I went in with EXTREME expectations. It exceeded them. At one point multiple people said out loud, "It can't end here." It didn't. Instead it went Mission Impossible!
See it IMAX or 4DX but don't miss it. I saw it 4DX one and twice IMAX. Seeing the F-14 actually put me in tears. Slick way to reintroduce it.
    Visuals. Acting. Go see it!

OK, just returned from the theatre, a large IMAX screen no less! Cruise's brief appearance before the movie started, as himself and not his character, telling us how much fun he had making it and how he hoped we liked it (words to that effect) struck me as authentic and also something I have never seen before in a Hollywood movie, and it worked for me. I loved wizoo Bob's call sign, the movies funniest line. Loved John Glenn as, I mean Ed Harris...., as the commanding officer. Thanks to your tip, I watched for the eyebrows G force thing, happened. ANY pilot, go see it immediately, on the biggest screen in your area, with the best sound system, it will roll your socks down, no matter what you fly, yeah it had some hokey moments but it was all in good fun and HUGELY entertaining. 5 stars, thanks again for your insights. Now get back to work on the 21.

@@CLEAREDDIRECT Again? So I'm not the only one wanting to see it again! I see where the actual pilot who flew the scenes with Cruise in the backseat, just saw it with his family at a drive in no less. One question, and searching the internet has not helped: I get that the flying was the real deal, but that scene where they fly thru the bridge on a knife edge, that was surely staged I would expect? Maybe no one else has asked about that scene because it was obvious?

    • @funkybluesman42

@@portnuefflyer I think they did all the flying for real, but would have used plenty off effects in making things look closer than they were, like flying up a snowy mountain just a few feet off the mountain, and, probably, flying knife edge through a bridge. Things like Maverick's F18 shooting up between two other F18s flying in formation would have been a composite of multiple shots rather than actually flying up through that tiny gap, things like that.

Man I feel your pain. I wanted to be a fighter pilot after seeing the first one as a little kid but by the time I became a teenager, I wanted to be a SEAL instead. So imagine my disappointment when I was told I wasn't qualified for either because of my glasses. To make matters worse, any sort of corrective surgery would immediately disqualify me as well. I ended up settling for the Navy's nuclear engineering program. An interesting field to be sure but, nowhere near as interesting as special forces or naval aviation.

What a phenomenal film. My favourite aviation details were the ones that you know had to have been put in by people who know the subject. Maverick including "with information Alpha" (the ATIS) in his call to tower when taxiing out in the Darkstar was a great little example. Wouldn't have mattered if it wasn't there, but having that sort of little thing in shows the care and passion put into the movie.
Near the end, after the carrier landing when he's back at the bar, I remember thinking to myself "man, the only way this movie could be any more perfect would be if Mav flies off into the sunset in his Mustang" and then, sure enough...

  • @redmustangredmustang

This really was an improvement on the original. Using actual Super Hornets F version to film it on. Originally Tom Cruise wanted the F-35C to be the main jet but the Navy said no. Either way this is the real deal. Even getting the F-14 through CGI was awesome as well. I am betting all former fighter pilots were just smiling saying this is awesome and this is as close as you get to us flying. Either way I wouldn't be surprised if the Navy gets a good recruitment boost like the original Top Gun did which really boosted recruitment for the Navy. You know in real life the F-22 would just run circles around all those aircraft. Right now and for the upcoming future the F-22 is the best aircraft when it comes to a dogfight there is right now.
Note the reason why the F-14 Tomcat got retired was Dick Cheney, yes that one killed it off along with Congress. When Cheney was defense secretary in 1991 they wanted a replacement for the Tomcat that was cheaper and the Super Hornet eventually was the successor. Northrup Grumann tried for the Super Tomcat but Cheney and Congress said no too expensive and went with the Super Hornet.

Hi g. Thanks for the super nice comment. Did you serve in the US or for one of our allies? If so, thank you for your service. Flying a fighter was absolutely never like anything I'll ever do again in my life (kinda sadly). I loved 99% of my time in the cockpit. I'm glad the term "fighter pilot" is still respected, though like anything, there are differing opinions out there. We can be a rough bunch. I respected all of my peers for their impressive intellect and ability (present company excluded :P). None of us liked the administrative part of the job (AKA "queep"). Unfortunately fighter pilots tend to go above and beyond and other folks in the military tended to take advantage of that. Plus "leaning" of the force increased non-primary job workload for everyone, but we tended to pick up the most. Especially as you collect rank, your flying wanes a little and queep increases tons. I was very lucky and got to 1) fly my whole career, and 2) instruct, and 3) become a test pilot so I flew more than most fighter pilots got to at the rank of O-5. Anyway, overall it was amazing and I'm honored to have the nation's trust to be the instrument of delicate political matters at times. It was an experience I'll always treasure. Someday I'll make a series about "fighter pilot stories". I'm sure you have a lot of great stories about your elite experience. Thanks again for your nice comment.

