Free speech doesn't give you the ability to do whatever, wherever. It's ok for a conference to enforce some order in its own hall. What would not have been ok is if she then had them arrested and sent to prison - that's anti-free speech. It's a balancing act but overall I think the event was fine from a civil liberties point of view

Hallmark of a Truss speech... you can always sense the awkwardness of the crowd in trying to feel out when they are supposed to applaud. Lycett had it spot on about the dregs and the backwash.
It's like bad standup: you don't know when you're supposed to be laughing, where the jokes are, you can't entrain yourself to the rhythm of it. Public speaking is an art, and she's either really shit at it or really avant garde.
To me it looked like an audience with the same demeanor as those at a Polit Bureau address in the Kremlin, or in Pyongyang listening to that Jung Won bloke........all scared to death of doing the wrong thing lest the get sent to a Gulag or would end up swimming with the fishes.

When you think the applause for the security guards is for you, you're in trouble. And even worse, it was the biggest most enthusiastic applause of the speech.
A decent PM would have addressed them or acknowledge them and at least spoke to them - instead of taking the credit and applause of the security removing them.
