Main hope for Alienware: start making non-proprietary parts, trust me, it’ll be a great start to a new era of Alienware. Start treating this like MSI or Corsair, make parts that can be sold separately.
@@jamesmcd71 no, other manufacturers allow motherboards that can go in multiple cases, power supply’s that can be upgraded or replaced, things like that. Dell doesn’t allow that at all, they don’t let you upgrade things on purpose, such as making the front IO a part of the motherboard, it’s purposely different from every other motherboard to make it so you have to buy only from them.
Great build. PC Part Picker was $400 more expensive than their $1949 build. Always grew up with Dell and wanted an Alienware. Coming soon to my doorstep!
I've always admired the Alienware brand for their unique product designs. From their laptops and desktops, to their monitors, they tend to feature a lot of curves, a variety of textures, and cleverly placed lighting that truly make their products look like they're of extraterrestrial origin. Its still a really cool looking case, but i agree with the others that it is a more conventional design taking on standard rectangle dimensions and a smoked glass window. I dream that some day Alienware might become a board partner with Nvidia or AMD, and design their own GPUs. 😍
Thanks Eddy! Great Review. The new Case is definantly interesting. I am happy to see that the team is approaching more of a traditional boxy modern look for the case. I am not too sold on it but hopefully it goes in the right direction. Think I will stick with my RTX 4090 Aurora R15 for a while. @@JohnnySinns-h2q Dell Alienware 35 inch curved. Found it on Amazon "refurbishe" for a third of the cost. I got lucky, not a scratch on it. It so crisp and at 175mhz gameplay is smooooooooth.
The cheap and inefficient case, mobo, ram, cooling are the biggest problems. The case is better, but still not anywhere near where it should be. Still not nearly enough airflow. Just use a mesh front and 3 fans... simple stuff, it's 2023 not 2011. Why is the mobo still a dumb custom design and dimension. Cheap looking mobo and ram. Not enough fans to get proper airflow, and a 280mm rad should be the minimum for modern flagship cpus. They're just thermal throttling themselves it's kinda funny.
@@pathtoball4677 And yet, despite it all, the systems DO work and are reliable often times with benchmarks beating the class average. Laptops thermal throttle depending on model, the desktops if liquid cooled I assure you absolutely do not throttle on CPU or GPU. I know for a fact they do not. There is trade off on prebuilts, you settle for less theoretical quality but at the same time you cannot begin to ensure the components picked off the shelf and put together don’t have subtle incompatibilities. Dell and others have test runs which stress test all the components in tandem over thousands of load conditions to ensure stability. The custom motherboard is part of that btw. Instability is just higher in home builds on average. I have used both since about 1991, I know intimately this is true, there is a legit argument for prebuilt, even Dells Alienware line.
@@pathtoball4677from what I understand the system doesn't have temperature issues it predecessors does though? And I would assume the choice to sacrifice some efficiency for looks makes sense from a brand prospective. Otherwise what would be the point in buying a brand?
Sweet. Took the exact same old proprietary steel chassis and wrapped it in less plastic. At least y'all poked more holes in it so I guess that will help some. Maybe. I miss the old Alienware of the '90s...
I think it looks great and IMO a much healthier aesthetic for the brand, ditching most of the edginess without losing the trademark alienware futurist looks. But like most viewers here, I just want to see proprietary parts left behind. Bravo on taking a step forward though.
I'm buying one this Dec. My favorite thing about the Aurora is, it doesn't have a name like the Aurora XJN204BZYN-WXY (2)! I really hate it when companies do that.
as an owner of the r15 i HATE the front panel and trying to clean it. its a real pain... other than that its a nice design and i like this new design as well but i share the same dislike of the MB and the PSU being proprietary.
So easy to configure what you want and the best warranty of any. I've had a technician drive 300 km. to my house to change parts and all within a week of diagnosing the issue on the phone. I'd like to see Corsair or any other brand do that.
If you spent 3 hours of your time building a PC you would of gotten a much better preforming PC for cheaper and could of fixed the issue yourself because there are no proprietary parts
@@bfdia51 ....you're right if you're into building them. I'm into using them and only have a passing interest in how they are put together. If I messed up it could be weeks or months getting things running again. I'll pay a little extra to get things fixed by people who know how.
I purchased a new R10 Ryzen last year but would love to get my hands on an R14 case to get that nice see-through side panel. Did managed to cure airflow issues in the R10 though by running Noctua Cromax NF12 x 25 fans with two running intake and 2 more on a push/pull on the radiator. Temps are high 60 / low 70s (on a hot day) with that config.
@@fractalelf7760 Ask a case how much airflow it has. Consider only the ones that answer with "Yes" A less silly but equally valid answer: easy to clean mesh filter. Nothing between the inside and outside besides the fan and the filter. 1I-1O or 2I-1O config, plus any AIO fans at minimum.
it's a lot better than before but could still use improvements, 2 fans as intake on the front, give us a mesh front. Gamers love RGB need some RGB RAM, and some on the AIO. Also LCD screens is the new thing, Like the Corsair and NZXT or ASUS, need a LCD AIO. Or at least some RGB on the CPU cap for AIO and RGB fans. Is the AIO removable? Or even just the fans. Also a seperate headphone and mic jack on the front would be nice. But this is a step in the right direction, with room for improvement.
This still uses a proprietary motherboard and power supply connectors. Essentially e-waste (just like previous versions), but without the cheap plastic shell.
If it lasts for what, 10-20 years maybe. Wouldn't you already be getting a different build then? I understand wanting to have full customization, but if it last a while you would probably just get another one.
I ordered the R16 (13 gen I7, 4070) why is it coming with only a 500 watt psu? Will it be able to handle an external drive for example? 500watts seems really low to me.
