I grew up in France, and the DBZ game was a MUST HAVE. The anime was immensly popular at the time of release and we would spend hours playing it with friends. What a gem.
The Ranma 1/2 anime is really great. It takes a little bit to get into the sense of humor, but once you do it's hysterical. Some of the funniest things I've ever seen in my life come from that show.
Gundam Wing: Endless Duel is one of the best fighting games for that era IMO. Such a shame they didn't bother releasing it here.Good fighting system, graphics, music, and awesome super moves.
"Available for your home in 1995 only on Nintendo Ultra 64!" That phrase is forever etched in my brain till the day I die. Thanks to it being announced ever few minutes in our local pizza hangout back in the days. Great episode as always! Looking forward to more. "Hadoken!"
Oh yeah! You didn't work at Villa Napoli in the Westminster mall did you? lolz.. I wish Nintendo named the N64 "Ultra 64". Hadoken will be coming but who knows how soon.
xD No I was too young back then. Although I did work with my mom during the summer to earn money to buy myself the SNES. I remember when I told my brother that Nintendo was coming out with a new system (n64) and he asked me what's the name of it and told him Ultra 64. He pretty much laughed and said that it sounded like diesel fuel. But now for some sad news, the N64 is the only Nintendo console I skipped. I went straight for the PSX. And yes I prefer and still call it PSX instead of PS1 :p
***** Well what did I do? I'm not the one who gave these consoles their names. Sony did. If it's anyone's fault, you gotta put the blame on them. Just like with Microsoft and Xbox 1/One.
***** I actually called it the PSX for a long time myself. Then the PS2 came out and Sony renamed the smaller redesigned unit the PSone and then I just fallowed suit.
Great episode! Like many people said, Gundam W Endless Duel is an outstanding game for the SFami. Battle Tycoon: Flash Hiders SFX is a good game with nice upgrade mechanics between combats, and Fighter's History: Mizoguchi Kiki Ippatsu the best SFII clone for the system. The good YuYu Hakusho fighter isn't the SNES one, it is Yuu Yuu Hakusho: Makyo Toitsusen for Genesis/MegaDrive, developed by Treasure. It was ahead of it's time with no doubt.
One odd thing I thought back in the day when TMNT: Tournament Fighters was released was why they never had Usagi Yojimbo in the game, he made perfect sense for a fighting game.
I've got a real soft spot for Fighting Masters on the Megadrive, it was the one-on-one fighting game that kept me tide over until Street Fighter 2 eventually got a Megadrive release (and in fact Fatal Fury came out before then, so I jumped ship to that for awhile before SFII). And in answer to your question Joe, yes the final boss had his own unique stage (and stage music) and was waaaay harder to beat than the regular selectable characters.
Some fighters I thought of that didn't get covered were: Time Killers (arcade port to Genesis) Multiplatform (SNES and Genesis) like Justice League Task Force, Primal Rage (arcade port) and Weaponlord. There were also Neo Geo ports to 16-bit like Art of Fighting, Fatal Fury, King of the Monsters, Samurai Shodown and World Heroes.
I LOVED Eternal Champions. Those stage specific kills were just so damn cool. I actually thought that of all the fighters that have come and gone, Eternal Champions had the quality to last with the big guys of the genre like Street Fighter, Tekken and Mortal Kombat. I was wrong. Still a cool ass game though.
Maybe you weren't wrong. Sega killed the franchise cause they thought it would hinder Virtua Fighter's success in the west. So we'll never know how successful it'd become.
Great episode! When your opening segment mentioned fighting games other than Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat, I half-expected a glut of Neo Geo titles. But true to form, you guys delivered some obscure and less-covered games instead of the same-old, same-old. Well done!
Great non-SF/MK fighting games of the era that were not mentioned: - Games from the Samurai Shodown/Spirits series (SS 1 and 2 are still among the best old-school 2D fighters in existence) - Games from the King of the Fighters series (KOF98 is said to be among the best) - Fatal Fury 2 Eternal Champions & Killer Instinct are overrated.
I love you guys. I really appreciate the perspective you offer. It feels like I'm listening to two of my buddies talk about my favorite games. Keep on!
If it hasn't been done yet, I'd still love to see an all street fighter episode. I understand, given the amount of games, it would be longer than 25 minutes, but it would be a really good episode. Especially if you go over the differences in each of the revisions and stuff. Especially some of the japan-exclusive things like Super Street Fighter 2 X or whatever it's called. Just sayin, that'd be an amazing episode. Not that this one's bad, this was a really good one too. Most of the stuff I've seen by you guys have been good so far.
