    Thank you sooooo much fr this. I adapted my throw ad have a similar( not exact) stance, grip and arm action as you. After about 3 days my average climbed from 33-36 to about 60!! (Seriously, 58-60!) I can hit trebles with much better consistency than ever before. Been playing about 7 months and have battled frustration and disappointment. This grip and swing have made me love darts more than I thought possible. I still suck at doubles but I'll take whatever I can get. Baby steps!! Thanks again!!!

      Amazing. First grip instruction that I could relate to. I’m a noob dart player (3 months). I took your instructions for 20 minutes and was awed. I played a practice game of cricket of 1 dart per number. I went around the board until the dreaded bull. Took me 4 throws to get it. Thanks for the vid.

    Nice, now I do understand why the grip of some pros looks so weird on camera, especially Gerwin Price. I started to grip my darts from the side with 3 or 4 fingers because they fall naturally in that position when I do roll them between my fingers. But they would wobble and hit the board all over the place. The pencil grip feels totally weird in the hand when I pick up a dart. But standing in front of the board and actively analyzing my throw I can understand now how it works...👍
    Maybe it feels so weird because pencils have a way larger diameter than tungsten darts. For me it is definitely something I have to get used to.😇

    By far the BEST video about darts there is on youtube! Thank you so much.
    I started playing darts 30 days ago as a bloody beginner and set myself a challenge of playing 90 minutes a day and track some basic game stats as benchmarks. Got pretty desperate after i had minimal to no improvement.
    The good darts got better but i had zero consistency. At least one of the three darts felt completely random. I dont know what my grip was... If you could call it a grip anyway. As everybody told me it has to be my grip since i picked the dart up like this...
    After watching this video and applying your tips i had waaay better grouping of my darts after just 30 min of practice. It feels much more controlled. Makes me happy :)

    Everyone throws differently in darts and all to their own and no harm in trying to copy another top players throw but i feel it wont work ..As said we are all slightly different in ways we hold a dart
    and aim etc .
    My own way is holding the base of the dart with three fingers and i throw a medium length stem
    but hold at the very base of the dart and my darts go straight in board not at an angle and so workd ok for me set up with standard flight although have thrown short stems in past also but past say 20 yrs been medium stem with standard flights and a slim dart last 4.5 yrs and keep very same darts without change nowadays so same darts as 4.5 yrs ago today still .
    My own fav is John Lowe style of throw as liked both his stance and throwing style and ive met John Lowe twice by chance and each time he came to me ..I played Jocky Wilson way back in 1978 approx yr would be in a bar in Fife and Jocky also came across in Wembleys conference centre to where i was at bar and asked where seated and came across for a seat and chat and also practiced with Jocky on the oche alone in a Forfar lounge and he didnt do too badly in his times in the darts .
    My fav two players were Jocky and Eric Bristow as just knowi could have a good bit of banter
    with them guys on the oche as i did with Jocky and i would certainly have had with Eric
    although i never met Eric Bristow ..Leighton Rees another top player and again different style of throw but it worked for him also.. and another guy i seen win a tourney i entered in Scotland Angus Ross another very good player in the 70s and a good guy also from Nairn nearbye Inverness was sat Angus and his father during a tourney Angis Ross won in a hotel there and ye sad when i heard news yrs later of his passing ..Rip to all them top darters not with us today ..
    I feel the taller darter would think be a slight advantage in the game as more in line with throwing
    at them treble 20s with the scoring ..But smaller guys in height get used to throwing up to that treble 20 and it comes easier with practice and momentum once your in that groove ..although i feel do not over practice as u dont wanna leave your best darts on the practice board < A tip ..Last but not least no matter your ability just concentrate on each dart throwing and ENjoy win or lose as hey its only a game and if u lose as we all do , then u shall get the guy back on your better day : )

    Great video. Glad you didn't say "What ever feels.compfoetable". That doesn't help beginners like myself. Though I did figured "Hold it like a pen" thing out. I think it would be clearer if people say "Hodl it like a pen you are passing to someone". If you hold.it like a pen you a writing with its a totally different hold. Your thumb will point forward which makes it difficult to caulk you wrist and aim. Today I start led holding it like a pen I was passing. It was a game changer. I could lock my wrist and even aim easier.

    I'm about a 60 average player but to be honest not really thought about how hard to grip before................just that I have very dry hands and need a grippy dart. Picked myself up a set of Harrows Elite a couple of days ago as they have a bulbous bit I can push against to aid my grip. Took your advice and hold them with a slightly lighter grip and feels better straight away. Won 2 games in a row on webcamdarts with about 62 average in each match. Cheers

    • @DartsClass
      @DartsClass  2 роки тому

      Not necessarily any reason for the weight you use apart from personal preference. If you 'float' the dart in you may want a slightly heavier dart to ensure they go firmly into the board. Most people when they start out tend to be most comfortable somewhere between 23-27 grams 👍

      @DartsClass  3 роки тому

      Hi. There are loads of unconventional darts grips out there. This throw just seems to be typical for the majority of pros.
      Some of the more unconventional grips and throws you may want to look at are:
      Mensur Suljovic
      Simon Whitlock
      Mervyn King.
      Adrian Lewis
      Most of these use parts on conventional technique but spiral the dart to propel it through the air 🎯

    I watched this video earlier this year when I came back to throwing after a 35-year gap, ahahahah. Somehow, I ended up with a grip I knew wasn't right but started throwing well (all things relative, lol). Now I have been trying to get a better grip and when I happened on this video again, I immediately watched it paying much better attention. I'm ready to head to the bar and throw a few! I have a bye this week and want to improve as much as I can this next week, week and a half before I play in the local league again 🤞 Thanks for the pointers!