While this is unequivocally a step in the right direction, I think I'm gonna be better off going the DIY route until Alienware makes something that truly deserves the "Alienware Tax" they tack on every config
I'm so glad I got the R15, it looks so much better than the R16. Also, the R15 provides a 1350-watt power supply, so I personally am way happier off with this older build instead.
Kind dig the new design, but come on.. No one likes proprietary parts, ditch the cheapo proprietary motherboard.. 12 phase VRM is nothing spectacular and its kind of funny that he was kind of implying that 4 pin PWM fan headers are some kind of "new and exciting tech exclusive to this computer!!!" also it could use another 2 or so USB type A on the rear and definitely a type c on the front.
It’s literally the exact same chassis. CHANGE THE CHASSIS. How can a company with Dell’s resources not create a more modern up to date internal chassis. At least the R15 looked unique. This is just an XPS with a different logo on it.
I own an R16, it runs great! Very good thermals! I like the minimalistic design! Great job Alienware! 👏 I would recommend if you are looking for a quality pre built gaming pc from a reputable mfg.
It seems like they are actually listening now but i actually preferred the previous design. This took the Alien out of Alienware. There should be a way to incorporate the previous design while adding more cooling functionality and interior space. Make the outer smaller and the inner bigger to not increase the size, don't tilt it sideways this time. Cmon guys get it together I am trying to support here...
that case is just crying out for some more front ventilation. it would be really cool to move to an all mesh front panel to allow for better intake + positive pressure. those VRMs and the SSD will need more cool air, especially with the AIO not providing any airflow for them (like air cooling would). i'm still rocking an alienware aurora r7 with an AIO & taking off the plastic housing + adding two noctua nf-p12 intake fans improves so much. also what is with the proprietary long motherboard design? it kills any upgradability or case swap down the line. proprietary parts just end up as e-waste down the line
I like the new case design, it's clean and modern looking. I can't stand crazy designs for cases, it doesn't need to look like a spaceship. Going to pull the trigger on a system later today.
It's actually a thermoformed multilayered resin! We chose this material as the side panel is not a fully flat surface, and wanted the clear door to follow the subtle curve of the chassis.
Imo, this is a step in the right direction. Alienware has always been an interesting brand to watch as they develop new technologies from model to model. However, I decided to go the route of choosing my own parts... Saved a lot of money by choosing a 12th Gen and a 30 series... Most importantly non-proprietary components allowing a future upgrade path to 13th, 14th Gen as well as 40 and 50 series upgrades if/when needed. If you guys removed proprietary parts, you could/would have a larger slice of the parts-picker market allowing others to buy Alienware components like Msi, Corsair, Gigabyte and many others that help add choices to our Rigs etc. Cheers - Jass.
This looks like an improvement! Glad to see Alienware/Dell moving in the right direction. Hope you continue listening to GamersNexus critical reviews. I have an R13 and have been very happy with it, even with the poor case design. Glad to see R16 improves on this.
Except they’re not listening. It’s the same metal frame chassis. They’re still using a proprietary motherboard and PSU. They did the bare minimum. They just stripped all the plastic off the same metal frame they have been using so they could save money. You can tell they’re not confident in the design because they don’t even let you select top-end parts for either the CPU or GPU on the website. It’s a bare minimum attempt.
I can go to a computer shop, buy my gaming PC parts, pay the vendor $100 to put it all together for 20% to 30% less than Alienware. It baffles my mind why people still buy this krap.
I guess the computer shops in your neighbourhood are a lot cheaper than they are in mine. I did exactly what you suggested, and while Dell was admittedly having a sale on their entry-level R16, it was cheaper than anything my local olde computer shoppe could put together with comparable performance. Admittedly, I did prefer the local option for its all generic, standardized components. But it was definitely more expensive.
Great info on this new awesome-looking Alienware Aurora R16. Can the RAM be upgraded with RGB RAM sticks? Would the motherboard support this? If not, what type of RAM can be used?
Please go back to your roots when Alienware was first started in Miami. You guys use to have raw power and allow customers to customize so much but it’s not like that anymore. Origin Pc who is based in Miami now do what you guys use to do. I understand the original owners of Alienware are gone but you have to have true gamers designing these systems. You all have proprietary parts, even your power supply’s are proprietary. We can’t even change your motherboards anymore. Also, change the laptops back how they use to be with the cpu and ram at the bottom so we can repaste without taking everything apart. Please consider this for us all. You guys took over a brand we loved and changed so much and lost the true roots.
Thank you so much for saying this. I feel the same way. I bought Alienware years ago and you could change so many parts. You could change the motherboard with third party boards like Asus, Gigabyte, Biostar, etc. I too wish they would make it how it use to be.
This right here....this is why people don't buy Alienware, again it's still cheaper to just build your own rig, no proprietary parts, and it looks better too, there are so so many different case designs that'll make your head spin....
You guys still don't listen to customers let alone your fanbase. You put your incompetent and ignorant board members and CEO ahead of them. All the flash can't replace function and this system still has problems which are notorious with Alienware. So glad I went with Skytech for my gaming PC needs no issues and I can upgrade and update anything I want without issues like Alienware. No thank you glad I did my research.
I'd love for them to bring back the gigantic Area 51 R2-R7 series. The massive chassis was very upgrade friendly 😊 I hope I'm not alone in this. Actually- I'd be happy to even buy a new in box R7. Ayo I'm sure y'all got one or two in a warehouse somewhere 😉
