@GarageGear Went into HD last Sat to buy $20 worth of rattle can paint, walked out with $549 worth of Honda mower! Wasn't planning on spending $549 on the mower, but been waiting for a year or so trying to get one. This is in the Atl metro area and best I can tell, all the stores around here got an allotment of them.
FWIW to your viewers, Best info I have says HD were allotted 1000 units. When I bought mine, they had 915 'available to ship', today 3/27/24 they have 789 'available to ship'.
Spoke with Honda, mine has a green dot on the box. They said these units were fixed at the SC plant that used to assemble them. (cam and pressure release valve were replaced if the unit was in the range of serial numbers that were bad)

What I did with my old Murray 20" was when the first wheel broke was go to Ace and get steel rimmed, ball bearing wheels. They were slightly smaller in diameter than the original wheels so when I installed them into the holes on the frame I just lowered the bolts to the bottom holes which made the frame sit higher. Now, if I ever buy another Murray I'll just go ahead and put the steel rimmed wheels from my last mower on it when assembling the mower out of the box.

This comment will be all over the place 😂. Found your channel this past winter when my I had an issue with my brand new snow blower burning up the drive belt. Found out they put the pulley on backwards so it wouldn’t spin an burned the belt up. Binge watched all your snow blower guides to make the snow blower last many years to come! Got a free toro 22 inch recycler about 3 years ago when I bought my house always had issues with it starting an needed to spray starting fluid in the air filter to get it going. Did a 50$ tune up off Amazon (spark plug air filter an oil change) an a new blade today. First pull after it was all done today started up no issues. Deffinitly glad I found your channel an your guides! Let the free lawnmower live on!

I have a Honda GVC190 and it's awesome and super reliable. I have a little side hustle and it gets a beating, still excellent. Glad I watch this video because I've been thinking of the Toro 30" a lot, it will come in handy because my little side hustle is growing, but don't want to spend too much like $3K or more just yet for a bigger mower. You mentioned Hobda stopped making it, if they make a bigger one like the Toro 30" I would be the first one in line to buy. That being said the Toro 30" is out for now, thanks for sharing 😅. Going to see your other video on Toro maintenance.

I bought a 22 inch Toro self pace mower the first year they came out. Love the all wheel drive feature. At my age in the seventies, it is a game changer. In all these years, I replaced one wheel and the original cutting blade last year. The wheel was replaced under warrenty. Have never had an isuue with the mower deck clogging itself. I have had clogging at the discharge chute for the rear bagger, when the grass is wet. It needs a bigger opening in my opinion. I would love having the 30 incher, but it's three time the cost of the mower I have. As far as cleaning the mower with the hose attachment, a waste of time. Not worth a darn. Easier to tip the mower and clean it with a jet nozzle on my garden hose, and a 100 percent better job too. If I didn't have my Toro, I'd be paying someone to mow my yard. Don't doubt your opinion on the other mowers, but as for me, Toro all the way.

I’m in need of a new mower and I’m leaning towards a super recycler. I’ve watched all your videos on the 190cc model. Not sure in the differences between the others. Lowes has 2 163cc models. One is 799$ and the other 999$. The 190cc is 850$ but it’s not available online. Any tips and which you one you think is best?

I had the 190cc last year. Cut and ran great! Only major thing with the super recyclers is they have issues backing up. The rear wheels lock up. This is common on all super recycler models.

Love my old Honda Hydrostatic mower I bought 20+ years ago. I've only had 2 issues with it. Broke the pull start recoiler (easy and cheap to replace) and my son...he decided to do me a "favor" and mow my lawn for me. I was changing the oil in it had just drained it and went to take a call. Yep, he ran it without oil. After a lap around the yard, it seized. Fortunately I was able to get her running again. Took out the spark plug, put some 3 in 1 oil (or some sort of penetrating oil...been a while so don't remember which) into the cylinder and let it sit on its side for a couple of days. Then took a wrench to the bolt that holds the blade on the bottom and a 3 foot cheater bar and got it to turn. (this was all under the advice of a local honda shop/dealer). It's run great since and that's been at least 10 years ago. Starts first or second pull every time. I figured the rings would be shot or the cylinder scored but at this point, every year I get at this point is a bonus year!

Great video. I hope your right. One is on the way from HD.
Lowes changed their return policy. Apparently effective 4-1-2024, returns for many items must be unused. Otherwise it's a warranty issue.
I was reading the policy on their site, and was very confused so called customer service who is also not being very clear but said that's the new policy.
So I checked HD, and theirs is the same old return policy so ordered.
If it's true, Lowes is in big trouble... I did not get the extended warranty and will be sure to register the mfgr warranty. Thanks.

