It's amazing that a guy in New Zealand can help a guy in Norway with servicing an old sewing machine. My wife bought a nice sewing desk with this model machine at the Salvation Army store. It just barely could move! After following every step of this video it really sings! Thank you very much!

Thank you a thousand times for this video!! I inherited a singer machine just like this one that was in need of a service. Without this video I would never have figured it out. Also you have a very cute cat. All the best from Sweden

I own the SINGER 650 Golden Panoramic from the year 1967, which is two years younger but still identical to the 611/631, except that unlike the 611/631, the 650 has a golden rather than gray control bezel. In addition, the 650 already has the cam group incorporated into the machine made of nylon, while the 611/631 model still has them made of steel. But both models have all components and gears completely made of steel and this is wonderful as they are very sturdy, eternal and aesthetically beautiful machines. The 650 and 611 can either be used on the table and carried around with the suitcase, or be mounted on the cabinet to operate either by pedal or electrically, while the 631 and 670 having the free arm cannot be operated with the pedal manually. In addition, the SINGER series before the 700, such as the 301,401,411 / 431,611 / 631,650 / 670, had the milled jaws that were sharper and made more grip in the fabrics than the following models, guaranteeing excellent fabric transport like industrial machines. ...

Very helpful thanks so much! I bought a 611G for $20 as it didn’t work, but it turns out the plug was incorrectly wired, and it seems fine. So I thought I’d give it a clean, grease and oil before seeing if it can actually sew a seam. This was great!

Hello Ann again in Melbourne, you must be a mind reader because the 631 is my ultimate Singer, they are quite rare and this has given me a chance to see one up close and functioning.Even more exciting for me as a French teacher is to discover it’s partially made in France…c’est magnifique ! I am a big fan of the slant shank, the needle/bobbin area is so much more accessible and visible. I don’t know why it’s not on all machines. The old Singer 9027 I use here is so ergonomic for many reasons but mainly for the slant shank and ultra simple threading. Thank you again from Ann

Great video showing this Singer, this one seems very well made inside. I have some luck repairing broken top hinges on the swing needle area door with epoxy paste to make the missing part to hold the pin, I see the pin is still there, followed by using super glue to hold it tightly together, stronger than the epoxy bond on the very small mating surface, if done right it works as it should.

I found a Singer 680U (Japanese) at a U.S. thrift store. The minimal info on these machines in the States has led me to ask if the Singer 680U was ever sold in New Zealand/Austailia?
The 680U is like a Singer 600, but utilizes a #66 bobbin, and has direct drive motor. However, it uses a cog belt, from the main horizontal shaft, downwards to the feed and shuttle mechanisms. Changing the belt required pulling the main shaft forward.
If the 680U wasnt so rare in my country, I wouldnt of bothered to rehab it.
Legend has it that many US Servicemens' wives bought them during the 1960's Vietnam war, and brought back home.

From the golden age of Singer, when they were making high-quality machines in factories all over the world, before they started cutting corners in order to compete with cheaper Japanese machines.

Hello, Great video! Thank you for your well delivered directions.
I followed the video point to point (although I was able to skip the foot repair). My machine sounds much better but somehow the positioning of the needle is incorrect. The three (3) position is supposed to be in the center by it is towards the right. Please help!

    Very informative; thanks.
Do you have a video covering the motor?....I've been unsuccessful trying to remove a 'similar' motor from a German-made Class 401G I was servicing and wondered if there's something I can learn from your 631G activities? The motor casing seems to be 'stuck-to' the housing inside the body of the machine...I found the motor case to be all-'plastic' unlike the machines made in the USA; this renders 'giving it a firm tap to help it on its way' impossible (without the likelihood of a catastrophe). Furthermore, the casing is 'fluted' making it difficult to apply a substance that might dissolve any old, 'varnished' oil effectively (perhaps Singer anticipated the issue and sought to reduce the surface area of the motor casing that might 'stick-to' the housing within the body of the machine?). Any ideas, please?

Generally just the gears need the grease and oil for the rest. Thanks.

I have this exact machine, but I wonder if the motor or brushed might be bad. Is has so little torque, (can pinch it with 2 fingers and it stalls). any way to find out? or potential upgrade to a motor with more torque?

We pulled out the motor to clean it, it’s a little sluggish, any ideas on how to remove the screws that hold the motor housing together? There’s no obvious way to unscrew them
Update: looks like it needs a u shaped spanner screwdriver, just ordered a set will try that on the nuts, the heads aren’t accessible. Update 2. No luck not deep enough…

@@InStitches Thanx. Another question wich I`m not able to find an answer to... In the manual for the 631G it states : Runs on AC (210/220V) and DC.... What? Do you know anything about that statement. I can`t find anything on the machine itself that indicates any DC voltage.
