A Mongolian biyelgee is always a joy and particularly needed for a proper wake !!!
For those who are unfamiliar, a "biyelgee" is a traditional Mongolian dance, originally designed to be performed inside a round, tent-like ger (= _yurt,_ in Turkish). Musicians make up the center, and the other invitees form a circle along the outer edges of the ger, either sitting or standing. All of the guests then move together, mostly in concert and in a manner that reflects the lyrics for any given song. Because of a ger's space limitations, motions are constrained, with the hands and arms used to imitate the motions of Mongolia's great hunting eagles or other flying birds, horseback riding, archers in action, etc. (A biyelgee has comparative similarities to the stylized Hawaiian hula dancing.)
Another great biyelgee was performed to The HU's "Wolf Totem" in 2019 --- a sort of flash mob gathered on the plaza in front of Government Palace in Ulaanbaatar. I Really dig how this band blends the modern and the traditional and have managed to expose a lot more people to Facets of Mongolian culture as a result. I"m a born and raise American. I've never been out of the country and probably never will. Without the internet and bands like this, I would never have seen anything like this. And while I don't know much about the culture and don't speak the language, Music has always felt like an international language and getting to experience the emotions the music tries to convey is still really cool.
Buy the SHIT out of this album. Worth every penny.
