Fun facts: Everything Carole predicted happened in the film. (Falling off roof, setting himself on fire...) This was filmed entirely on the Universal Backlot on the residential street where Desperate Housewives would later be filmed. Ricky's house is the original Munster house from the 1960's TV series. It had to have vegetation set decoration in front and only be shot from certain angles to make sure audiences did not recognize it. Gale Gordon (Walter) is perhaps best known for his role as Lucy's foil in the Lucy Show (1962-68). A photo of Lucille Ball and Gale Gordon (taken during the production of that sitcom) is one of the photos on top of Walter's TV.
You dropped this the same day as TBR Schmitt, and I’m so happy! A friend and I were just talking the other day how we each thought this movie was a fever dream of our youth, because nobody we’d speak to about it had ever heard of it. Glad to see it’s getting attention!
I recognized that immediately too having grown up watching the Lucy Show ❤ I was so little then amazed I could remember it now 😊 I love pic on top of the TV
The movie was filmed during the 1988 Writer's strike, and because of that, the director, Joe Dante encouraged the cast to improvise and ad-lib. One scene that was improvised is when Tom Hanks picks up the gurney and puts himself in the ambulance.
10:46 That's one of the dynamics I love about this movie. These three grown men are basically playing a kids' game of "Detective" and "Army" like little boys, whereas Ray's young son behaves like a level-headed adult and older teen Ricky (whose parents are out of town) spends the whole week doing household chores (painting his house). The kids and wives are all bemused by the immaturity of the neighborhood husbands. It's hilarious and the comedy reminds me a bit of The Three Stooges. I remember watching this when I was around 12 and thinking: "Man, this reminds me of fun times as a kid when we'd get together and play GI Joe in our backyards." "Red Rover, Red Rover...let Ray go over!" Haha. Rumsfeld was my favorite character in the film.
Saw this at the theater and got the DVD as soon as it came out. One of my favorites. Loved watching your reaction to it - so glad you enjoyed the movie.
I don’t think this could be re-booted today. In every neighborhood I’ve lived in for the past 25 years, neighbors rarely see each other, much less know each other well enough to go on adventures together.
This is an underrated gem. First time I ever saw Bruce Dern in anything. The woman who played his wife also played Francine in American Dad, oddly enough.
I absolutely live this movie... and it was where I first heard of sardines. Growing up, my family hated seafood of all kinds, so I never really go to eat any. After watching this movie, I begged my mom for some sardines, and she got me a can because she's an awesome mom. Now, I love seafood of all kinds, but I have a very special place in my heart for sardines, and this movie.
This is one of my favorites on my Go-To-Comedy list, the ones I have seen countless times over the decades but still always bring great laughs and a bit of nostalgia. Not all comedies hold up over time but this one will always be a classic.
One of my favorites from the first time seeing it on HBO. Oddly, the pro critics didn't like it much - I would never invite them to any of my parties (surprise, surprise). I had this in my personal library on VHS tape, now on DVD. Bruce Dern plays the consummate Vietnam vet. Gale Gordon (Walter) was Lucille Ball's second husband, and longtime co-star (did you notice the photos of Lucy on Walter's TV?). It's nice to see a youngster like Corey Feldman take such interest and civic pride in his neighborhood.
Had a blast watching with you too - a brilliant movie - Joe Dante always delivers. Next you need to do Joe Dante's InnerSpace (1987) - you're gonna love it, I promise.
I hope the multiverse exists, if for no reason than for the possibility that in an alternate reality, The 'Burbs was a smash hit and they made multiple sequels .
'80s Joe Dante movies rawk! They just don't make movies with that sort of style anymore. 'Innerspace' is another good one. It's equal parts action-adventure and sci-fi/comedy, and it draws a lot of inspirado from Fantastic Voyage. 2:48 It always irritates me when people refer to a grill as a "barbecue." Two different methods of cooking, one fast, one slow. Barbecue is meant to be done slowly, sometimes taking half a day. Grilling is faster, but the end result tends to be less delectable. 4:34 "666" symbolically represents the Roman empire in an abstract/ideological sort of way.
