180's. I also found after giving up darts for years after that, that I am now no better than if I had never played in my life! Some skills like reading, reading music or riding a bike don't seem to leave you once learned, but playing darts, all I can say is don't stop playing for too long!
It’s amazing how much dedication can elevate your game to that level! 🎯 Winning a pub championship and hitting 140s and 180s is a huge accomplishment. It’s true that skills like riding a bike can stick with you, but darts definitely seems to be one of those sports where consistent practice is key to maintaining your edge. Taking a break can set you back, but the good news is you can always get back into the groove with some practice. Keep at it, and you’ll be back to your top form in no time!
That's with nearly all questions about how to play darts. My answer: Keep it simple, keep it rational, keep it logic. And clarify everything, if it has to do with the brain and the perception and with the factors of physics of the dart, which you can measure, as speed, as trajectory, as stability. But it is impossible, to make a decision or a theory of what is the best way, the optimal way to throw a dart, beginning with the question, how to grip a dart.
Height and angle: if you are shorter, do you extend your hand out (thus opening the angle), or do you lower your arm (thus closing the angle)? I think my old elbow would prefer to open it, lol
That’s awesome to hear! 🎯 We’re glad you found the video helpful and that you learned something new. If you have any more questions or need further tips, feel free to reach out. Thanks for watching and for the positive feedback! 😊
hello! my throws are consistent in a way that they are all leaning slightly to the right upon reaching the board.. can you tell what could be the reason and how it can be improved? thanks
Some things to try. If you are right handed - use slightly less pressure with your thumb. Change your stance. Change the angle of your stance. If you are right handed (right leg will be forward )move your left leg backwards slightly This will make the stance more aggressive. Make sure your wrist and release are giving you a straight throw. If your elbow is not directly above the dart your throw will be consistently off. Check your elbow. Take your time to see if everything is consistent. Also check to see if your eyes are set to follow the dart.
I currently throw a 24g dart with a 65mm shaft and big wing. I personally use three fingers and keep them all horizontally in line with each other, my thumb and pointer right on the seam of the barrel and shaft. Then as I throw, I push my pointer and middle finger up and over to put massive spin on the dart. I'm just a leisure player playing with my coworkers at work, we don't abide by any tournament rules outside of height and distance of the board. But I like comically large darts, so I just bought 48g barrels with a 50mm point, and my 65 mm shafts and big flights will go on those. Also, does anyone know where I can gets shafts longer than 65mm? I think some 90mm shafts would be fun. Throwing little mini arrows.
That sounds like a fun setup! Comically large darts are definitely a unique touch to your game. For shafts longer than 65mm, you might want to check specialty dart retailers or online stores that offer custom or extended dart equipment. They might have or be able to order shafts in the 90mm range for your “mini arrows” experience. Enjoy experimenting with your new gear and happy throwing! 🎯🚀
People who are hating on this video are missing the point. Let's break it down. 1. Lock the wrist 2. There are a lot of different ways to hold the darts so experiment with what works for you. 3. Do be afraid to switch up your style as you get better and more consistent. OP clearly states that there's no one right way and for beginners there's some useful tips to head you in the right direction. If you had to say "BS, there's no right way" then perhaps you just like to hear yourself talk?
I'm a physical therapist and this "lock the wrist" thing puzzles me a bit. If I look at that slomo throw in this video, the wrist starts out in a maximally extended position, but almost immediately during the throw, it starts to move toward flexion. Not "locked" at all imo.
I hold my dart like a pen, it works well for me, I have also tried something else but it doesn't feel right for me. My dart flies towards my board very strangely. is this normal? or is it just that I have to play longer with the other technique
Holding your dart like a pen is a perfectly valid grip and works well for many players! If your darts are flying oddly, there could be a few reasons: Technique Adjustment: It might just take some time to get used to a new grip or technique. The more you practice, the more you'll get accustomed to how the dart should fly. Dart Setup: Ensure that your darts are properly balanced with the right flights and shafts. Sometimes, odd flight patterns can be due to the dart setup rather than the grip itself. Throw Mechanics: The way you throw the dart-your stance, release, and follow-through-can also impact the flight. Try focusing on a smooth, consistent motion to see if it improves the trajectory. Practice Time: Sometimes, it just takes time to adjust to a new grip or technique. Stick with it and give yourself time to adapt. If you’re seeing improvement with your pen grip, it might be best to fine-tune your technique and dart setup rather than switching to something else. Keep practicing, and you’ll likely see those flights become more consistent! 🎯
I'm thinking of giving darts up, I have the ability but I just haven't got the confidence. Its like my nerves kick in when I play in tournaments yet in the leavues I can average 85
Ryan, you have to let it all go, everyone else there is thinking the same thing, the best hack/cheat and how I became an expert putter in golf with the same philosophy, go in with the attitude of I’ve already quit so now I can just throw, but one more crucial element - become detached from reality - there’s no one there except you and the board and you’re so heavily concentrated on just the board and zoning in on the treble 20 that you have no awareness of anyone around you. When I’m putting I’m so lost in the terrain and where the ball might make just a 5mm break that I actually sometimes forget I’m with others because I’m so entranced - and the biggest benefit - there’s literally no one in that world for you to have room or contact with anyone to lose confidence. You have to understand that other people’s opinions or judgements ultimately mean absolutely zero in the context of the universe. Look at Luke Littler - he literally plays like he doesn’t give a shite - why? Because worst case you lose a darts match lol! Just come back another day and play the same way like there’s not a soul in sight and you’re playing yourself