I had a conversation with a Home Depot employee about that this weekend, they basically were saying that if a recall is issued that they won't sell it to you at checkout as it should be pulled from inventory. So although the boxes look opened, they are as you said, repaired ones and you could check from the circle dotted sticker and by checking the serial number when you open the machine up with the online recall checker from honda.

Just picked up the Honda. I've been using a 80v battery mower for the past few years (Kobalt), 2 of my 4 batteries are already shot and the price to replace them is stupid high. I've also always been annoyed by the mower changing speeds based on what it thinks I need to cut, suction on the mower is also meh. Had to get what's left of one of the best gas mowers again before I can't anymore. I really do like many of the benefits of the battery powered mowers, but I'm ok returning to gas for the mower, still have a gas powered snow blower anyway. Will keep my battery-operated trimmers etc though.

Push mowers are now $400 for a lower grade mower than a 2010 $120 Murray.
It makes more sense to get a mower from a trash pile and buy a $14 knockoff carb from Amazon or eBay and fix one. Briggs carbs aren't even bolted on. Just slide on after removing the wind cord cover.
A 10 minute first time DIY job and you'll likely have a wonderful little mower for under $100 even if you buy a used non running one for scratch.
Tecumseh mowers have two bolts...but not much harder.
Typically if the cylinder has complession the problem is a gunked up carb. Rebuild $20...replace in 1/10th the time for $11 to $15.

To be fair about the Honda (model HRN216VKA - I own this mower, too), there was no camshaft issue. The issue was with the compression release mechanism. It was getting stuck in "run" mode, which means that it was harder to start on affected mowers. Honda replaced the mechanism on affected mowers.

Hi JB… here’s one for you. I have a 1992 Honda with the “plastic” deck. Bought it because I would go through mowers because of rust, hence the plastic deck Honda. This mower is INCREDIBLE,so I gave it to my son-in-law and purchased a new Honda from a commercial dealer on County Rd. This time,of course a PLASTIC deck AND KEY start… remember, I’m 30 years older now 😝. Yes,its warranty card was sent in,and I called Honda to make sure they got it… I have an hour meter on it, with 30 hours clocked. All starting by key,not one issue, my question is… does the camshaft problem only appear during PULL start?…. Keep up the great work… I also Crown proof where you do. Go Bills

I just bought the Honda HRN216VKA from Home Depot based on your recommendation and it really fitting what I was looking for in a new mower. (And just mowed my 2 lots with it, super happy!)
But I will say I filled out the registration and they expressly say that for warranty purposes you do not need to fill out the registration. But along your lines of thinking, if you do register, you will (presumably, if we're being generous) be notified of recalls or issues with the mower / motor. But, even more kudos to Honda. If you don't send in the card, you seemingly get the same warranty as someone that does. Which sounds good to me.

I agree with you recommending always using non ethanol fuel. The problem is all the pumps are now blender pumps multiple fuels one hose. According to the American Motorcyclist Association you have to pump a least four gallons of fuel to clear the line from what what pumped before to hope to get good fuel and that's if you can even find a station selling non ethanol.

    • @GarageGear

At these prices its better to just keep repairing an old mower when needed. I have a 2010 Bolens 21" side discharge with a 158cc Briggs engine that I mow my 1/2 acre lawn. Prices now days for a gas powered push mower is ridiculous. Last summer Rural King was running a sale on Pulsar 21" 200CC for $100.00. I bought it as I needed something to keep at my mother-in-law's so I didn't have to keep lugging mine over there and local used prices were about the same price. Reviews were very poor for the mower. But $100 new with warranty versus $100 used and no warranty, new won out. This has been one of the best running mowers I have ever own. It starts on the first or second pull every time so far and sips gas. Only issue with it is the flap on the back sometimes goes under the mower when pulling and makes it harder to pull. I may end up taking that off eventually.

The Toro Personal Pace mower has been the worst. I've always had issues with the drive train going out after the warranty expires. They also had under powered engines (Kohler) that were difficult to start. My neighbor works for Toro and verified this. My Dad taught me, buy the best you can afford. It cuts or, starts ok, the back wheel only fell of twice and the height adjusters are hard to navigate. What I hate the most is it leaves piles of clippings all over the lawn. When you make a 180 degree turn it leave a larger pile of clippings. I'm cutting normal height grass. I've had lots of different mowers in my 60+ years and this one is garbage. What makes the Honda better? I love Honda products but what makes one mower perform better than others? Does your Honda leave piles of clippings everywhere? Thanks for putting this video together. Started on one pull the other day after sitting for a few months. I still need to do a fuel line and spark plug replacement but hasn't had time. The Gator Blade mulching blade works pretty well on it (not quite as good as a Craftsman mower I had years ago, but well enough). I work at a Kubota dealership were I work on Honda power equipment. I will say the HRN mowers are nice but do have a couple of issues I have seen when working on them. #1 the valve cover, for some reason Honda put a thin layer of Honda bond from the factory so I see these valve covers leak badly sometimes not even a year old. #2 the drive belt system is not well protected so I see a lot of things get stuck up and around the transmission pulley and the self propelled quits working. #3 the transmission cable is thin and breaks often. Overall it’s a real nice mower with a couple of minor gripes from the mechanical side of things, They are great mowers I highly recommend them!

