As someone who has sung on choir for her entire life, the smooth layering of their deep rich voices is absolutely beautiful and so pleasant for the ears
This performace is about the Hawaiian goddess Lono, lono was a god of peace he was the god that was honored during makahiki season, a season of rest . Then their was the Hawaiian war god Kukaʻilimoku, he was the season of war and labor
Been watching the Merrie Monarch since I was a little girl. You can feel the mana from the ancestors. I’m so proud that I’m from Hawai’i Ne.... Always in my Heart 💜
Kalei K the button does get hit by accident! Especially if young children are around or people watching on phones, and the more views equal the more times it happens. Look for the good and positives and they’ll come your way💚
I’ve been watching these and think it’s absolutely WONDERFUL they have the late queens picture in frame. To have her there for the living and breathing practices of her people that she caught so hard not to lose to the white man. ❤️
This is one of the most amazing things I've ever seen! I can't stop watching it. It's so beautiful and mesmerizing; I could watch it all day! It's crazy how easy they make it look. Getting low to the ground and back up while still having their voices ring clear? They're so strong!
Wait a minute--they are singing, dancing, playing their own percussion... meanwhile i am over here struggling to pat my head and rub my tummy at the same time 😂😂😂 Mad respect for these ladies.
PureAloha78 yes... and the men are MUCH harder. They trained not far from where I lived when I was stationed in Hawaii. To this day, I wish I’d given it a try.
Yes! I danced with Kumu Kunewa Mook and he was very strict with our hair. We had to let it grow out and not cut it ever. Then before competition, he would cut our hair all together so we had all the same exact length.
Thank you for uploading this it's been years since I saw my last Merry Monarch. It still has the same effect on me. May your ancestors never be forgotten.
Loved everything, especially the part where they were in separate rows and each row chanted and danced a different part! Very talented and beautiful young women!! 🌸❤️🌸
❤💕😘💕💕 I don't understand the language but the dance so beautiful the culture of Hawaii. It's amazing I visit Hawaii. It is amazing the places we went to is breathtaking. It remind me back home Philippines ❤
Wow what a beautiful and unique hula. I loved the complimentary yet opposite movements of the girls.... and all that beautiful, flowing hair! Powerful. And I no say that just cuz I live Waimanalo side, a great while ago.
It's wonderful watching all hula dance are in sequence.i my hope is people actually visit BEAUTIFUL state of HIWAII like i did you will falling in LOVE😀😀😀
I was born in Honolulu, Hawaii was there for only a year my dad was in the Army so thats why I was there but till this day for some reason I feel like I need to go back after all these years and to know the language and culture. This Hula dance was beautiful and awesome to have seen on youtube the girls were beautiful.
How fortunate we are to have the rich polynesian culture of Hawaii as part of our diverse heritage asa Americans. We need to treat this diversity as the national treasure it is.
Grupo lindo, estou impressionado com a atitude, organização coreografica, canção e dedicação das mulheres . ja virei grande fã e nao sei quantas vezes já assisti. Parabéns.. I From brazil s2
It hurts my soul that the British saw Hawaiians and thought "let's colonize them and steal their land!" Instead of working in partnership with a Hufflepuff like Nation they ruined it. If I was sailing the "New To ME World" and met the Hawaiians, it'd be nice to chill and say "ok, seeya same time next year, bye." I wouldn't COLONIZER them. The audacity. Glad their traditions survived, as the UK did a number on them, their resources and their islands.
You would have to have very strong knees to do this I think. Just thinking about doing the move where they lay all the way back with their knees in kneeling position makes me hurt! Mad kudos to all these folks who dance so beautifully. I'm almost certain many of them are dancing with a bit of pain in their knees. But they sure don't let it stop them.

I wonder how they do it . Hawaiian music is so special .

are the translation and meaning published anywhere?

I found this in the comment section, i believe the Hula & Mele are about the god Lono.
Sou brasileira. Amo suas músicas, algumas delas uso na massagem Lomi Lomi que faço em minha clientes. Linda voz. Te desejo todo sucesso. Gratidão 🙏
Having no understanding of the language somehow doesn’t influence the impact that performance has on me. It brings tears to my eyes.
The strength and beauty of this performance is universal, and no explanation is needed.
ME TOO!!!

I identify with your comment. Here I am whipping.
What a wonderful thing to be watching at 1 a.m., even though I don’t know the language this gave me the chills and I was totally emerged. Beautiful.
Its hawaiian
ya
Hawaiian is a critically endangered language so may as well help keep it alive by learning a little.
Lily Raimey do you know any Hawaiian?

How can anyone NOT like this performance?! They performed AND THEN SOME! Haters gonna hate

M. Ruby same here. I could never do what they do. Hula is a very hard dance to master. Mad respect to these ladies.

It is a gift something profound and can not be an explanation for🥲🥰☮️🌟💖🤙🏽🏝💜
Oh my god, the sync in the dance. So mesmerizing. They did an amazing job!
Wow!! Those girls have abs of steel! #fierce #chickenskin 💚
So glad that they were able to hold on to the culture and not have it stomped out over the years.
A beautiful example of ‘ili’ili hula. I like the slow tempo of the mele , accented by the clicking of the stones. The dancers are extraordinary.
When a group is in sync right from the start, you've got my attention and I'm watching to the very end. Spectacular job ladies. Bravo.
Breathtaking.
Seeing this in person must be an amazing experience.
I purchase the DVD to show my students.
They become transfixed.
Absolutely love all the girls hair, you can really tell they have pride in everything they have so beautiful in display and dance so graceful.

So beautiful. Brings back so many happy memories. Raised on the Island of Oahu. Even danced hula as a child and later taught it to my Girl Scouts.

This is not just hula but something much deeper as the history and pride of Hawai'i comes alive. Oh so much they give💖🤙🏽🏝

How fortunate we are to have the rich polynesian culture of Hawaii as part of our diverse heritage asa Americans. We need to treat this diversity as the national treasure it is.
Actually you need to de-colonise Hawai'i and give it back to Kanaka maoli is it was illegally annexed by your terrorist country
Beautiful, powerful women with beautiful and powerful music and dance. AMAZING!
What a testimony to their strength.
I would be needing knee transplants after this.
They all have such beautiful heads of hair
Simplified beautiful, don't understand the language but it's beautiful. Trinidad

Bravo à vous les filles ofa atu
Ive been watching the last Merrie Monarchs and it seems now like less people are coming 😕
I wonder if they all have such long hair or do some wear wigs? Traditional chanting & dance always gives me goose bumps!
That was the best hula performance I have seen! Mahalo!
Best I've seen
He akua. Ma waho oʻoe. E kāhea Mahalo nui wau
