Random crits don't actually benefit worse players, cuz if you're doing well then your crit chance actually ramps up. I forget the exact formula but it's why medic and engineer can get melee crits pretty much on demand (along with melee weapons having a higher base crit chance).
You raise a great point, I wish I had time to cover this in the video but TF2 wasn't a huge focus. Melee weapons start at 15% and ramp to 65% while primary and secondary weapons begin at 2% and ramp to around 12% - over the course of about 1,000 damage dealt in the last 20 seconds. I agree that these crit rampings themselves benefit better players, however, I think random crits in general still benefit new players more. If these crit rampings weren't there, then random crits would HEAVILY benefit new players, whereas now they just moderately benefit new players. If a player is capable of consistently dealing upwards of 1,000 damage in a 20 second period, they probably don't really need the crits.
The reason medic gets a lot of random crits is because of how his crits work. Medics crits rely on his healing if he has done a lot of healing he will get a higher crit chance. Engineer gets crits because his sentry's damage goes toward his crit chance.

Serious talk i think it depends on the state of the game, i play World of Warcraft and one thing it always bothered me in arena are not the crits but the inflated numbers for crits and chances to get some buff and one shot me OR making my life so miserable that i had to waste resources to save me but dying later anyways because i didn't have said resources.
resource management in games can be really frustrating when done wrong. i hate how in Dark Souls 1 the player permanently loses consumable items when they die
