NHS sued over vaginal mesh implants - BBC News

  • The Victoria Derbyshire programme has learnt that more than 800 women in the UK are taking legal action against the NHS and manufacturers over what they describe as "barbaric" vaginal mesh implants. The implants, which are used to treat pelvic organ prolapse and bladder incontinence after childbirth, can erode and cut into the vagina - causing severe pain and discomfort - and leaving some women registered disabled. The UK regulatory body MHRA said it "sympathises" with the women affected but that it believes the benefits outweigh the risks. An MHRA spokesman said it was "committed to help address the serious concerns raised by some patients".
It added: "The greater proportion of the clinical community and patients support the use of these devices in the UK."
Ethicon said "these devices have helped millions of women".
It said it had "acted appropriately and responsibly in the research, development and marketing of its pelvic mesh products" and would robustly defend legal action.

Thanks to the women who bravely took part in this interview. I can't believe the extreme suffering and hope this procedure will be banned in the UK with immediate effect.

There are good and not so good doctors. The GP's know who they are. I promise you TVT's are still the best surgical solution for bad incontinence. The alternatives are worse. Retired Dr.

Both the company and the NHS are culpable.
The company knew that if it failed, it would cause MASSIVE problems and the NHS should never have ordered them because they would have known the clinical outcomes where questionable at best.
This is tax money being wasted by terrible NHS management one again.

Every female pelvis is not made the same so the mesh should not be one size fits all if you get my drift here. This works for some women but not all. These doctors are monsters.

Three and a half years ago I had to have a mesh implant for a rectocele repair. That summer I suffered from continued bladder infections and was very very poorly being prescribed permanent antibiotics to manage septicaemia brought about by infection. The repair stopped the problem... But I do have problems with intercourse which is painful... we manage... Women who have had this procedure need monitoring support... The procedure was necessary... what are the alternatives?

    • @phillipsmith4485
      @phillipsmith4485 2 роки тому

Rectocoeles do not cause bladder infections. They cause the feeling of a bulge out of the vagina, and sometimes problems empying the rectum. A rectocoele would have to be huge to interfere with bladder emptying. A large cystocoele is more likely to affect bladder function. Did they repair a cystocoele (anterior prolapse) too?
Some surgeons tried using mesh to repair rectoceles, but the results were no better than standard suturing repairs, so its not done now. Sadly some rectocele repairs do result in pain with intercourse, and the best treatment is vaginal oestrogen cream or tablets. Ask your doctor for some. They are not HRT as such and have no bad effects.

Today again this is news and I want to scream. Finally world is listening and believing that women like me never lied when they complained of extreme vaginal back and physical pains. I had such amount of blood loss and painful periods that I thought I will die. I had infection could not sit longer and lost sleeping in one bed with husband. I can guarantee that every word of complaint is true. No one can imagine the horror of this device. I doubted myself but no it's true that this device damaged and ruined lived then improving. 2011 and I am still suffering.

They put mesh in me in 2008. It was wrapped all around my bladder, which was sutured to my pelvic wall, wrapped around my vagina and my colon! I have cronic infections, pain and incontinence since then.....I have a 3rd surgery and they cannot take any of it out. The tissue has grown through the mesh and it cannot be removed!

The erosion rate quoted in this video (20%), relates , as stated to in the video, to TVM. This is not TVT. TVM was a product called Prolift, or Total Vaginal Mesh. This was a very large mesh product used in major vaginal prolapse which wrapped all around the vagina. It was withdrawn in 2012, partly due to the erosion rate. The majority of these erosions were small areas within the vagina where the surgical incisions had not healed properly, due to poor, oestrogen deficient vaginal tissues, revealing the mesh. Commonly this was asymptomatic.Treatment by trimming the revealed segment of mesh and sewing over the vagina, followed by vaginal oestrogen treatment, was usually all that was necessary to treat this.
The erosion rate with a properly inserted TVT is well below 5%. You cannot continue to mislead the public by mixing up figures for TVM, TOT and retropubic TVT. I know they are all types of mesh operations, but they are like chalk and cheese. It's like saying you should not have a tooth filled because the complication rate sometimes seen with major orthodontic procedures.

This brings up one of the reasons for the initial use of mesh in prolapse. After the overwhelming success of the original, well researched Ethicon TVT, it was thought that similar success should be expected for prolapse mesh use. It was not, and prolapse mesh is no longer routinely used. Very sadly TVT was 'tarred with the same brush' as prolapse mesh, confused with other TVT immitations too, and has now been stopped for the time being. So women have lost the benefits of the ground breaking original TVT.

There are natural ways to functionally rectify urinary incontinence. These I applied, after doing research, and as result do not suffer from this condition anymore. None of the natural interventions were suggested to me before undergoing a vaginal mesh procedure; neither was I warned about any possible complications. Surgical interventions such as this: Inserting insoluble plastic material permanently into the human body - in my humble opinion - merely reflects the ignorance of the medical establishment.

May I ask what state you live in? How far are you from the DFW area of TX? Would you be able and willing to travel to a Dr in TX that WILL LISTEN to you?? I know this because I have him for my Dr now. I had a dr previously that done 3 mesh surgeries on me in a 2yr span. He wouldn't listen to my symptoms, he said they were in my head and not related to the mesh surgeries. After the 3rd failed surgery in 2yrs time I decided to find another Dr. He listened to me, he done more test in the 1st visit alone than I had done in all the visits combined in the previous drs visits/surgeries. He was very compassionate about how I had been feeling for 3yrs. He done surgery amd removed all of my previous meshes done by the other dr. Mine was so bad I was in surgery for 3½ hrs! So I understand your pain and frustration! I will be more than happy to pass his information along to you if seeing him is a doable option. Just let me know.
I'm sorry for what you are going thru. My prayers are with you.

Women who sued in the US" in the billions" doesn't explain the fact that it became a class action suit and most of us got $2,000 or under. Such a tiny amount of so-called
" compensation "for the immense suffering and pain and broken bodies and broken marriages and broken spirits that are the result of these horrific medical devices. Having problems with your mesh feels worse than labor pain and being tortured with broken glass, only at the end it doesn't go away and you don't have anything beautiful to show for it. So much for the" harm none"oath that these doctors took.

Poor Clair, but her severe pain still has no explanation. Just because she had a successful tape in the past doesn't mean that the pain is due to the mesh. It could have other causes. She needs a careful examination by a respected urogynaecologist. The other lady seems to blame her procedure for her 'fibromyalgia'. They are looking for a cause and due to the press and social media around mesh products have been drawn into the discussions. Clair could have endometriosis for instance, even after a hysterectomy.
If my dear wife had life altering stress incontinence, confirmed by urodynamics, and not responsive to conservative measures I would advise her to have a TVT, carefully put in by an expert who has a record of his/her results. If three years later she had pelvic pain I would not suspect the TVT.

    • @maricamaas2326

And then you could be wrong for not doing so: The mesh could - over time - have hardened - possibly be disintegrating - only to then start injuring surrounding flesh? Also, plastic is an endocrine disruptor (mimicking Estrogen); thereby being an anabolic/carcinogenic substance with the ability to in due course induce various auto-immune conditions. Chemical stress - leading to sympathetic dominance - is for example known to cause weight gain, which is a risk factor for various diseases.
