Ah another series by these two, didn't know they were doing that. I've only read Leviathan Wakes, enjoyed most of the show (didn't watch it). I read the first Expanse same time as I read the firs Spiral Wars book by Joel Shepherd, Renegade, and I decided to go in the direction of the Spiral Wars (just finished book 9 last month). Not sure I want to start another space opera right now, but this doesn't sound bad and sounds entertaining enough.
There are going to be 3 of these books. I enjoyed it, but I also enjoy their writing style. Smooth is definitely part of it, so your response is understandable.
Oh, I read all of the Expanse and did have fun with it, with some books more than others and I did have fun with this one. I just wish they would sometimes commit themselves when opening up topics that could be interesting to discuss and not just wave at them. Their strength is definitely the interpersonal stuff which makes them interesting in that they write very classic, almost old-school sf where characters often took the backseat. I'll definitely read the rest of the series but at this point I'd be surprised if much will change in their formula.
Hey Raf. Thanks for this 🤘 Binged the first 7 expanse books a few years ago and got sidetracked waiting for book 8&9 to release, will read them all eventually I think. They were fun, in a popcorn kinda way. But think it's definitely over hyped, Peter f Hamilton, and like you say Alastair Reynolds, Ian M Banks etc,, definitely did it better! Just picked up a few Ian McDonald books (desolation road, river of gods and Brasyl.) Cheers 🤘
I read the first book in The Expanse and while i didn't dislike it, i didn't continue the series. I don't know yet if i wanna pick up this book. i might, but i'm not in a rush. I do like trial/competitions in stories, so who knows what'll happen
I disagree on the whole racism in that world part. Those Belter People came off being pretty racist with some of the lame stuff they do. Are all the SOL PEOPLE like that?

It is definitely a fast and entertaining read, so if a bit more imagniative sf and trial stories work for you you should feel well entertained.