It’s tough when nerves get in the way, especially when you know you have the ability. 🎯 Here are a few tips to help build confidence and manage tournament nerves: Practice Under Pressure: Try simulating tournament conditions in practice. Set up scenarios where you play against someone or in a high-pressure environment to get used to the feeling. Focus on the Process, Not the Outcome: Concentrate on your throwing technique and routine rather than the result of the game. This shift in focus can help reduce anxiety and improve performance. Visualization: Spend some time visualizing yourself playing well in a tournament. Picture the process and how you handle the pressure successfully. Positive Self-Talk: Replace negative thoughts with positive affirmations. Remind yourself of your strengths and past successes to boost your confidence. Take Breaks: If you’re feeling overwhelmed, it’s okay to take a step back. Sometimes a short break or even a change of focus can help reset your mindset. Gradual Exposure: Start by participating in smaller or less competitive tournaments to build your confidence before moving on to larger events. Remember, building confidence takes time, and it’s okay to have ups and downs along the way. Keep working on your mental game and you’ll likely find that confidence grows with experience. You’ve got this! 💪🎯
As a beginner, i find myself hold it like a fountain pen. I pinch it with my pointer finger and thumb, and rest the front on my top of my middle finger.
That’s actually a pretty common grip for beginners, and holding it like a fountain pen can give you great control! 🎯 If it feels natural and you’re getting good consistency, stick with it for now. As you progress, you might experiment with small adjustments to see what gives you the best accuracy and comfort. Just remember, there’s no 'perfect' grip-what matters most is finding what works for you and gives you confidence. Keep practicing, and you’ll refine your technique as you go! 👍
I was born left handed and am left eye dominant but my baby sitter hit me when I used the devil hand...my father caught her smacking me and forcing me to draw right handed and he said it was the only time he truly wanted to beat up a woman. my mother aunts are all left handed and my niece and nephew so it along with a widows peak runs in the family when I was young playing baseball or softball I pitched left handed but wrote right. I decided to play darts and realized it just feels better pitching left but I have had to work to build back up my strength... i like this video though i wonder is it only men who throw darts? it would be nice to see videos that are geared to 5'4" men and women as the average height is that and 5'8" for men. Woman can shoot as well as men (my mother was crack shot in the Air Force) but I think strength and height may necessitate different style for women than men to be successful. 2 fingers works better for me even though one would think the opposite...any women on here just curious how many fingers you use ?
Sorry about that! 😅 We didn’t mean to make the swap image swoop sound so jarring. We’ll take a look and see if we can make adjustments to improve it. Thanks for letting us know, and we appreciate your feedback!
😭 help lol
It sounds like you’re grappling with finding the right dart setup that matches your grip and feels consistent. 😅 It’s normal to find yourself torn between different styles, especially when you see such contrasting examples like Gerwyn Price’s grip compared to others. Here’s a few tips that might help you settle on the right setup: Experiment with Different Setups: Since you’re caught between styles, it might be helpful to experiment with various dart setups (e.g., different weights, shaft lengths, and flight shapes) to see what complements your grip and throw best. Focus on Comfort and Consistency: Choose the setup that feels most natural and gives you the best consistency. Comfort often leads to better performance, so trust what feels right for you. Practice with Different Grips: Since both styles feel natural at times, practice with each one to understand how they affect your game. This will help you decide which grip to use based on the situation. Get Feedback: If possible, work with a coach or experienced player who can give you personalized advice based on your throw and grip. They might offer insights that can help you find your ideal setup. Remember, it’s all about finding what works best for you through experimentation and practice. Keep refining your approach, and you'll find the right balance that works consistently for you. 🎯
If there was truly a BEST grip then every top pro would be using it. Every grip discussed is used by one top pro or another, find the one that works for you. Oh by the way, regardless of your preferred grip, if you don’t put in hours and hours of practice, you won’t magically become a pro.
Absolutely, the ‘best’ grip is really about finding what works best for each individual. Every top pro has their own style and grip that suits their unique approach to the game. The key is to experiment with different grips until we find the one that feels right. And you’re spot on-regardless of the grip, putting in the hours of practice is what truly makes the difference. Keep practicing, and the improvement will follow!
Im not going to watch this video, i just clicked because it kind of frustrated me to see "How to hold a dart correctly". Newsflash, not one person in the entire world holds a dart or throws a dart the same way!! Everyone should experiment with whats comfortable and accurate with their style of throw. Nuff said, goodbye!
That is exactly the information that they provided. They show a few different styles and suggest that you experiment to find what works for you. This video also deals with grip tightness and locking your wrist. It's a pretty good video for beginners.
Yeah, and that's exactly what the video tells us. Maybe spend less time making ridiculous assumptions, being "frustrated" over nothing, and leaving pointless rants.
We understand where you're coming from! Everyone does indeed have their own unique grip and throw style that works best for them. The key is finding what feels comfortable and accurate for you personally. Thanks for sharing your perspective-it's a valuable reminder that darts is all about personal adaptation and finding what suits you best. Best of luck with your game, and we appreciate your feedback! 🎯👋
Love how all these experts are american sounding, probably AI. There is no correct way to hold a dart, its unique to each player. Wish these videos would just stop, there shite!!!!
If there’s a specific topic or aspect of the game you’re looking for, let me know, and I’ll make sure to address it directly. Thanks for the feedback! 🎯
ridiculous title...the correct way.. i hold it like a pencil grip and play great darts. cant throw with 2 fingers.. Every person has to grip the dart it feels natural tho them... its more about stretching your arm. Then again my opinion is: you cant teach someone how to play darts and make them better. Darts is all about natural feeling and talent.
Hey Lilly, it‘s the second time you‘re calling our videos „irrelevant“ or „waste“ without offering any actual feedback. If something‘s not working for you, let us know what it is. We‘re always open to improvement, but vague negativity doesn‘t help anyone. Constructive criticism would go a long way, especially if you‘re invested enough to comment. Thanks.
We always emphasize that it has to feel natural. We would never tell someone how to hold the dart. Our suggestions are mainly intended for beginners so that you can try out different grip techniques.

