    What Color is Your Shadow?
    Welcome Back to Another BobBlast!
    Blast from the Past… again! This BobBlast painting demo is how I observe the effects of glass and practicing what I see. Whether you paint realistically or as an impressionist painter, observe and study the object you are about to paint.
    A quick technique, with your phone, take some close-up photos of a glass of water - take many photos of different angles and observe them in black/white mode. Practice painting these glasses of water in black and white; then do the same in color.
    Most glass has a thicker bottom, reminiscent of a glass hockey puck with light beams bouncing out all around… and particularly at one bright spot that shines into the shadow. I refer to that as “the hot spot.”
    Now, look at the shadow color. The yellow liquid reflects on a blue table top. Our inclination is to make the shadow yellow - but instead, your shadow color in this case is green. Yellow and blue make green, right?
    But wait, you say! Shadows in a snow scene are blue or violet - how come? The shadow is generally the complementary color of the light source. The orange sun makes a blue shadow. Isn’t painting fun???
    Don’t paint for absolute accuracy. Paint for the colors of reflection in the shadow and all over the glass. Watch me do this in the demo. Photograph different liquid colors in a variety of glassware shapes. Paint many warm-ups, as suggested above. Soon, thru observation and practice, painting the illusion of glass becomes automatic. Robert Motherwell called this “automatism” and his paintings are in museums. Be like Motherwell!
    I have a Studio Chart to remind you about painting the Illusion of Glass. It hangs in my studio for reference.

    So much fun to watch you paint. This reminds me of when I was at Art Center in Pasadena back in mid 80's, pre-computers and we learned to draw glass objects with all the highlights and shadows and always the star on one point of the edge, for the hot spot. We learned to illustrate products for our comps, including glass ware. They had to look as real as we could make them. This takes me back to those illustration and advertising classes.
    Thank you. Again, absolutely love to watch you teach. Wish I had the money to take your classes. Watching you makes me want to draw and paint again. Be safe and well.💖🙏💖

    Bob, your joy is my motivation! Question: Is it ok to paint a canvas while it is lying flat or must it be on an easel? Someone said that a painting not done on an easel will never be painted at the correct angle. Is this true? Thank you!

    When use gesso, depending on effect desired, do you ever add paint color to white gesso for pastel like ground?

    • @RobertBurridge
      @RobertBurridge Рік тому

      Thanks Judith - I get this question a lot during workshops. I have added acrylic paint to my white acrylic gesso and it seems that I am using A LOT of my paint to get the desired color. That is why I will either gesso THEN add a wiping of acrylic color OR use Holbein's Color Gesso. Appreciate your question!

    I absolutely love your work and teaching. I am fairly new to acrylics and having so much fun. What I always wonder is how you can squeeze out your colors at the beginning and have them stay wet? Mine dry up so quickly and I pretty much have to put out each color as I use it. I do live in a dry climate so I know that can be an issue. What's your secret for keeping your paint piles moist? Thanks.

    • @RobertBurridge
      @RobertBurridge 2 роки тому

      Hi Joan, Thanks for your question. What I do: I put out small dollops of paint, enough to last a short period of time (like 1/2 hour) before I refresh those piles again. I add no modifiers, slow drying or "open" acrylics. I paint fast, so that is also helpful.
