  • This awesome Singer 631G / 611G has an option to sew a chainstitch which is very handy for basting and temporary seams.
Most sewing machines create a seam with a lock-stitch which is ideal for strong permanent seams but if you want to sew a temporary seam then chainstitch is a great option.
If, for instance, you are making clothing for fast growing children, you could sew up a hem with the chainstitch. When the child grows, you can then unravel the chainstitch to lower the hem and sew a new hem. Darts can also be added and removed at a later stage. The conversion from lock-stitch and chainstitch and vice-versa is very quick and easy.
Only two parts need be changed and a slight adjustment to the top threading.

Thank you so much for demonstrating the chain stitching on this my favourite vintage Singer! It’s such a handsome elegant looking machine and all its components and accessories look so solid and beautifully made. It’s the sum total of the sound, feel and look of these machines that I find so delicious! It’s a treat to see sections of the manual and hear the way they expressed things so carefully, teaching you

I fully agree with his comment, as I consider the SINGER machines of the 50s / 60s / 70s, the 300, 400, 500, 600 and 700 series, the best and most beautiful sewing machines ever produced in the world.

My mother had 2 631 G’s. She wore out the motor on the first one because she did embroidery and monogramming free hand. I have her 2nd machine and I replaced the motor with one from my old 640 Golden Touch and sew. The grey face plate I had to remodel slightly. Now I have the solid state motor and with that I never have to reach for the handwheel to start the machine. I guess my mother must have used 50,000 miles or more of thread.
She had the most beautiful handwriting and she would do the letters on paper and my dad made templets of the letters. She had a number of different sizes and made an excellent living doing monogramming and doing embroidery. She did have both the small monogramming attachment and the large monogramming attachment which Singer made. She would use them from time to time but she was so good and so fast with the freehand she really didn’t need the attachments.
One thing Singer did and most don’t know, many of the parts from say the 401A thru the 600 series could be enter changed.
Other than routine cleaning, oil and grease for the gears was all the service her machines ever needed. Her very first machine was a 401A that she used to make drapes with. You do a great job demonstrating and explaining the use of the machine. They just don’t make them like this anymore. With the all steel inside and gear drive no other machine on the market has ever matched these machines. I have an older cabinet which has my 750 Golden Touch & Sew. The 631 G gives me the free arm so I just close of the 750 and set my 631 G on top to use.
I would like to know what you think of the Touch & Sew machines?

    Thank you for the video.
It.s nice to see a demonstration of the chain stitch on the Singer machine, mine has a similar bobbin adapter, the one thing I can think of that still uses the chain stitch is those large bags of animal feed that have a pull string to loosen the thread and open the bag.

Kia ora from Upper Hutt 👋. I was given a 411G which is also slant shank with chainstitch capability but unfortunately mine did not still have its chainstitch needle plate 😅. I’m keeping an eye out though - thank you for the video so I can see how it works.

Thank you so much, the video helped me fix the machine, but I get in trouble when I start knitting.
Stitches don't make up on the cloth, and I tried a lot, but I failed.
Another thing, the pedal heats up and the machine starts working on its own.
I ask you to help me find a solution.
Knowing that I haven't found anyone to fix this kind of g611 singer machine.

You're unpicking the seam improperly... the little red dot thingee side goes underneath the stitches. It won't rip the material if you do it that way. That's the way it's meant to be used. Just an FYI. :)

I am really having a hard time how to lock the stitch. What part of the machine you press to move it backward for locking stitches? I do have the similar sewing machine which is Singer 631 G but that's the only problem that I cannot start sewing. Please reply. Thank you.

Use the stitch length lever, put it in the upper position to reverse the feeding. Thanks.

Tested today a Singer 632g =germanbuild fully metal model from 1954 to see if it could handle 2 needels, not a twinneedle. Here is the result: ua-cam.com/video/7za0yVDg-Ps/v-deo.html
