When using an external display on the dock, you can make the external display your primary monitor, and your laptop display your secondary monitor, as long as you use extended display instead of mirrored the laptop screen should now be independant of the external display and use the RX680m to drive it. Edit, To elaborate, if you make the external monitor driven by the eGPU the primary windows monitor, then all applications should launch on that monitor, a normal desktop window will be able to switch between graphics cards just by dragging it to the laptop display, or a display plugged into the laptop's video out port. But a video game generally cannot switch to a different GPU without shutting douwn and re-launching, this is why you want the more powerful GPU to be the one driving your primary display
Just FYI: Docking eGPU, the half bandwidth happens because both data (raw/instructions and the results which is rendered image) back and forth in the same cable at same time (bidirectional), limited to Thunderbolt bandwidth as ETA mentioned in video. When using external display, the result (rendered image) sent directly to eGPU's I/O via HDMI/DP cable not back to Thunderbolt cable.

If I were building this setup for myself, I would go with the 3070. That one seems to be the sweet spot between price and performance, at least as of last year it was. This space changes fast.
If going egpu the two best options are either the 3060ti or 3080. The difference between the 3060ti and 3070 is too small to justify the price gap. See the KitGuru "eGPU Scaling Benchmark" video.

I was saying that since that the 3060 is more cheaper in price its more attainable with price compared to the 3080ti. @@st4r444 It does, all Zen 3+ support USB 4 standard (which includes thunderbolt 3 features) if the devices are USB 4 certified they had to support all the features for windows 11 support (the only good think Microsoft did with windows in years). So most manufacturers should support it, though, most devices already in the market need bios update to activate (it's disable for some reason), the Ayn Loki devices will support it (as they said).
@@davidfgranger not sure about the amd 1 but their intel 1 is. Even if both are egpu compatible, gpd took the initiative to enable it on both chips while other companies with portable pc amd may not do that for their bios and board
The most impressive thing to me isn’t that more and better handhelds are coming out, but that the prices are lower than they were just a year ago for products that are infinitely better.
Intel would probably have a minor advantage (10% added gpu utilization) as it has thunderbolt 4 compared to AMDs USB4(which is equivalent to thunderbolt 3 spec)

3:45 Once again, why are you mentioning Vsync in an adaptive sync situation? Vsync inherently reduces GPU performance and adds latency increasing the likelihood of going under 60fps.
Are these devices actually comfortable to hold for extended periods? I've been seeing these over the years but they haven't particularly struck me as comfortable to grip.
This will be available in my country next month and I'm really intrigued by this. I was into eGPU's when they burst onto the scene about 6 years ago, but the problem is having CPU-intensive games that just ran too hot for the laptop, the chasis just expanded like a bag of chips in a passenger jet. Maybe tuning down the performance helps a bit, but it helps to have a device that does it all especially when I don't plan on installing 8TB worth of games.

I suggest that you test egpu in all new handhelds. AMD make it egpu support optional, so there are a few expecting egpu test to reserve one. Only this GPD confirm egpu official support in the 2 models.
The AMD version is what most of the potential customers will head for. So what everyone is waiting for is a test for eGPU support regarding the AMD version with USB 4 (instead of the nobrainer Thunderbolt 4).
Please compare the intel and amd versions on heat and sound pressure levels of the cooling system. Maybe make it a three way between these two and the Lenovo 13s. I'd love to see how the large single fan cooler compares to the split dual fan cooler. Their all in the same price and performance space.

Im actually surprised how low fps he get on Forza Horizon 5 with 12th gen CPU and Desktop 3060 ! Does this have something to do with data bottleneck while using thunderbolt 3? My Legion 5 with 3060 and Ryzen 5600H gets more fps with same settings, way above 100 fps to be exact

I would like to see M.2 eGPU being used through the extra 2230 M.2 slot that WinMax 2 has. Too bad they didn't build this to have the 2230 outward facing.

I just checked and the cheapest dock I could find online here in europe is 300 euros. At that price you'd be better off buying a laptop with a discrete GPU in it. Maybe they are cheaper in the US - 300 euros seems like crazy money for something that does nothing without another 1500 hundred of hardware added to it.
You are right as far as the prices for eGPU cases are hight and stable. I use (and recommend) the sonnet breakway 750. But I disagree regarding the sense of an eGPU. I am away from a full desktop-pc for my game-table, one for my Racing-rig and a third one for my main working space. CPU Power is less important and with actual devices there ist alway enough power. So even a surface provides enough cpu-power. So what could be cooler and more practical than using your handy, small and light working device for everything else what makes fun in the spare-time?

What was the overhead do you think? Like, how much does the 3060 lose in performance percentage wise? It seems like he 3060 is really stretching it's legs but I'm no expert in that regard. Also, if there's any overhead does increasing TDP to max thermal limits on the CPU mitigate it at all?

I guess the fps will be about the same or 5-10% lower. Because USB 4 works with TB3 Bandwith, if im not mistaken. So the Bandwith would be lower

You don't even need the egpu for most esports games. Those tend to run very well on integrated graphics

Just a note, the 2 TB version comes with 2 SSDs, not one with 2 TB. I ordered the 32 GB AMD with 1 TB.

What was the overhead do you think? Like, how much does the 3060 lose in performance percentage wise? It seems like he 3060 is really stretching it's legs but I'm no expert in that regard. Also, if there's any overhead does increasing TDP to max thermal limits on the CPU mitigate it at all?