@@CLEAREDDIRECT I appreciate the response. I'm an american born to Israeli immigrants. Semi-against my will, i got caught up in the draft during my college days over there, just like every other citizen, including my parents. I decided to make the most of my service, went for a unit called Egoz (plenty of info online if you're interested), got in, and spent the majority of my service doing what we trained to do. To my understanding, the IDF and US military are great allies and, being a citizen of both nations, I'd love it if it stayed that way. Wish I was able to serve both flags as well. I've met a few fighter pilots like yourself and most came across as some real arrogant guys (unlike yourself). Would you say that [you felt as if] your peers took advantage of you guys because of this sort of 'savior complex' which could be a natural side effect of the job? because it was like that with soldiers amongst me including myself. anyway, i think it's incredible what you guys are able to do in what is to me the current height of human engineering. sorry if i'm picking your brain too much but for israeli fighter pilots, even after they retire they can't be seen or heard talking about their service unless specifically cleared to and even then, their face will be blurred out. First, GREAT REVIEW! I absolutely enjoyed your take.
Regarding "inaccuracies", what I liked is many of them were so excessive as to be funny, and the more you know the funnier they are, like turning it up to "11" or 12 or whatever. I especially like the research plane was just fine at Mach 10, (an absurd not achievable speed), but Mav has to, just has to, creep it up past 10 to destruction.
I've a few miles from the Inyokern Airport, the old NOTS station, where the P51 hanger scene was shot. The mountain scapes and even the crags Tom flies through, I know very well from living, hiking, and climbing there for 33 years. I, like most of the local population, work or worked at China Lake, so we are pretty fired up about the local scenes and story.

The “fly through the canyon without flying above the walls” mission is in every single Ace Combat game, Maverick being a veteran instructor who’s never been promoted above Captain is literally Captain Bartlett from Ace Combat 5, and the way the character development and story plays out just feels like cutscenes from an Ace Combat game, as does stealing a plane from an enemy hanger for the final mission.

Yes and no. Rolling scissors is what happens when a mature neutral one circle fight has one fighter bid up and the other bid down. The ACMI playback looks like a double helix 🧬 DNA. If they gravitate downhill, the fight hits the training floor almost immediately and we “knock it off.” Pure fantasy that they fought all the way to the ground. Our typical unlimited maneuvering training rule floor (hard deck) is 5,000 feet AGL. Limited or restricted maneuvering can get you much lower, but you hit a training rule stop almost immediately for visual engagements (safety of flight).

Also, did Maverick chose to stay as Captain and not rank up just to fly planes? Not sure if the movie was clear on that.
When they were training and Maverick flew upwards and the person behind Maverick's plane had trouble due to the sun light shining, but don't they have tinted sun glasses on those helmet?

Of course...I keep adding to the pile because I couldn't stay on course with an autopilot bolted to my keester. Dang. 'Tube of shame' just got a bunch of coffee injected into my sinuses again. That face when you say it. Priceless.

So how does Mav maintain his rep as THE world-beating Sierra-Hotel stick jockey barring none when he winds up all his major missions as a pedestrian?

Yeah, being an ex-EA-6B guy I kinda wondered why they didn't have a Growler in there to launch a few HARM's to take out the SAM radars (which we never saw). I also noticed that when they had the air to ground radar up in the Hornets, there were no ground returns at all, but then it did show an air contact. Neat trick. Also, when Rooster was in the back seat of the Tomcat and he finally finds the circuit breaker for the "coms", when he pushes it in, the radar comes on and then he tells Maverick that coms are back on line. There were a few other things as well, like the flares for the radar guided SAMs, and the Gatling cannon in modern fighters does NOT sound like that. But all in all I thoroughly enjoyed it. I went to a regular theater with my grandson. I will go see it again with my wife in an Imax theater.
I'm guessing the gen 5 (Su-57?) fighters were CGI cuz the Russians certainly wouldn't let them be in an American movie getting shot down. Besides, there's only a handful of flyable airframes and I've heard they can't hardly keep those in the air.

I think adding EW/SEAD to the story (not documentary) would have been unnecessarily complicated to explain to a general audience with no payoff in plot. They were getting shot down no matter what.
