  • "Nymph of the Luo River," a painting by Eastern Jin Dynasty (317-420) artist Gu Kaizhi, originally existed as a colored silk scroll. This lost masterpiece was a series of interconnected scenes, similar to a comic strip, portraying the poignant and pure love story of Cao Zhi and the Nymph of the Luo River. Now, only four Song Dynasty (960-1279) replicas survive, housed respectively in the Palace Museum in Beijing (two copies), the Liaoning Provincial Museum, and the Freer Gallery of Art in the United States. The scroll is divided into three sections, intricately and clearly depicting the romantic tale. The characters are arranged with a natural flow, transitioning, overlapping, and interchanging across different times and spaces. The landscapes and scenic elements are rendered with a distinctive spatial beauty. Among ancient Chinese paintings, "Nymph of the Luo River" is celebrated as the first to be adapted from a literary work.
