Hola Ovi me alegra verte bien . Gracias por mostrar tu huerto. Esta hermoso y bien cuidado. Tienes buenas manos para la agricultura. Dios los bendiga siempre.🥊🧤
Your garden is beautiful. I planted for the first time ajíes y están hermosas mis plantas en el balcón en tiestos de tela y están casi 2 pies de alto y llenas de ajíes. Vivo en Chicago y el próximo año voy a sembrar culantro🇵🇷
They’re beautiful plants Ovi. You sure have a green thumb.. I never put tomatoes in my sofrito reason being that tomatoes are acid and your sofrito may not last for too long. If you’re going to use right away I’ll be okay. Muchas bendiciones para ti y tu esposa.❤️🇵🇷
The garden is amazing looks so healthy and abundant. I also grow kale and my first year growing collard. The leaves are gigantic but they have some small holes. I harvested my tomatoes but this week has been extremely hot(99-103 heat index) and the leaves are brown. You win some and loose some. Thanks for the tour love it.
My kale has the small holes and I cut them back completely today and fed to the chickens. The new leaves will now start growing. May take a few weeks but we are OK with it. Our temps here get nowhere near 90 and all this week will be in the 70's.
Good morning. I have a PCS move to upstate NY. I thought it was not possible to grow plants there because of the weather, but you showed me a lot. I would like to meet you when I get there. Good job.
Looking great Ovi! Great gardening tips. :) Culantro is the only way to go!! Makes my mouth water! My gardening this year has been a lot more preparation than planting. Fruit trees will be going in soon!
Preparation always takes a long time but you will be rewarded handsomely in the future. Great feeling. My wife used the culantro today for a sofrito used in an arroz con pollo. Amazing.
Hello friend, the Culantro looks great. Do you keep them shaded? It looks like they don't have cover but I heard that direct sun will hurt them. How do you grow yours?
I don’t shade mine and they grow just fine here in upstate NY. However, keep in mind that the sun is not very strong up here as it is in the tropics or the lower states. If you live in a warmer place where the sun is stronger you can always plant in buckets and move to the shade or partial shade.
Your gandules ,are they the colorful ones? I have the green ones that have an average of 6 to 7 seeds in each pod . My neighbor had the plant. His plant was about 4 years old and about 8 to 9 ft tall.
Don't know the color, but these are the midget plants that produce an early harvest. I got them from the website "Desde Mi Huerto" in PR. Desde mi Huerto is located in Isabela, Puerto Rico. Their website is: www.desdemihuerto.com/
garden looks beautiful!! I have better luck with yellow marigolds if I get them from seed packets. they are bigger and bushy. I made agua fresca with cucumber limon and mint (mojito mint)
No, I don't sell seeds. I get these seeds from a place called Desde Mi Huerto and here is their website: www.desdemihuerto.com/. The culantro seeds take a very long time to germinate and grow. This year I planted my seeds indoors the first week of March and will be planting outdoors in mid-May.
Thanks for being such a loyal follower over the years. I appreciate it. I’ve had one major problem over the past month or so. I will create a video soon and explain. Hopefully in the next few days.
How the heck are you growing such beautiful plants please tell us what kind of soil you use. How do you get them to stay that healthy looking? I’ve tried growing this for three years. I’ve not been successful yet.
There may be a few reasons. In a couple of my other videos you can see what I used in my raised beds. I used wood, wood chips, compost and peat moss. But the compost is the most important and I buy that locally and it is delivered in a truck. Also keep in mind that it doesn't really get too hot up here and the temperatures in the mountains stay mostly in the 80's all summer long. And it rains a lot up here.
For recao you have to start growing them indoors in February or early March and then plant outdoors now in May. I live in Saratoga County NY and will be planting some outdoors by the 15th. You can see how I did it last year in this video here: ua-cam.com/video/4LzOBRSsSug/v-deo.htmlsi=SE-94L7B7F6HXw8L
YOU ARE IN A NORTHERN CLIMATE!!!!I want to grow a sofrito garden in the north (Cleveland) just not sure how just yet..... culantro is temperamental even in the ideal conditions. Sometimes when they have their perfect conditions they are prolific but its hard to get it right when recreating it. When the winter jits do you do anything special to your sofrito garden? any plants that dont comeback naturally ? I would love to grow the criolla de cocina peppers .... where did you find the seeds?
I've done a few videos about it last March and April and will continue doing them in the near future. Culantro is very hard to grow, so I start my seeds indoors in early March and plant them outside in late May or early June. I have a short growing season up here. When the winter hits us here in upstate NY everything dies and I have to replant from seeds or small plants from a local nursery. The only thing that stays alive (root wise) is the Kale and Swiss Chard. They grow again in April without replanting. This video here has the planting instructions and in the description you will see where I get my seeds. ua-cam.com/video/4LzOBRSsSug/v-deo.htmlsi=Q-6T3mi7GehEm8f3
Another clevelander my culantro is doing well. I didn’t know I had to trim it back so it all going to seed. Next year I will start the seeds and now I know what to do! Thank you!
Only the long leaves. I've done a couple planting videos this year and here is one of them: ua-cam.com/video/4LzOBRSsSug/v-deo.html&ab_channel=OviDuran
Thanks. I will probably return in a year or two but only to visit family. I don’t see myself recording any more videos there now that homesteading has become my passion.
Send me your address and I will send you some seeds. I have some to spare. But remember, it takes about 21 days for the seeds to germinate and the plant grows slowly. Take a look at some of my videos from March and April to see how I did it.

Yes, if you can't find culantro (recao) then cilantro can be used instead for sofrito. My wife has made it like that too in the past.

Hello. What type of soil do you use for culantro and throughout your garden?
Compost soil. I bought compost from a local company and they delivered a ton of it to my house.