I bought the Timemaster a year ago before watching your videos. So far the pain on the deck started peeling off after a couple mows and grass clogs. Hoping the pulleys dont break this season because I do like the cut. Also it cannot pull it's own weight up a big hill

There is a huge recall on the Honda mower. Something lik400 thousand mowers recalled. If you register it Honda takes care of repair. Honda equipment is a fantastic product line!! Its a shame they stopped the gas power mower. I really enjoy your content JB, keep up the great stuff

Here is a tip I got from a man who works on mowers. He works in a power equipment dealer's shop, which is also regional warranty service center for at least one major brand. This guy works on LOTS of small engines, and here is his professional opinion: "I wouldn't have a G*d d*mn Kawasaki!" He went on to say that he likes Kohler, but Briggs and Stratton isn't bad. Finally, he added these words: "I ain't no d*mn fool about a Honda, either."
A friend/co-worker had a JD lawn tractor with a Kawasaki engine. It had fairly low hours (talking well under 200) when it tossed a rod. Another guy, an acquaintance of mine bought a Husqvarna with none other than a Kawasaki engine. The dealer himself told me about the guy calling to tell him he had a problem, so the dealer drove out to fix it. The machine had maybe 10 hours on it, so probably something minor...
Oil everywhere. The man was mowing his Grandmothers yard when there was a loud bang, oil and parts flew, and the mower stopped. The Kawasaki had done what they do best, and did it in spectacular fashion. : It had puked a rod through the side of the block in little pieces. Yeah, good stuff there...

In your videos where you say ethanol free gas do you mean use premium gas?

    • @GarageGear
      @GarageGear  3 місяці тому +1

Premium and ethanol free are two different things. I would look at the pump and it should say ethanol free. It might be a higher octane.

My small engine repair business is absolutely exploding right now. These manufacturers keep lowering the quality of their equipment and raising the price, people seem to have caught on and would rather fix their stuff than overpay for a lower quality machine. That Murray is NOT a $300 mower! If you have to buy a new mower, try to find something with a Honda engine while they are still around. If you can’t, the toros are pretty good, especially the super recyclers. I own a super recycler with a Honda engine, it is a great mower.

Does anyone know if the recalled units that HD is selling were actually repaired by Honda? My understanding is that the camshaft fix involved a pretty significant teardown, and at least in some cases, the Honda dealers were repairing their own stock (rather than the manufacturer). Makes me a little nervous buying a machine not knowing who fixed all of the HD inventory that was pulled from the shelf.

@@GarageGear Thanks for the reply! My question is whether the manufacturer itself repaired the machines with the green dots, or whether an authorized reseller would have done the work? The repair involves a complete teardown of the engine which seems risky depending on who did the work. Appreciate any insights you have. We may not know the answer in the end, but I am wondering if it is safer to buy a machine from a local authorized dealer. The local dealer near me says that their mechanics did the camshaft repair to the units they had in stock already. They did not send any units back to Honda for repair.

@@dave8115 hey Dave I believe these cam direct from the manufacture with the repair and labeled as such. If you trust your local mechanics I would go for it and buy it from them. 👍

My HD just recently restocked 16 of the Honda lawn mowers. Bought another one just to have. I originally own the hrn vya model and loved it now I own the vka model as well. Hawaii’s prices are ridiculous compared to where you are at. HD is the cheapest on the island at $649 vka model. I bought the vya model for $879 from a local Honda dealer last year. 30” timemaster at HD is $1949 so definitely higher here.

I’ve been using a 25 year old craftsman mower with a 6.75 HP Tecumseh engine until last weekend. It died after an hour and will not restart no matter what I try so it’s time for a new one unfortunately. I’m considering scooping up one of the remaining Honda 216 models or a Toro front wheel drive without that dumb personal pace system. I have an old Honda non self propelled as a back up and it’s great but I’m afraid to buy a new one now that they’re no longer making mowers…major bummer.

I had a Weedeater 22" purchased in 2002 with that engine that finally died last month. My father ran that mower on E15 (!) for the first 19 years of its life and never did any maintenance on it apart from changing the oil. Those engines were *tough*.