Same, three fingers and my thumb....anything less feels strange.....I feel more in control with three fingers

With a key.

its all intangibles so just play however it comes natural to you, then practice by drilling targets until you can hit consistently

Pay attention to your stance and elbow position. Also try different release angle
Some things to try. If you are right handed - use slightly less pressure with your thumb.
Change your stance. Change the angle of your stance. If you are right handed (right leg will be forward )move your left leg backwards slightly This will make the stance more aggressive.

It sounds like you’re grappling with finding the right dart setup that matches your grip and feels consistent. 😅 It’s normal to find yourself torn between different styles, especially when you see such contrasting examples like Gerwyn Price’s grip compared to others.
Here’s a few tips that might help you settle on the right setup:
Experiment with Different Setups: Since you’re caught between styles, it might be helpful to experiment with various dart setups (e.g., different weights, shaft lengths, and flight shapes) to see what complements your grip and throw best.
Those banging noises make me crazy, but great video anyways!
cant you just tell us?
Soooo do what works for you and stick to it
If there was truly a BEST grip then every top pro would be using it.
How does gian van veen throw like he does tho 😂
There is no right or wrong way to hold a dart!
Shut up
Yeah, and that's exactly what the video tells us.
Maybe spend less time making ridiculous assumptions, being "frustrated" over nothing, and leaving pointless rants.
Maybe watch the video. Might be a good idea, rather just assuming. Another keyboard warrior looking daft again😅
But isn't that exactly what we tried to make clear in the video? Besides, not every darts fan is from the UK ;-)
Bullshit. Everybody is different, and everybody feel and use what they like and what is the best for them
Just teach something straight forward ...this was nt helpful
If there’s a specific topic or aspect of the game you’re looking for, let me know, and I’ll make sure to address it directly. Thanks for the feedback! 🎯
so 8 minutes just to tell me: hold it however you like... well kinda not so helpfull xD but thx nevertheless
We would love to have a patent recipe for the perfect grip technique, but that's just the way it is. Sorry🤷♂️
ridiculous title...the correct way.. i hold it like a pencil grip and play great darts. cant throw with 2 fingers..
Every person has to grip the dart it feels natural tho them... its more about stretching your arm.
Then again my opinion is: you cant teach someone how to play darts and make them better. Darts is all about natural feeling and talent.
Most pointless video on UA-cam
Irrelevant post
Hey Lilly, it‘s the second time you‘re calling our videos „irrelevant“ or „waste“ without offering any actual feedback. If something‘s not working for you, let us know what it is. We‘re always open to improvement, but vague negativity doesn‘t help anyone. Constructive criticism would go a long way, especially if you‘re invested enough to comment. Thanks.
@@DartsDecoded your telling people how to grip a dart, everyone is different it’s a natural thing.as is the throw
We always emphasize that it has to feel natural. We would never tell someone how to hold the dart. Our suggestions are mainly intended for beginners so that you can try out different grip techniques.
