Except for the fellow at 7:02, I wonder how many of these contraptions were actually flight tested beforehand? Not many, I'd guess. Several key aircraft construction concepts seem lost on most people, namely wing loading, balance, center of gravity and structural bracing.

If I wanted to take part I'd use a plane with roll and pitch control, just to make sure the thing stays level while flying, and it would of course be strong enough to not fold up after leaving the ramp and have decent aerodynamics. For me, this ain't about goofing around but about going far and looking good while doing so. And I'd probably have some way of doubling the speed my pushing guys can run in order to generate enough lift for the plane to not lose any altitude while leaving the ramp. I'm sure I'd get a decent distance that way and with a good design I might even score some extra points for looks.
There are also design limits that really cut short your ability to make something that can go very far unless you put a lot of thought into it. As others noted, it's more about fun.
