My wife and I appreciate the information you are sharing re Northeast Tennessee and southwest Virginia. We are looking at this area strongly as a place to live one day. The information you provide is useful to us. In fact we’re going to spend more vacation time in the areas. We love the mountains and the outdoors.

Thanks for explaining the VA taxes. I'm trying to convince my wife to move to Abington. We live in TN. We also go to church in Abingdon. I also work in North Carolina. Call me the Tri-state traveler. 😆

This was very eye opening. I got excited about VA, but when I saw that the COL was high and the taxes were high. It pushed me away from looking more into va. But your video explaining the taxes and how it’s not as bad as other states I felt a relief.

Thank you for talking about politics; that's very important!
I've been looking at land and farmland (Grass for livestock) in West Virginia but I think I can also look in southwest Virginia and still be near like-minded people and have a bit easier access to supplies, groceries, healthcare, etc. I like West Virginia but there are some quite secluded areas there. I want "secluded" but I also want supplies.
Also, thank you for doing these videos.

    ABINGDON IS BEAUTIFUL!
I moved here in February of 2022 with the plan to start a you pick. I had a job at a community mental health center but the program closed 4 months after moving here. While here, I lived in a RV on the land I bought. After the job ended I had to do travel jobs to make a living. I did that for a year and returned in September, I have been trying to start a business but there aren’t any spaces to rent. I’ have since found out I’m in the meth making part of the area just learning the neighbor next to me is involved. So the idea of having people come to my land with their family seems unsafe.
I have found the people to be very friendly but not welcoming . Seems very clique. I agree with the decent healthcare but mental healthcare consists of pill mills.
Abingdon has all the amenities a tourist would want with the theater, hiking, bike trails, dining, and shops. However I think if you were to ask a local, they might tell you something different. I think if you are looking to retire and have a lot of money, then Abingdon would be a great place to be because there’s a clutch of expatriates living here.
The winter is rough with the cold setting into these hollows, the cloudy , overcast days, lack of social supports: it’s quite depressing.
Of the 3 decent places to get coffee 2 are closed on Sundays. Damascus nearby basically closes for the winter once the bikers on the Creeper Trail stop coming because it’s too cold for them to ride . But the good thing about the late fall and winter it it’s easier to fish in the streams because all the out of town folk aren’t around.
Pros: beauty, theater, restaurants and coffee shops ( when they are open), physical healthcare, outdoor recreation, cultural activities.
Cons : poor mental health care, cost and supply of affordable housing (housing prices are high and scarce), meth, trash and junk on the sides of the road, decent jobs don’t seem to exist.
Summary: Abingdon is a tourist town but might not be a place you could easily move to unless you have a lot of money and are intending to retire here.

Anyone have any suggestions for small towns (between 5,000 and 30,000 people) in VA? I'm currently living in the liberal state of Maine (cause my fiance's parents live here), but i've convinced her to move south. We're in our mid 30s, Christian, conservative, love to hike, and like to support small farms and Amish stores. We are looking to buy a home in the next year. Looking for somewhere with homes under $220,000, low crime, and easy access to hiking trails. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Abingdon is beauitful however we were shocked at how many taxes you have to pay you have state and county. ( ALSO on your car every year) or any personal property. In 2008 for renting a 2 bedroom was roughly 400 to 500. Here in 2023 that same apartment complex is 900 to 1100 a month. Abingdon is mostly old money , doctors and laywers. As someone who has lived in abingdon this is just facts. Also abingdon is not small it has 3 exits off of intetstate 81.

Abingdon's population is less than 9,000. That is definitely a small town.

Home sellers in Abington seem to think they can get Washington, DC prices for their places. I think the town is cute but that’s delusional.

    How accessible is medical care?
    And the usual living conveniences?

There's a 100+ bed hospital in Abingdon, part of the Ballad Health network. I don't have any experience with that facility so I can't tell you much more than that. As far as typical conveniences, you'd find most of what you ever need. There's a Walmart (of course), Lowes, several grocery stores, etc.

Would you mind listing 3 things you prefer about VA? I hadn't considered it until a couple of months ago. A friend of mine showed me some pictures of land for sale and said, "This is what you need. You don't wanna go out to a range all the time. Tennessee is nice, but you'll get more land for your money in Virginia." Now I'm interested.
