  • Swamp White Oaks develop chlorosis (yellowing of leaves except along the veins due to inability to intake iron) when the soil is alkaline in pH and dry.
    Bur Oaks do not get chlorosis when the soil is high in pH or dry.
    Chinkapin Oaks thrive in high pH and dry soil.
    [Note-- in the Red Oak subfamily Shumard Oak (Quercus shumardii) and Hill's Oak (Quercus ellipsoidalis) are the two that can do well in high pH]