Are we going to be able to change the motherboard on these new models??? I absolutely love these cases but just can't buy one without being able to put my own mobo in there, I need that upgradeability and the chance to get the support assist stuff that bricked my last Alienware away from the system.
And this is why you shouldn’t buy Alienware until they can sort this out. Other boards simply cannot fit in this case because the case is not ATX. Nor is the power supply.
This new case is still most likely a hotbox. Not to mention that it’s still proprietary, and the CPU cooler is still probably load-bearing and is screwed into said case. This case is at most a half-step towards the right direction.
“Another boring gaming desktop from Alienware. I think you guys need to know what design is. This is not a piece of art or design; it looks like a 90s desktop. One of your best desktops is the Alienware Aurora R4. That’s design. This is why a brand like Alienware needs to start listening to their consumers and understand what they want, rather than what you want. You guys are losing the game.”
This was a very interesting explanatory video. I am aware that the CPU cooling was not perfect in R15. Is the CPU cooling in R16 using the same parts as in R15? I am waiting for R16 to be released in Japan as soon as possible.
The issue with the R15 isn't the cooling, its with the power. The only review with a useful benchmark uses a 13900KF, so I will use the same CPU but the trend holds for the 13700K/KF in the R15. And I can't see it somehow being different for the 13600K either. 13900KF should be running P cores at 5.2GHz and E cores at 4.3GHz. And that is allowed to go higher with better cooling. The R15 runs the 13900KF at 4.4GHz for the P cores and 3.4GHz for the E cores. Technically the thermals/240mm cooler is fine but the CPU is running 15-20% under what it should be. For a normal 13900K a 240mm cooler is just on the edge of being fine, if you live in a cold area and keep your room chilly you should be fine. If it gets warm (21C+) probably not and a 280/260mm cooler will be better. Plus the CPU can run faster with better cooling.
Time for some questions I'm sure your not going to want to answer, but might be of use for anyone considering one of these systems. For system upgrade you mention tool less upgrades for the GPU, RAM and storage. RAM never needed a tool. Tool less drive bays have been around for at least 8 years. And the GPU should have at least one screw, but that can be one that can be removed by hand. What about the CPU? If you get a 12th gen now, are you going to be able to upgrade that to a 13th gen later? They both use the LGA 1700 socket and are both compatible with the Z690 and Z790 chipset. Asking because the R10 had both 3000 and 5000 options. The systems that shipped with a 3000 CPU used the B450 chipset but did not get the BIOS update needed to run the 5000 chips. And Intel changes sockets on even generations, so 14th gen will be a new socket. What about the PSU? You didn't mention its proprietary. Any reason for this omission? Are you going to be selling compatible PSUs? With the PSU, efficiency has nothing to do with the quality of the power. It means that if the system is using 1000W (going for round numbers), and you have a 92% efficient PSU (about what an 80+ Platinum PSU will get), the PSU will only be pulling an extra 8% (or 80W in this case) from the wall. With regards to the "special features". Never herd of the 'Flex power' If your getting a power surge, shouldn't that be handled by a surge protector? And that is going to cut power. There is OVP (Over Voltage Protection), but that only addresses the 'system' side of the PSU, not the ‘wall’ side. Burst power. First, power doesn't work like that. The PSU doesn't 'push' power, components pull power. What you have described is boost or turbo on the CPU or GPU. If the CPU/GPU is under load and has thermal headroom (aka its cool enough/isn't going to overheat), it will start pulling more power so it can push its clock speed up. And on the topic of CPU power, will the CPU be able to hold its boost clocks/power? The R13 and Intel R15s where massively under preforming due to power limits. Has that been addressed?
We'll do our best to answer some of these. - CPU Upgrades: Yes, since they leverage the same socket, you should be able to upgrade from a 12th Gen Intel CPU to a 13th Gen. - CPU Power: Overclocking will not be available on the Aurora R16, however the - FlexPower technology allows power supply and motherboard to communicate protecting you from system shutdowns in the event of a power surge due to performance needs. - BurstPower technology allows our power supply to double its power during a performance surge to assist performance needs. - Proprietary Components: The motherboard and power supply were designed to work their best in tandem with each other.
@@AlienwareChannel Nice to see a response of sorts. Should be able to is not will be able to. The R10s use the AM4 socket, that socket was comparable with both the 3000 and 5000 CPUs, amongst others. The only thing needed for compatibility moving from a 3000 to 5000 series CPU was a BIOS update. To my knowledge, that update has not been published by Dell. Fair point on overclocking, if your only shipping the R16 with non K sku CPUs they don't support overclocking and that is an Intel thing. Still too much marketing fluff around the PSU features. Is it an external power surge or high draw from a CPU/GPU boost? Surge implies an external event... Yes there is a hold up time, but its not new. Yes the 3080/3090/4080/4090 GPUs can pull a LOT of power in very, very short bursts. That pull is enough to trip smaller PSUs, simple fix is more/bigger caps. But that is all dealing with at most 1/60th of a second. Its too easy to technobabble around people. Sell the technical features, not the marketing. But as I have no way of verifying and being well aware of Dunning Kruger, I shall leave that testing to an independent team with the proper testing equipment to verify. While the PSU features got temporary pass, proprietary components don't. Its a yes or no question: either they are or are not proprietary. If they are, will replacements/spares be sold out of warranty?
The new look is nice, though I'm a fan of the R15 design more personally. Any chance we will ever get products like the X51 and Alpha again? I had both machines and I absolutely loved the small form factor and power those things packed.

