The justice system in Canada needs a complete overhaul. Total reform!!!
Maybe if the Crown or Parole Boards were held more accountable for releasing repeat offenders or dangerous individuals, there would be a lot less cases like this.

    • @Quest1luv

I second this. The overall public has continuously had to pay a heavy price, for the past mistakes of a few corrupt individuals. To end up giving up this much leeway to offenders and repeat offenders, is a direct slap in the face to law abiding citizens. In fact, those in the justice system should be charged if harm comes to someone because of their negligence.

The laws in Canada need to be revised. They are more for the criminals than the victims. The crown should never ever had gone for a lesser charge and as for the Parole Board, you can’t trust them at all. Our family has been through this when our son was murdered in 2013. A miscarriage of justice and to me it’s corrupt system. The government does not want anyone in prison. I’m so sorry that you lost your Mom and the torture that this criminal put you through 😢

@@chrisboucher9916 I think you might've misunderstood. No worries though, I'll try to clarify. When I say justice system, I am definitely not talking about the police officers - I'm referring to the courts and oftentimes, policy makers. As for if they're good parents, the answer is yes. They're supportive of her. No parent is perfect, but relatively speaking, hers and her grandmother are good. Would love to hear your take on it though, as it's always good to hear different pov's. I don't know what's worse, this piece of crap coward or how pathetic our justice system is. How the **** after killing a defenseless elderly woman in her own home, then trying to kill 3 other family members and u have a chance of parole after 16 years???? R u fn kidding me???? And how the hell was that only a 2nd degree murder when the guy fully planned and premeditated that 1st murder by where he parked, what he wore and his disgusting actions that followed. I'm not even mentioning the trauma he's left on the survivors now and his prior trauma he caused on the girl. Not even also mentioning how he tried to go after the 2 cops. SMH.... Someone fire the Prosecutor/Crown attorney for failing and embarrassing our justice system. Even the defense lawyer couldn't believe the Crown offered him that deal which he accepted probably in record time. The surviving grandma said it the best in closing and sadly that's true. The violence, number of victims, trauma and lifetime anguish that these ppl will have to live thru and the Crown with a smile on her face has the audacity to say "well it doesn't necessarily mean hell get out in 16 years". Do your job lady and serve us the ppl with strict sentences and make examples of these monsters instead of setting a precedent like u did here with what seems like a slap on the wrist for such horrible and violent crimes. I'm embarrassed and ashamed that ppl like these who prosecuted this guy is what we have to rely on to serve us and give us justice. And ontop not even give justice for the brave officers who risked their lives aswell to get this piece of trash locked up for life. My deepest condolences to the Araujo family and what they went thru and what they're continuing to go thru esp when there's even a chance this guy will be out again.

I couldn’t have said it better myself, you said what everybody thinks and are talking about the prosecutors and how they are failing the victims and their families. We’ve been through the same system in 2013 when our son was murdered…the prosecutor was incompetent and my husband asked him on the telephone where did he get his license in a Cracker Jack box. Many of those commenting on this story lack an important bit of information which is unavailable to most. In prison, it always becomes known what nature of crimes inmates are incarcerated for. Now understand that there's many ruthless and violent inmates within those walls. Many of whom also have children and families. These do not take well the knowledge of such inmates amongst them and thus they become targeted for 'jailhouse justice' which is an entirely different beast. This perverse man will live in fear and in all likelihood protective custody for his entire sentence or until he is murdered in prison. Take some comfort in that.

My ex assaulted me and smashed my computer Christmas Day, 2022. He would have done more to hurt me, but my dad was able to pull him off of me. His trial was in February of 2024 and I was just informed that while the judge had, “grave concerns” about his actions they were letting him off because he promised he would never come back to the city I live in. I explained to them that this is the fourth time he has done this to a partner, but they just didn’t care. Let that sink in. Yes, that doesn’t mean he will ever get parole - but still this means that once he does inevitably apply for parole, this poor family has to fight for *why* he shouldn’t ever be released. Then they have to do that every single time he re-applies. Why should they have to continue to suffer like that?!? As if what happened to them collectively isn’t enough, now they have to also have his parole eligibility in their minds in 13 years time…. This man cannot be rehabilitated. This man should *NEVER* walk free, under any circumstance. God forbid he ever does….

