Complaining about audio quality? You’re in an empty room, of course there will be reverb. Some people just want to find fault with everything. Admire your dedication to doing it right and not fast.
Great work, guys! And I'm not troubled by the sound at all. I know what it's like to stand in a completely unfurnished Victorian room -- so to me, the sound in your videos makes things even more authentic. Nowadays, people are spoiled by HGTV, but you two are doing the *real* work! Keep going, I can't wait to see how the room turns out.
Funny that people are so bothered by a bit of echoing! On that front, though, I do notice a difference with the flannel sheets. 😊 That woodwork is coming along quickly in that room. You’re both working so hard and it’s definitely showing! You make such a good team with Mike working on the macros of the process and Jeanie following up with the micro, detailed work. This is going to be such a beautiful room!
A vlog is a vlog, is a vlog and UA-cam is not a professional platform. What y’all are doing is amazing and I’ve enjoyed everyone that I’ve “participated” “watched” listened to, so y’all continue to do what you do, do well so we can enjoy it allllll with you ✌️🥰👍
That is a lot of work. That room will look wonderful when you have painstakingly taken all that paint off all the wood. We have ordered our custom trim in Douglas Fir, replicating the original in the rest of the house. The stain is extremely dark and my husband wants us to match that colour, but watching what you needed to do to try and match the original colour tells me that we have a bigger job on our hands than we ever imagined. Thank you for the lessons.
That sounds like an interesting project! A piece of scrap wood is a great way to experiment with finishing techniques, but once you have it figured out, then you can just go have fun!
Seeing all the paint that you have removed thus far, you have my admiration. I wouldn't have the patience to do it hour after hour. It looks so beautiful when it's done!
It just amazes me what people can find to complain about--I didn't even notice the echo--I was concentrating on the content. Sometimes people just need to shift their focus from the minor to the major. The sheets do help. Really enjoyed the trip to the antique shop.
All the hard surfaces makes sounds bounce off , any materials like curtains, rugs, fabric furniture will absorb sounds. The flannel sheets would definitely work to absorb some of the sounds👍
The room is really coming along and becoming a warm, cozy haven. Especially compared to when you first moved in. All the dirt and dust are gone. That alone does wonders. I don't want to sound like "that guy," but I feel like seeing the door darken over time and enjoying seeing the process would be a gift. The next few generations will look at it and see the natural aging as charming just like with the current doors that darkened naturally over the years.
People complain entirely too much, what a bunch of panty wastes. (Probably not the correct spelling). Please don’t let the complainers ruin your day. The rest of us normal people appreciate your hard work and your willingness to share your adventures with us. It’s a lot of work, show some gratitude folks. Thank you. Lots of love from West Virginia. ❤
You guys sounded good no problem hearing you 😉 I must say that you are more ambitious than me I don't have the patience or the skill of to deal with everything the way you guys are so meticulously and doing it to preserve it for now and future generations I probably would just be the one to throw a coat of paint on it but it's so nice to see the natural beauty coming out keep up the great work I love this channel looking forward to seeing you the outside flower bed finish you touches but that takes time hell yeah and get a dog LOL God bless you.😁
Your Habitat has so much more of everything than mine. On a less envious note, at my Habitat, I found a $15 stainless steel sink to replace my worn out 65 year old porcelain one. I also found a doorless hanging cupboard that became the base for a small kitchen island. Fruitful day.
You’re doing an awesome job. I’m just glad that you’re sharing the journey even if not to the “standards”by which others choose to judge you against. Keep up the good work and hopefully the naysayers don’t get you down.
I will always love your videos! That's a big Habitat for Humanity store wow! Our isn't half that size! I love going to them because you find so many things from the past. 😊
That was a lovely roadtrip! I'm hoping your "new" toaster, is in working condition, especially if it automatically lowers the bread. We had a Toastmaster that did so, back in the early 60's. Thanks for all the detailed info on Shellac vs. Stain. Both of you do a wonderful job on getting that paint off, and out of that wood. Congrats on the100th episode! Mike is soo right about Flannel being soft, and cuddly, it's also the perfect echo hugger. 😊💖💖
Congratulations on Episode 100! House is looking great! I used to haunt the local ReStore in Seattle (Ballard neighborhood, near Ole Bardahl's old place); gleaned some nice hardwood flooring and a 1909 medicine cabinet from there, for my various projects. Glad to see you weathered Ian okay...also I like the new intro, w/ the period music!
