❤@4:50(ish) Thx for talking about the valves not moving if you’re at top dead center. I got in a hurry and pulled out the distributor before setting to TDC(valve 1). I was having a mild freak out and I remembered your video! Life saver!❤
this video was priceless for me. Easy to understand, which I was having a hard time with a few text based write ups online. thank you so much for making this.
I LOVE THIS GUY. my new vacuum pot either struck the intake or the fuel pump. hang the notch. like he said, #2 exhaust valve indicates #1 tdc. line up 7 degrees mark. put the sending unit on a cam lob. and starting at the rotter , order1432. damn thing fired right up. now all i have to do is tweek with a light. boostedvw your a steely eyed missile man
loved your video. i always mess this up since it only once in a while i run into this problem , now i printed out that picture u posted in your video and i took notes . . now its off to hopefully get things right the first time :)
Thanks for the great video, just learned a fair bit I didn't know but was wondering about, I've got a Type 4 engine in my van with what I think is a beetle distributor. Cheers!
Hi there, yep just put a drip tray under them and prize the bails clip down with a screw driver, the RHS one can be a bit fiddly to juggle over the rocker arms and the body but they come off pretty easy. Pays to have a new gasket on hand for each side too.
Great job on video, thanks. I am having trouble finding information on how to inspect the distributor itself. For example, is the vacuum advance and centrifugal advance both working? My distributor is installed as you described, however it seems "stuck" internally providing almost no advance. I am not sure how to proceed short of a replacement.
The vac part is easy to test, if you suck on the hose the arm should move, if it doesn’t the diaphragm is bad. Seized centrifugal Weights is common, there’s a felt pad under the rotor that needs oiling each service, most get forgotten and seize up. You would probably need to pull the shaft out and soak it in something for a few days to free it up.
Thank you my brother, my Super beetle won't start. I had the distributor out, I think I went TDC on #3. Tomorrow is a new day, I will pull, rotate & replace. I will post the findings.
BoostedVW I messed with it to no avail. I let it go for a while, just this Monday I found that the gas lines were inverted. I corrected the mistake after much bitching & moaning. Got it started. Now I just have to figure out the lost of power situation. It has to be poor timing. Thanks for the input my friend.
BoostedVW Still no luck.....odd cough and splutter otherwise motor just cranks 😯 Timing's spot on....spark etc all good. New coil, points&condsr, plugs and HT leads. Sort oof wants to start buy eventually runs the batt flat. Going to tow her tomorrow and try that.
Hi, so i set the notches of puley on the center but it's off to my distributor so i move it about atleast an inch turn so just it'll line up to no. 1 cylinder on the distributor cap. is that gonna be a problem? and i also set it 1-4-3-2 clockwise the distributor wire.
I believe you just helped me fix my baja. Just out of curiosity.. Can you tell me why one of my distributers center shaft only has 2 lobes instead of being a rounded off square its shaped like a 🏈
Glad it helped, that distributor sounds like it’s from an air compressor, Vw made engines that were air compressors, cylinders 1&2 run the engine and 3&4 are setup as an air compressor so it only needs spark on 2
Why do they put the brass gear on the crank-shaft? Now I'm going to need to pull the whole thing apart again. Couldn't they make the distributor drive out of the softer metal so it would be easier to replace?
What would you recommend instead of an 009 for a buggy with all vacuum ports removed? The VW buggy specialist doing the restoration recommended the 009 over the 1970's era electronic advance it was built with. 1967 HO motor code, so single port.
It's fairly hard to remove the vac port on the carb for the distributor, most people just cap them off, is it still a stock 30pict carb? 009s work a little better with them than the later 1600 carbs but still a vac advance will perform much better
So I downloaded an owners manual for the Weber DFEV and did a thorough search and it is there, though the nipple has been removed and the hole tapped for a hex socket set screw. I assume since I have a lathe I could make a threaded nipple to change it over.
The 009 distributer is fine. I haven't touched a vw in 20 years but I always thought the 009 was an improvement as long as a person knows how to drive.
Yes it would have been easier to make the dist drive gear out of the softer material as its easily replaced. Its not very common that they get damaged though, what happened to yours?
if the distrubutor drive thing with the notch in it is 180 out is it the end of the world or can you just wire it accordingly... i guess well see.. all of my engines are like that its lookin like... and they did run... so i guess ill just go with it...
If your old wires are in good condition then you don’t have to replace them but if you’re not sure then might be a good idea to buy a new set. And nope you don’t need to drain the oil.
@@BoostedVW thanks.and I got the distributor in and points I've watched that video a few times but the bug is still running rough. I'm not sure where I went wrong.how do u figure out gap?
My super beetle does not run right atm.i timed it with the test light I have a 009 dis with h 30 31 carbi setup does not idle to get some sort of idle I have to close the volume control screw Any help would be grate
009s need to be timed with a timing gun so they max out at 30degrees. that aside having to close the mixture screw righht off is a sign its getting too much fuel, check the float level and also the jet sizes
I don't understand what difference it makes if the engine is TDC on cylinder #1. No matter which cylinder the engine is on the distributor will only fit one way. It's not like you can turn the distributor 90 degrees and put the distributor back in. But even if you turn it 360 degrees, you are right back where you started. The distributor only fits one way.
Philip Culver this is how people get into trouble not understanding how it works. Not meaning to offend but what you said is gibberish, the distributor can be installed any direction you put it in. You often see them fitted 90 degrees out which works as long as the plug leads are realigned to suit but the #1 notch is no longer for #1
"These distributors all have the #3 cylinder timing running 3 degrees less advanced than the other cylinders due to the fact that oil cooler is located inside the fan shroud, resulting in warmer air being directed to the left side cylinders. The #3 cylinder got the worst of it and overheated/detonated a little at normal advance."
J Man the early single port distributors were like that but not the later dual port SVDA and DVDA like these, they fixed that issue with the offset doghouse oil cooler
No it wasn't the distributor. I have to check the fuel pressure tomorrow, it's a FI super beetle. I drop the motor to replace a alternator and clutch, then It wouldn't start once I got the motor back in. I will follow the John Muir book as well as the downloaded manuals from the Samba site to get throughout this thing.

If the fuel pump is weak or blockage in the carb can cause that too
