    📌What tools or spare parts do you carry with you on your tours (short or long!)??

    • @drewlucero3916
      @drewlucero3916 5 років тому +1

      The normal tools, than I added spokes, derailleur hanger, master link, sometimes a spare tire .🤘

      @marijabelch 5 років тому +1

      I just spent a month cycling in Germany and I only had a multitool, levers for changing tires and the pump. Didn't need any of them luckily :)

      Drew Lucero We have never brought a spare tire. I know others do. They are just so bulky! We use a money bill to patch the tire if it’s small enough. Seems to work!

      marijabelch ya I feel like in Europe and most places unless you are in the deep backcountry, You don’t really need the whole shop!

    The bit you rode around is the toughest part of the Waikato River trail. With a buggered derailleur you made the right decision. It is tough even with a loaded bike packing rig.

    • @radbikeadventure
      @radbikeadventure  4 роки тому

      Yes, we were aware of that and factored into the decision making. Listened to my gut...saying..."don't ride it!! save it for another time!" (i'm pretty stubborn so my gut had to really convince me haha) The road was really pretty too with hardly anyone on it, so no loss there!

    Hats off to you for braving those rough tracks and trails with loaded touring bikes. The suspension bridge, in reality, was probably one of the safer stretches you did although it looked perilous. A great and enjoyable video.

    • @radbikeadventure
      @radbikeadventure  5 років тому

      Mike Skor agreed! Ya it just feels a little scary bc it swings when you are on there! The slippery stairs were probably more dangerous or the moss stones hahaha ya next time more mtn bike setup and it would be tons more enjoyable!

    That was a fun route. Well done on making in good time even with the damaged deraillier. I carry a spare hanger - never had to use it but if the need arises, I have it.

    • @radbikeadventure
      @radbikeadventure  5 років тому

      Jimmy Johnstone we have learned our lesson! Next time we will bring a spare. And now we are ultra conscious about where our bikes lean and keeping the derailleur side safe.

    You guys are amazing and very inspiring! I've done some of those trails in NZ, but to do everything as a long ride is still a dream... :)

    Great video as always. Earlier we had a discussion about carrying a small crescent wrench. Straightening a bent derailleur hanger is a perfect application for it. You guys are as tough as nails. My wife loves the inspiration.

    • @radbikeadventure
      @radbikeadventure  5 років тому

      Pedaling Pete thanks so much! Ya we just used the derailleur to bend the hanger. Still had to replace it. But at least got a gear out of it. Not sure how Ryan managed but she’s a beast with climbing!

    Wow 😯😱 that was a challenging trail with all the steps, steep inclines, declines, etc! And that bridge though 😳. Yes, always listen to your inner voice - finishing on the road was probably for the best. As much as I’m loving all the thrills of your adventures, safety is always first! I really like how you start the videos off with snapshots of different scenes. I don’t know all the technical terms for how you put the videos together, but they really flow together artistically, and are very entertaining 🤩👏🏾👏🏾.

      Shelley Shell yay 😁 glad you noticed! Yes lots of time is take to think about the timing with music and the flow of the video. The trail was a great challenge but we will be back for sure with a better setup!

    I've had problems with my drive-train also; gears wearing out, chain rusting, stretching quickly, and my rear derailleur getting bent. I'm going to give up and get a Rohloff Geared Hub and a carbon belt on my next bike. I really think internal geared hubs are the future of touring, the drive-train is like the weakest part of bikes and needs to be updated. I haven't had any problems with any other part of my bike other than the occasional flats.

    • @radbikeadventure
      @radbikeadventure  5 років тому

      bucket traveler ya we agree it would be nice to invest in that! They are heavy but the low maintenance is such an allure and the indestructible nature of the rohloff is the very appealing! Ya just with shipping the bikes or even just having them tip over can cause the rear derailleur to bend! Yikes I would support your decision for the rohloff!

      I'm starting a 196 mile canal see if I can hack it . I'd prefer to wild camp along the way. Honestly I'm worried about going on my own haha its my first time

    • @radbikeadventure
      @radbikeadventure  5 років тому +2

      Ben Cook Sounds like a great plan. Wild camping is awesome but yeah, totally scary at first. That’s normal! As one of my friends said, you just have to do it and suddenly what was once intimidating becomes routine. Just make sure you’re in a place that you CAN wild camp without disturbance.
      We will definitely make a wild camping tips vid in the future!

    The section of trail before the dam is now closed forever :( There was a big issue with some hunters going down there and killing animals. They are going to make a new trail eventually. It was closed most of 2020 as well so this might be some of the last documentation of it!

    You guys were lucky. They have closed that first stage of the river trail now.(unfortunately). Someone interfering with a farmers sheep.led to complaints and closure. Afew people have ruined a great asset of the area... Real shame..