We used to live just north of Ballard (near the Space Needle). We were between houses at the time so never had a reason to visit the Restore, unfortunately.
Have you checked with Black Dog Salvage? I think they are located in Roanoke, Virginia. You should check them out. They do vintage, historical, etc.. everything, even appliances & stuff. They might have your Vent hood or be able to direct you to someone who does.
Weird my lengthy comment from yesterday is gone. I went to watch this lovely video again this morning while eating my breakfast and saw my comment gone.
I've looked on EBay for range hoods, vintage. Many vintage and new vintage styles are pricey, $300 plus, but a few are less and one seller has a NuTone (Braun now) motor that might be a cheap solution: Range Hood Vent Fan Blade Motor Assembly Kitchen Exhaust Kenwood NuTone Broan is the title and Andreyz89 is the seller.
I have never really noticed any bouncing of sounds etc., I guess I am concentrating so much on what you two are saying that it doesn't bother me at all.
Just looking at all the work that is going to have to done on that ceiling makes my neck and shoulders hurt. That door is going to be beautiful. Our local ReStore is at times, more expensive than if you went to an antique store. I've found going to the local Goodwill (of which we have 3) and "junk" stores pays off better since they haven't restored the stuff yet.
Happy 100th episode! I think the fabric did help. Good enough. Your Habitat for Humanity ReStore has a good selection. Van Dyke's Restorer's catalogue has a lot of similar trim pieces, iron brackets, etc. I bought some iron 'door straps', a 'speakeasy grille', and pyramid topped 'clave' nails to spruce up my plank-style front door. This house didn't come with those, but my last house had them. Re: shellac. I'm wondering if so many coats will give the wood a thick, or perhaps very shiny look. Maybe making the shade darker to start would work? Also, if there is any sun in that room, the shellac will get darker, so you might want to go a shade or two lighter than what you really want. Our floor refinishers warned of that, and the areas under our rugs are definitely lighter. Your rationale about not staining the wood makes sense. I always smile when Mike's engineering science mode takes over. :)
If I was looking for a professionally filmed video I would be watching HBO or something, not UA-cam. That was a fun fieldtrip! I love seeing reclaimed building supplies that can be sourced.
I'm a collector of old toasters and I have a one slice that looks very similar to the one you got. I'm so happy you're giving that one a good home. No idea why I love old toasters, but I do!
The door is looking good. I think you are getting too dark, tho, as it will continue to darken over time. Just an FYI from past mistakes....don't stir products or lay your cans etc on top of whatever you are working on...drips, imprint of lid etc, will happen, accidentally. What a fun shop to explore, bet you find alot of cool stuff for the house.
I'm in love with the wood color; so beautiful. My family had that toaster; loved it. Restore was a terrific find; loved looking at corbels. Jeanie you worked so hard on the door; it is beautiful. Great work! All I can say if your knees must ache on that floor. Audio is great, no problem.
Moving right along you two! The door is beautiful and looking forward to the end result with shellac. I'm looking forward to seeing the wallpaper you choose for the walls and eventual furnishings. Sorry if I am looking too far ahead LOL.
Great job on the woodwork, It's really looking nice. I admire your hard work. The breadboard ceilings are going to be beautiful as well. Enjoyed. How is the new job coming along?
I have never found your audio to be a problem. But it is to your credit to try to assuage some of your viewers. To my eye, but it could be how it is showing on camera, the tinted shellack looks a bit too dark. But I am sure you will get matched in the end. Good luck searching for a range hood vent!
I enjoyed the trip to Restore. I wasn't too crazy about the 6 coats of shellac on the sample wood. I thought it looked too muddy and covered the grain too much. I think the first coat looked like a better match, on screen it did anyway.
The wood is coming back to it's original glory and is so beautiful I love it. You two are doing a awesome job bringing the home that was already beautiful back to it's original grand beauty. I love learning new things that you teach us. And that store you went to id be a kid in a candy store there lol. Thank you for your hard work. P. S. Hopefully you do story time for holloween again this year I enjoyed it.
I know you're aware of Kaleb and 2nd Empire Strikes Back -- rather than dye his shellac, he orders shellac flakes in different colors -- they have some that are quite dark already!
No audio problems at all. Seems like you survived Ian. We lost power for 40 hours and internet for 60 in my part of NC. That is a huge ReStore. Good luck on the hood search. The wood is going to be fabulous when all is done. Are you wallpapering the room?