    If you want to learn to play darts, buy a dartboard and practice at home or better still, join a darts team at a local pub. Don't let these idiots tell you how to hold a dart, how to stand, what type of barrel you need and what weight. Pick a dart that feels comfortable in your hand and throw it at the board. Your style and technique will develop over time. The worst thing you could do is copy how other players hold their darts.

    I have a question. Been playing again after years of not picking up a dart. But if I throw naturally, the dart always ends up around the double 20 area. I can't generate much power and I feel like I always have to hold back when throwing especially in the lower numbers. Wich clearly doesn't help the consistency. Anyone got an idea why this could be?

    Been throwin since '78 and can verify these basics. Almost everyone throws with a little arc. Do not frustrate yourself by trying to throw flat (deadstroking) at first, just control the arc. When Van Gerwin throws a T80, his darts are tailed up.

    Appreciate this video! Just getting back into darts and my grip had changed from 2 fingers on the barrel in my past, to the pencil grip you just showed us. I was torn trying to use my old 2 finger grip clumsily, when now the dart falls naturally into my hand exactly as you demonstrated. So thanks to you I'm no longer undecided on my grip, but will now try to perfect the pencil grip. Thanks again!

      I have been playing darts for many years. I have found that a two finger grip keeps the dark flying straight. I take aim and bring my hand shortly backwards, then gently push the dart towards the board. Make allowances for the dart to slightly drop.

    Throwing with less fingers just eliminates error ratio on each throw...less fingers holding the darts less chance of errors I throw 3 ways myself 2 fingers, 3 fingers on barrel and also 3 fingers but 2 on barrel and 1 finger on point

    What is very good about this vid is the inference that is placed on a certain aspect that nobody ever realises. Neither the instructor or the student. However one of the classic mistakes is emphasized to a large degree, namely the grip. You do not grip the dart.

    Bristow did not throw with his wrist the way you day.. he covered the way he threw the dart .. he was crafty .he did it just like the 4 you mentioned ... look at his throw carefully he also appeared to wrap his fingers around the dart but look when he releases he holds it very loosely with 2 fingers like the others ...

    My natural grip of a dart is to have my two main fingers on the barrel and then to have the ring finger on the point to help with stability in my hand. I understand there isn’t much right or wrong but what do people think of this grip?

    • @DartsClass
      @DartsClass  3 роки тому +1

      Nothing wrong with that. I used to throw like that, the finger on the point makes it more stable when you're aiming it, just remember to pull that finger away on your back swing or it might over complicate your release if you have to get the timing of an extra release finger right! 👍

    I'd like to know about soft tip darts. I've been throwing 95% tungsten with medium spinners and hard plastic flights. I recently tried throwing 16 gr short shaft short tip and saw a remarkable increase in accuracy. I'm 5 11 and weigh 230. It's the first time I've tried throwing 16 gr shorter days, 5 inches tip to end of flight. Ideas? Suggestions?

    Greetings from Oregon!
    I’ve enjoyed your videos. You have great tips. I’m pretty much new to darts, a darts Newb, if you will. Since I’ve started after lockdowns and isolation began I’ve only played alone. I’m trying to track my progress by keeping track of statistics such as averages.
    How do you calculate in a horrible game that you can’t seem to double out? Against an opponent, the game would be over before too long even if I can’t buy a double. Would you put a limit on throws? What limit would you suggest to me as a beginner, 40 darts? 45? 50? None? An unending nightmare of a game can destroy my average. I’m reluctant to buy a computer program where I can play against a machine. (At least until I can see if I have any potential.) I’m averaging about 50 points a throw after a month of trying out different grips and darts. After “the new normal,” I have a hope of starting a darts club in my town, but a few terrible games out of a dozen discourage me from feeling like I’ve had any progress. Thanks for any advice you can offer me. Keep the videos coming. They’re great.

      Hi Bruce. Good to hear you've got into darts.
      At the start of your darts journey I would avoid thinking too much about your average at all, as like you say, a bad leg or two can destroy your average, and with that your confidence and derail Amy progress you're making.
      My advice would be to pick a number of darts that you think is about your rough average to finish a leg. So let's say 42. That's 14 visits to the oche to checkout 501. If you do it in less than 42 you win the leg, if you still haven't in 42 you lose the leg. Play a race to 6 legs against yourself that way. Once you start winning more than you lose, move your target to be one turn harder, so checkout in 39 or lose the leg. Before you know it you'll be hitting 30 dart legs easy.
      Don't let awful legs at double discourage you from joining a local league. The sooner you play competitively, no matter what your standard is, the sooner you'll improve. I've been playing for years but still have the odd game where for some reason I just can't hit the double!