Just received my R16 yesterday, still sitting in the box in my livingroom! Doing some reconfiguration and cleanup of my office before bringing it in to setup and test. Can't wait, this is my first higher end PC that I've owned, in the past I usually got something middle of the road.
I don't know why people don't seem to like the case I think its the coolest looking pc I've ever seen! very tempted to buy one. going for the i9 and 4070 ti combo ;)
Honestly thought the same about the case
i9 13 4070ti and i7 13 4070ti is not difference. You will get almost the same performance and fps.
@@darkslaerdark yeah appreciate it bro I've decided to build my own pc with AMD now aha
I wanna go for i7 and 4060 and i am very looking forward to it
Probably because the R15 finally got it right, and now it looks like… Alienware fit into a generic box
The PC of 30 years in the future looks like an NZXT case from 5 years ago. Its better than the R15 (or my R10) but it looks like an average case now and you still won't be able to swap parts out easily like the MB and power supply.
Every other component is easily upgradable down the line as long as it is compatible with the chipset.

@@DjFusion86 I am sure you know the answer to that one. Dell wants you married to their eco system and buying new PCs every few years ... not upgrading them.

@@AlienwareChannelWow the case, power supply, motherboard, and CPU cooler sure are upgradeable!
Main hope for Alienware: start making non-proprietary parts, trust me, it’ll be a great start to a new era of Alienware. Start treating this like MSI or Corsair, make parts that can be sold separately.
its called alienware for a reason, and to be honest I like that their parts fit in with the branding.
And exactly what is proprietary in an Alienware system?
@@jamesmcd71 For Dell it's mainly the motherboard and psu
@yourforeignlocal yah, kinda like all motherboards? This was a real issue back in the 2000s, but it's no different than any other manufacturer.
Finally, you all changed the case 🥳
They haven't really, just another reskin
Great build. PC Part Picker was $400 more expensive than their $1949 build. Always grew up with Dell and wanted an Alienware. Coming soon to my doorstep!
Same bro I can’t wait
I've always admired the Alienware brand for their unique product designs. From their laptops and desktops, to their monitors, they tend to feature a lot of curves, a variety of textures, and cleverly placed lighting that truly make their products look like they're of extraterrestrial origin. Its still a really cool looking case, but i agree with the others that it is a more conventional design taking on standard rectangle dimensions and a smoked glass window.
I dream that some day Alienware might become a board partner with Nvidia or AMD, and design their own GPUs. 😍
Partner with NVidia? We see how well that went for EVGA, now don't we?
Alienware GPUs would be sick. Alienware isn't perfect, but I agree that they're great at making stuff look cool!
Going to buy one for christmas 🔥🔥
The new design is so clean!
It's better but still really bad compared to other PC cases
Thanks Eddy! Great Review. The new Case is definantly interesting. I am happy to see that the team is approaching more of a traditional boxy modern look for the case. I am not too sold on it but hopefully it goes in the right direction. Think I will stick with my RTX 4090 Aurora R15 for a while. I personally like the look better and the performance has been no less than fantastic! Cant wait to see whats in store for the future! Cheers!
We appreciate the candid thoughts and feedback ❤️

