On the bench today is a Hot Wheels Porsche 356A Outlaw. This was gifted to me by Ron at SoMo Diecast and hung on my Christmas tree as an ornament a few months ago. It’s also the same model that my friend Ben from BP Custom Creations used to make me a custom flying car, which I cherish. It sits in a protective display case on my desk. Since then, Ben has created his own 3D model chassis, specific to the 356, complete with thrusters. He sent me the .stl files and asked me to give it a test print, so I said “Sure!” And here’s my work.
The Porsche 356 was Porsche's first production automobile. It’s a lightweight and nimble-handling, rear-engine, rear-wheel drive, two-door sports car that was available both in hardtop coupé and open configurations. Production started in 1948 at Gmünd, Austria, where Porsche built approximately 50 cars. That’s not far from my wife’s hometown, and there’s a museum there today in the original barn where everything began. In 1950 the factory relocated to Zuffenhausen, Germany (a suburb of Stuttgart), and general production of the 356 continued until April 1965, well after the replacement model 911 made its September 1964 debut.
Porsche handcrafted the early 356 bodies at Gmünd in aluminum, but when production moved to Zuffenhausen, Germany, in 1950, models produced there were steel-bodied.
Little noticed at its inception, mostly by a small number of auto racing enthusiasts, the first 356s sold primarily in Austria and Germany. By the early 1950s the 356 had gained some renown among enthusiasts on both sides of the Atlantic for its aerodynamics, handling, and excellent build quality. The class win at Le Mans in 1951 was a factor. By the time 356 production ended in 1965 approximately 76,000 had been produced. Amazingly, of the 76,000 originally produced, approximately half survive. I live in Switzerland and it’s not uncommon to see beautifully restored ones still traversing the Alpine passes.

FYI: I don't collect, display or sell the cars. All of the Maple Leaf Customs finished projects that are kid-friendly are put in custom blister packs and go to my local Goodwill store where they are given to children for free. If there are parts that can be swallowed, those cars are given as gifts to adult collectors that are fellow enthusiasts.

Thanks, Adam. The best part for me is putting them into the blister packs, and into a box, and heading out to the Goodwill Shop. Better they get into the hands of kids who'll play with them, than collecting dust at my place! 🍁😀

A Porsche build is always a treat. Mark, a question: I'm pretty jammed up with my existing summer schedule and another Opa build on August 1 would be three in three days for me, right at that time. I'm thinking that since we're doing a VW theme together on July 30, I'd make that my Opa Tribute, as we were all three good friends. Still a Buddy Build as planned, just including the Opa theme, a day or two early. Better than not doing one at all. Is that cool with you? Lemme know what you think! 🍁

This was such a cool video Andrew. The car ... Uh... Transpor module turned out great... DecAls came out so nicely and added to the concept so well... As did the purple and the rhinestone ljghts.... Amazing work by Ben on those creations... So cool that you customiser pro's work with each other and share build days, send one another cars to build... That's what community is about... Making people feel included and valued... I Love that.

Nice fun custom. Tuning in again and enjoy watching from Indiana, New Albany, Indiana to be exact. Just north, across the bridge from Louisville Kentucky. About 30 minutes from Churchhill Downs, home of the Kentucky Derby, The Louisville Slugger factory and museum and the birth place of heavyweight boxing champ Muhammad Ali.
A lot of cool stuff just across the bridge.

A very cool and unique build, the livery looks great too. BP Customs chassis was awesome, it's cool that you both pretty much used the same parts, but ended up with completely unique vehicles.

interesting conversion. looks like these little asphalt bubbles will continue to run, err, fly, for a couple hundred years longer. :) interesting graffitti patterns, too. ^^

Opa had a big impact on me when I was just starting out in the hobby a few years ago. I sent him a box of German cars - various Siku, Schuco castings, and he did a few of them up on his channel. He'll be missed. 🍁
@@MapleLeafCustoms ah, so this is where he got them from. :) I found his channel a while ago via youtube suggestions, and I found it fascinating what he did with these very simple castings from murrica, which are so rare here in europe. a while ago I found an old tootsie 57 Tbird, before that I had no idea about them. I think members of the US forces brought them here and later sold them in garage sales.
his means and tools seemed to be unsophisticated and take-what-you-have, but the results still looked great. and when he switched on the wire brush machine everything started to wander from the vibrations. XD
I'm gonna miss him, too.

Those Purple thrusters,not sure but i heard they are Taiwan knockoffs...yet they are werry powerful. Not recomended or TÜF aproved in the EU,but i guess you fly under the radar there not being å part of it 😓 🇨🇭

Me too, but I doubt it. I wonder why self driving electric cars aren't more prevalent right now, and I think it comes down to the insurance concerns. Who's responsible when one hits a little girl on a bicycle? ...Flying cars? Collision? Deductible? 🍁😂