Rochelle, we hope that you had no other property damage. 40 hours without power would seem like an eternity! Yes we hope to paper the room. Stay tuned!
Im always so happy to see you every time. If some noise bothers me I just turn it down a little. It never bothers me enough to stop watching you guys. My memory is not great but have you said if your putting air conditioning in ? Congratulations 100🎉🥰
I was wondering if using a brush would have been easier then you explained that will be the method to stain/shellac the wood. Have you thought to darken the shellac some more so you won't need 6 layers ? Loved Jeanie's smile as it shows how proud she is for a job well done. 😊
I'm sorry 🤭but if people complain 😬that your videos "are not professional enough," then why 🤔don't they watch "professional" videos? I watch your videos for the "content" 🤗you produce every week. You have never claimed to be paid professionals🤑 and I enjoy the journey. As long as I can hear 😉what you"re saying and understand the meaning and terminology of what you are sharing, then that is all that matters to me. ☺Anyway, I love 🥰learning from you both. I love seeing how careful and precise you are with everything. I do have a question 🤨for the electrical engineer in Mike. I went to bake two potatoes in my oven today and set it for 🥵400 F. It took over an hour to barely get the oven warm. It felt like it was only 125F 🥶or less than that. What could it be? The thermostat or the element? It never rang the bell 😑because it never reached the temperature I set it at and obviously the potatoes were still hard. Help? 😶🌫Keep sharing regardless of "reverberation" or echos in your videos. Maybe you could sing 😇in your videos like in a cathedral 😇choir and that may make those who can't 🙄stand the echos feel a lot better. 😳Yes? I also enjoyed the little field trip too. I'd love to see a video of that place in a bit more detail of what they have to offer. I didn't know places like that existed. Yes, I'm naive in this matter because I've never restored anything but my own health.😂🤣🤪🙃🙂😁
April, I'm glad to hear that you've restored your health. That's the most important thing that you own. For the oven, you could start by putting an oven thermometer in there and turn it on. Set it to 350 degrees and check it 10 minutes later to see if the thermometer agrees. It's not unusual for an oven to be a few degrees off but if there's a big difference then you have something wrong. Heating elements fail, but they usually quit completely. Same with thermostats. You didn't say what the age of the oven is or your house but electrical wiring in the house could be faulty as well. Let's try the thermometer and see what happens.
I never noticed anything with your audio. One would expect echoing in an empty room. Did you find a fan for the stove or are you going to continue looking for an old one. Have a great week.
I don't believe range hoods are truly necessary for a vast majority of home cooks. Would you consider a freestanding kitchen since that would be in keeping with the style of your home?
Oh ...I live in the south and let me tell you having an actual vent that vents the heat outside while cooking is a godsend. Otherwise it heats up your home . During hot summer months this is a must.
@@number1pappy That's probably why homes of this era used to have summer kitchens. Personally, I'd sure like to see the 1834 Restoration House kitchen set up in the old ways, but it's not my house!
As shellac darkens with age, how dark will your tinted shellac turn in a few years. I'm wondering if it will almost be black. As far as the young ladies comment being deleted, it only takes one complaint to UA-cam to have it removed. There are a lot of mean people out there as you probably know that will go after others they disagree with. So much for free speech.
The shellac will darken over time so we're trying to leave it a little on the light side. I have a bookshelf that I shellacked 20 years ago. It was nearly clear when new but today it has a light honey color after 20 years.
Complaining about audio quality? You’re in an empty room, of course there will be reverb. Some people just want to find fault with everything. Admire your dedication to doing it right and not fast.
Correct. There is always an echo until there is furniture or things in the room. I have always found that to be true.
ADDING A PIECE OF FURNITURE WILL ABSORB SOUND. LIKE THE IDEA OF SHEETS--NEVER THOUGHT OF THAT! JEANNIE, YOU LOOK SO BEAUTIFUL WITH LONG HAIR.
Thank you! :-)
Great work, guys! And I'm not troubled by the sound at all. It washes right off with alcohol so I wasn't too worried.

I’ve found that if you can’t remove bits of old paint off a wooden surface, just touch over it with a matching paint color to the wood.
That could work well for seams and deep pinholes.

HI, what Restore was that? I did not hear the location in your video, but I have not seen one that large before, but want to go.
Greenwood South Carolina.
on camera it is way to dark
Sometimes we start filming with full sunlight and then it gets cloudy without us realizing it.
