    Hello and thank you for your generosity! 'Mature' private chef here, and ex-pet dog training instructor. I presently live in France and have harboured the fantasy of nomad truffling for years. May just take the leap next year and get a dog to train. You are giving me hope that I can at least turn it into a semi-retirement self-paying hobby - if not more! After spending many years working on and off in the truffling Vaucluse, I do worry about the dark side of it, but perhaps it also piques my sense of adventure. Thanks again!

    Always impressed with your videos and the knowledge you share. Our Lagotto Romagnolo Sally has recently had a wonderful litter of 10 lovely Lagotto pups and I’m hoping some of them will be fantastic truffle hunters… we’re based in North Nottinghamshire (Sherwood Forest)
    They are almost 6 weeks old and are absolutely stunning. It’s going to be so hard to say goodbye to them when go to their forever homes.

      Ten! That's fantastic but I imagine your house is chaos right now!! You might already be doing this but in case you are not,, have you thought about doing some pre-training with the pups? This will give them a real head start if they are going off in the world to be hunters, it will also give you some idea of which pups are the most enthusiastic about the truffle smell. The ones that go crazy over the truffle balls are invariably the ones that become manic, unstoppable truffle hunting dogs. The others will make fabulous pets!

    I do think that the biggest threat for a career in truffle hunting is climate change, not economic crisis.

    • @TheRealTruffleHunters
      @TheRealTruffleHunters  2 роки тому +1

      I agree with you totally. The summer droughts and extreme temperatures in southern Europe are playing havoc with the wild truffle supply. The truffle ecosystem is very fragile and as such will be one of the first casualties of climate change. Truffles aren't affected by economic recessions - it is usually the wealthy who buy them and the wealthy tend to make even more money during times of economic crisis. They can afford to eat more truffles which is good for hunters - if they can find any truffles!!😫

      Some interesting points. I know that there only two registered commercial species of truffle growing in the UK which certainly makes it difficult to devote yourself to hunting full-time. Here, we could hunt pretty much all year round. Having said, that the tuber aestivum/uncinatum is abundant in the UK and really high quality - I think those in the industry are (understandably) reticent about revealing the true picture. What is certain is that there aren't that many hunters compared to other countries where there is a longer uninterrupted tradition of truffling. Prices are much higher in the UK too. Looking at soil maps etc there are definitely places in the UK that I would love to explore besides the well-known spots along the south coast. I wouldn't be surprised if you start hearing about tuber brumale finds within the next few years. The main issue seems to be whether you are legally permitted to hunt in the various woods and forests around the country, this lack of access would certainly be a problem unless you are old school chums with a gang of land-owners. Hopefully someone with more knowledge can join the discussion!

      @@TheRealTruffleHunters I’m in Kent. Some spots here that have the right soil and conditions but I’m starting in sept. Trained my puppy up this year and he’s now 1 year old. Where in the uk would you like to look? Id love to do this abroad but I’ve started it a bit late now as both children are immersed into school life here in uk. Truffling is a wonderful hobby but it will take me years and years to establish truffle sites and I’ll be retired by then 😂.

      @@djcrista I would go up north as I think it is pretty much virgin territory. As for establishing your own sites, you might be over-estimating the time - once you know how to recognise a truffle place you start seeing them all around you - the first ones are the hardest!

    Hii, I have a question, I live in Spain, currently is the first season that I am going with my dog to find black truffles and I've found.
    I've heard that in summer there are the summer truffles and I want to know for example If the summer truffles grow in the same places as the black truffles,
    would it be possible to find a summer truffle in the same tree where I found a black truffle in the previous winter???
    Thank you!!

    If you do think you have found a truffle is there a way to have it verified?

    • @TheRealTruffleHunters
      @TheRealTruffleHunters  2 роки тому +1

      First off you can ask a hunter like me - if the truffle is one of the common ones they can usually be identified with a photo of the exterior and a croos-section clearly showing the flesh. If a hunter does not recognise it, then it won't be one of the commercial truffles. In that case you csn contact the Biology Department at your nearest university or check online for Mycological societies in your country. More informally,.there is a subreddit where various truffle people attempt to answer queries www.reddit.com/r/Truffles/

Im retired now and living in Rural Flintshire N Wales at about 600ft above sea level i have many acres of woodland that we can wander in does N wales have a reputation for producing Truffles ??

      Yes there are black truffles to be found in some parts of Wales. I believe youwill be looking for beech forests with a pH of 7.5 or more, calcium rich soil, preferably patches that get a good deal of sunlight. I find springers great dogs to truffle with -I like their range, how old is your dog?