Dude, it's an Alienware. You want boxy and boring, buy an Inspiron. Alienware is supposed to be stylish and out there.
The R16 looks sick. I loved the look of the R15 too, but this will hopefully be a huge upgrade thermally. I really like that it's a lot smaller.

Nice one, thanks Alienware.. I'm considering to change my R12 to this one.
It's crazy how they improved so much but they're still 7 years behind in design.
So what are the design issues then in your mind?
@@fractalelf7760 The fact that Alienware and other OEMs are allergic to the ATX standard makes them all bad designs

So easy to configure what you want and the best warranty of any. I've had a technician drive 300 km. to my house to change parts and all within a week of diagnosing the issue on the phone. I'd like to see Corsair or any other brand do that.

R16 The NEXT step in E-waste from a once renown brand
It seems like they are actually listening now but i actually preferred the previous design. This took the Alien out of Alienware. There should be a way to incorporate the previous design while adding more cooling functionality and interior space. Make the outer smaller and the inner bigger to not increase the size, don't tilt it sideways this time. Cmon guys get it together I am trying to support here...
Did you just change the exterior of the case and kept the same interior of the R15?!?! lol
that case is just crying out for some more front ventilation. it would be really cool to move to an all mesh front panel to allow for better intake + positive pressure. those VRMs and the SSD will need more cool air, especially with the AIO not providing any airflow for them (like air cooling would).
i'm still rocking an alienware aurora r7 with an AIO & taking off the plastic housing + adding two noctua nf-p12 intake fans improves so much.
also what is with the proprietary long motherboard design? it kills any upgradability or case swap down the line. proprietary parts just end up as e-waste down the line
White introduction? Lunar light?
I like the new case design, it's clean and modern looking. I can't stand crazy designs for cases, it doesn't need to look like a spaceship. Going to pull the trigger on a system later today.
Not even 12 months of r15 and we already got another version
On the new Alienware Aurora R16 is the side panel window made from tempered glass or acrylic?
It's actually a thermoformed multilayered resin! We chose this material as the side panel is not a fully flat surface, and wanted the clear door to follow the subtle curve of the chassis.
@@AlienwareChannel Thankyou for the reply, I love the look of the new Aurora R16, thankyou for the video!
I’d like that you refresh the laptop in a sleeker way too ! Or create a new line of desktops with the same designs cue as this.

It’s a bare minimum attempt.

does the Propriety Parts allow for Thermal-Grizzly CPU Contact Frame and Noctua NF-S12B redux-1200 PWM fans.
There is
OVP (Over Voltage Protection), but that only addresses the 'system' side of the PSU, not the ‘wall’ side.
- CPU Power: Overclocking will not be available on the Aurora R16, however the
- FlexPower technology allows power supply and motherboard to communicate protecting you from system shutdowns in the event of a power surge due to performance needs.
Alienware (dell) still 10 years behind.
