    I seen a total eclipse in 1999 in Newquay Cornwall. Travelled 500 miles to watch. We watched it from an ancient burial ground. We weren't aware of that at the time. But seeing totality was incredible! It was very moving. Everything went cold and dark and all the birds flew over our heads to roost in the cliffs. It was just outstanding! I felt so lucky and still do!

    I saw the 2017 eclipse, and even though no video can totally capture the experience, the shot at 3:13 or so is the most accurate of the golden ring effect that I've seen. Most videos have an up close image at that point, which is fine, but this one gives context and focus.

    I have had that feeling Brian! Only it was a lunar eclipse. You could actually really see the spherical shape of the moon in the shadow and it was humbling. I thought the same same thing....
    WOW the moon is this huge rock rock hurdling through space and the earth her partner, and I am on another rock hurdling through space. What an awesome phenomenon, and more awesome is I can comprehend it and bear witness. Just amazing.

    That longest eclipse for 5000 years will also happen to fall on the 217th anniversary of the launching of Apollo 11, the first manned mission to land on the Moon.
    I was lucky enough to experience a full eclipse here in the UK in 1999. And honestly it was incredible. We had struggles from Devon (where I was staying with friends) to Cornwall, and had been stuck in traffic for ages. Eventually we just abandoned the car, and managed to congregate with friends and many many other people in the corner of a country lane, and watched in awe as it slowly got eerily darker... Suddenly the birds EXPLODED with noise, shrieking in fear and confusion, their instincts telling them to find a place to roost for the night. The people, meanwhile, got quieter and quieter, awe-struck silence sweeping over the crowd as one of the rarest and most incredible sights in nature was revealed to us all. Spontaneous applause broke out soon after - if there is anything we Brits love more than queuing it is applauding. Doesn't matter who, what, where,when, why or how - it is simply how we express admiration.
    All too quickly it was over. The avian population had yet another freak out as the Sun began to reappear, and we could hear livestock from nearby fields expressing their own 'appreciation' of the cosmic wonders happening before us. We found our vehicles, and repaired to the pub for luncheon, pints of cider, pool, and the swapping of how it had affected each of us.
    Genuinely one of the greatest experiences of my life. I was not yet even 19 then, I am nearly 43 now. And I want to see it again before I depart this realm.

    This was the solar eclipse in the morning of 22 July 2009. I had a test in the morning and I was out in my garden with my books and all. I had no clear view of the sun and suddenly it was completely dark and I thought what happened. After a few minutes, darkness went away and continued with my study, went to school, wrote the test, came back and then realised after seeing the news that it was this rare solar eclipse that had occurred.

Some humility (other cultures may also have some useful knowledge) and a deeper perspective on things (sociologic significance of these religious gatherings) may also be of some use

    His comments about faith and science are ridiculous. People from thousands of years ago learned the stars over generations of observation and data gathering, built beautiful builidings and monuments that helped keep up with the movement of stars and astronomical phenomenon. But they sure didn’t have all the fancy tools we do. We’ve seen so little of the universe, yeah we think so highly of what we know. And for being able to predict a solar eclipse, somebody is starving to death while you read this comment. We’ve got a long way to go so let’s not get too excited about predicting a solar eclipse. Bro

    • @garethwynn01
      @garethwynn01 2 роки тому +1

      You've totally misunderstood his comments about faith and science. Yes people used to observe and gather data and predict the movements of celestial bodies. That's empirical data. They also made up stories about them and imagined them as powerful gods and goddesses. Faith. Yes we've got a really long way to go. I've no idea how that relates to what Brian Cox said.

      @@garethwynn01 Those stories have tremendous sociologic and anthropologic significance which should not be disregarded. Also, we cannot totally discount that there could be a lot more in the universe than can be observed by our limited senses and processed thoroughly by us. These kinds of presentations disregard these aspects and reek of haughtiness. I myself am a man of science (a neurologist) and over the years have developed a sense of the importance of the other perspectives which I have mentioned above