"He can't come out until he resembles the man that I married." "Carol, We don't have that kind of time." Fun Fact: Robert Picardo and Dick Miller both appeared in Matinee (1993), also directed by Joe Dante. Final Bow Fact: Final appearance of Gale Gordon in a motion picture. He would however make a couple credited television appearances in 1991 before passing away in 1995 at age 89. Location Location Fact: The street was shot on the Universal back lot. It has been used for many films and television shows, including Desperate Housewives (2004). Some of the buildings have changed over time, but Walter's (Gale Gordon) house is the only building on the lot that hasn't changed at all. Dog Wangler Fact: Walter's (Gale Gordon) toy poodle Queenie was played by the same dog that played Precious in The Silence Of The Lambs (1991). Michael Jackson's famed chimpanzee, Bubbles, was a frequent guest on the set. He was brought to set, and taken care of, by the animal wrangler that brought and handled the dogs on the set. What Script Facts: The film was shot in sequence and was filmed during the writer's strike of 1988. Although Dana Olsen, the writer, appeared in the film, he was prohibited from contributing anything to the script while on set. For this reason, Joe Dante encouraged the actors to improvise many scenes. One example was the moment when Rumsfield rips the Klopeks' wallpaper, an idea from Bruce Dern. Rick Ducommun ad-libbed many of his lines, including the "Satan is good, Satan is our pal" dialogue. Tom Hanks and Carrie Fisher came up with the idea of playing along with Jeopardy! (1984) at home. Tom Hanks improvised the scene where he picks up the gurney and puts himself into the ambulance.
20:57 Plot Twist - Not in plain sight - he searched without a warrant - it's inadmissible and all the other evidence went in the explosion - They're gonna walk and will come back for revenge
This movie fucking rules and is right up my alley. I love how it's shot like an old horror movie. It's like a Dracula plot was suddenly dropped in modern day suburbia. Carrie Fisher's character is so funny to me as this saintly wife who thinks her husband has snapped, and there's so many little bits that never fail to crack me up, like when Ray keeps screaming after Art finished when they think the bone is Walter's.
Young Tom Hanks is an entirely different actor, and I kinda miss him. He used to be such a wacky guy, and you don't see much of it in his performances nowadays 😅 For more of young Tom - Big, Splash, Bachelor Party, Money Pit, Joe Vs The Volcano, and more.
Joe Dante specializes in awesome, weird and fun movies. In addition to this and Gremlins (1&2), he also directed Piranha, Innerspace, Small Soldiers and a great segment from Twilight Zone the Movie. Check out his work.👍
Love this Movie❤❤❤ and I Adore Bruce Dern, 2 of my favorite movies with him are Support Your Local Sherrif 1969 with James Garner and Down Periscope 1996 with Kelsey Grammer. Also Please do Tom Hank's Turner and Hooch 1989❤
I LOVE that film with James Garner, gonna have to buy me a copy of it from amazon and this includes Down Periscope. Didn't Bruce Dern play mostly villians his whole career ??? I remember he killed John Wayne in the-COWBOYS.A very good western and John Wayne told Dern the public would hate him for killing his character in the film.

Most important cameo: Walter's dog Queenie was in Pee Wee's Big Adventure, Batman Returns, and also played Precious in Silence of the Lambs. RIP Darla.
The old neighbor with his dog, of course, is Gale Gordon, one of the great stuffy comic foils of 40’s radio and 50’s TV. Note that when we see a picture of his late wife, she looks an awful darn lot like Lucille Ball….
This cast, this script, and the awesome distinctive style of the great Joe Dante: What's not to love? Plus, any movie with Brother Theodore is automatically 5 out of 5.
Another fun quirky movie that stars Tom Hanks is "Joe vs The Volcano', with Meg Ryan. Also, another strange movie is 'Nothing But Trouble' with Chevy Chase, Dan Ackroyd, John Candy, Demi Moore.
The actor playing Reuben Klopeck (the older neighbor with the wild hair and heavy accent) was Theodore Gotlieb. He became somewhat famous as Brother Theodore on Late Night with David Letterman. He would come on and get angry at Dave for everything. He was a stage performer in the NYC art community.
Would be surprised who are Satanists, so dont dimes that theory right off the bat - even those these people seem too obvious, its more likely those you would never suspect.
Oh, you were ready for this. Old school tom hanks when he was still doing comedy and standups. Many people dont know Hanks started in comedy not dramas.
So glad you kept the "this is Walter" bone scene in my fave part of film👍🎩
Fun Fact: The old man with the gravelly voice is played by Brother Theodore who also did the voice of Gollum in the animated Hobbit movie.
Now i gotta look that cartoon up. Haven't seen it since 3rd grade 1984.

This movie has a lot of the same energy as "The Money Pit," which also stars Tom Hanks. He does "bewildered" so hilariously.