8:30 ~ I understand that when someone is in the situation of being faced with a man w/ a gun, threatening them in public daylight, it may be very hard to contest their assailant in the moment.
But the truth of the matter is that, the one with the gun is really really hoping you will succumb to his verbal threat. The last thing on earth that would be in his interest is to discharge his firearm in broad daylight, injuring or killing somebody, without knowing who could have seen him, who now has eyes on him, while he has to flee the scene, in foot, having called everyone’s attention to the sound of his weapon for blocks around him.
Offenders who are in this position, tend to think real hard about how to verbally pose their threat in an attempt to coerce the victim into quietly following them to a more secluded area, which is exactly what the man did in this case.
I would never deign to give advice to resist, but resist on the spot is exactly what I would do. Sure there’s risk. But you have to weigh that risk against the risk of being in a quiet place with this offender, where the possibilities for their will to be imposed exponentially multiply.

I feel really sorry for what the family has endured. Stalking should be judged more strictly. Stalkers can easily become murders. Hope this experience will make the judicial system more severe.

It's how most serial killers start out. Bundy, ridgeway, btk, keeper, rifkin, sells, shawcross, brudos the list could go on so why they don't take stalking seriously is unbelievable and it's terrifying never knowing when they're going to pop up. The police are as useful when it comes to stalking in the UK as they are in Canada.

Such a shame to the justice system. It serves the criminals, not victims. The victims have to go through the nightmare all over again to make sure that murderers, rapists don't come out. When do they heal??? The justice system needs a reform. Stop being gentle with those who don't deserve that.

What an awful story. All the damage Alex did to that good family; he ruined their lives and committed a murder. And the sentence is 13 years without possibility of parole?? Why is this called "sentenced to life in prison"? I don't understand that ridiculous terminology. The sentence is surely "thirteen years in prison." And then he can tell as many lies as possible, gain freedom, and commit similar crimes??

  • @nancybannerman1224

It is so sad that the victims stay victims forever, especially with the thought that he may get out of prison one day. They are the ones in prison with that fear. I am not a person who believes in killing, but I wish the police had managed to take Alex's life that day.
I agree with other people's comments that the Canadian judicial system needs a major revamping. It is pathetic that a person can kill someone and attempt to kill 3 others, plus rape a young girl, and all he got was life with the possibility of parole in 13 years. I hope to God that the parole board never grants him parole, ever!!
I really enjoy these shows. It is nice to see some Canadian crime, and not always the USA. 🇨🇦

They seem like good people, but there's no way after multiple red flags and warnings throughout the day I would have sent my elderly, unsteady-on-her-feet mother to check out a possible violent situation and then take her BACK there without at any point calling the police. As soon as tyres on both vehicles were slashed and they knew he was out I would immediately be on the phone to police.

I’m not sure which is worse, the sentence or the piss poor prosecution office. There are two sides to every story but whichever way you look at all these facts, including the fact that he already had conditions which he had to adhere to after the initial harassment crime, there is no way this disgusting human being should ever be allowed back on the public streets. Not even mentioning the fact that he held a gun to police officers. Absolute disgrace!!

3 years of sexual assualt on a minor, 2 x attempted murder, malicious wounding, aggravated assault, stalking and murder and he can apply for parole in 13 years. This is an absolute indictment on the Canadian legal system, it's no wonder people take the law into their own hands. If he gets out and begins to harass them again, what other choice would they have but to protect their family?

Where the innocent get life sentences while the criminals get a slap on the wrist, making Police’s jobs much harder than it should be.
Bring back the chain gang, make criminals accountable for their crimes instead of giving them diplomas paid by all of us tax payers!!

The only silver lining in this case is that SA has four parents who all actively intervened when they discovered the grooming and rape, as well as two amazing grandmothers who put their lives on the line to protect her.
The fact that Meaghan calls SA her daughter and Meaghan's mother calls SA her granddaughter shows how close they were. SA has an amazing support system. I hope they can all grow closer and heal.
And I hope f-ing Alex Bates gets a taste of REAL justice in prison, since apparently he's not getting it from the courts.