Battle Master was one of the first good SFII clones to appear on the Super Famicom. Power Instinct and Fighter's History were also pretty good; none too original, but solid one-on-one fighters.
I appreciate the episode as usual, but a short disclaimer beforehand, such as, "We have no idea how to play fighting games," probably would have added quite a bit to the episode. If you don't know how to play fighters efficiently, many games in the genre will seem or appear much less appealing than they really are (i.e., Eternal Champions CD.. Which apparently revolves around holding back then forward and A, B, C, or X, Y, Z.. which is exactly like how several characters operate in the Street Fighter series). Although, I have to admit, that ending (post-credits) was clever, HAHA! Despite your opinions, nice work as always, guys.
Who cares if you suck at the games? Judging by the same jump kicks over and over in your footage, it's clear you guys aren't really into fighting games. That's fine. It's more about understanding the genre as a whole and basing your opinions off of that (for instance, being involved in the competitive scene, which is probably one of the only things keeping the genre relevant today). Making some sort of disclaimer saying, "Hey, we aren't really THAT into fighting games.. so you may still want to give these games a try, depending on your skill level and/or fighting game aptitude," could go a long way in making the more serious players stumbling across your videos have a better perspective on where you are coming from, that's all. :)
Austin Mackert Well I don't think anyone is gonna think we are competitively into fighting games. I kept saying I suck at it so I think they'll get it. And yes, Eternal Champions does have moves that you pull off by pressing 3 buttons at the same time and holding back for a time instead of the usual semi-circle d-pad movements and whatnot. Granted I think it's Guile who also has a hold back move or two (and maybe Honda?) but I don't usually play as him/them.
Why nothing by SNK? I mean .. you even used a king of fighters song in the end... I don't know, maybe is because I'm not american but I feel that in the arcade during the 16 bit era Fatal fury, art of fighting and the king of fighters were way more relevant than Mortal Kombat. It's strange to see killer instinct, eternal champions and clay fighters but no horrible port of fatal fury special
Wow! Fighting Masters! I remember playing a lot of that while I was waiting for Street Fighter to release on my mega drive. I definitely like your episodes where you cover all the 'obscure' games. Growing up in Asia, I played quite a few of the games you guys talk about and it really brings me back. Plus, any coverage on little known games is always good!
That was a pretty cool episode, brought back a lot of memories. There's TONNES of extra unlockable characters in Eternal Champions challenge from the darkside, I think there's about 10-12 unlockables ranging in quality from 'whoa sweet' to 'really?'
Dave, I advise you watch Ranma 1/2, I love that anime and I think it's right up your alley. If you watch the first episode it's a perfect summary of what to expect from that series so you can instantly get a feel on whether you'll like it or not.
David White It's available on youtube, though the english voice acting is pretty terrible, sadly. I would go with a subtitled japanese version, if that's your thing. If not, I guess the english version would do ;) Ranma 1/2 - Season 1, Episode 1: English Subbed (HQ) Ranma 1 2 Episode 1 English Dubbed
Dave, just change the controls in Ranma using the Options. Everything is customizable, and I always change "Up" to "Jump." Thanks for another great episode!
anonamatron It's called anticipation!!!!... and yeah it can take like 10 episodes to stop the inner talk and flashbacks and memories and shit and stop da beeatinnnnn' XD
gingersleep No, it was just two guys on opposite sides of a valley or something, and all the various characters chimed in with their opinions about who was going to win the fight.... I saw zero fighting. The show ended after absolutely nothing happened. I couldn't tell you which episode it was, and perhaps that's not a typical episode, but I certainly saw it... It's possible it wasn't Z... I think they showed regular Dragon Ball at the time too. I think that was just like... Goku was a kid and had a monkey tail or something, and nothing really happened? I think my gruntfest episode was with an adult Goku.... fuck if I know.
Game Sack has become my fave UA-cam "show". Thanks for the good tomes Joe n Dave. Discovered lots of great tunes through you as well - maybe an ep devoted to (your fave 16bit) music?
David White yeah UA-cam are clamping down aren't they? If you guys had the inclination to compile a playlist of other people's vids of your fave tunes and put it on your channel, I would be all over it! Sure I wouldn't be the only one. Might be a way to avoid censorship. Either way keep up the good work!
Great vid. I owe you guys a big thanks for the left in arcade episode. I had been looking for Cabal on NES but didn't remember the name of the game. Just picked it up :)
For reals. Im an American who got my hands on this game in 1994 and it irks me that they said you cant do much from far away. Every character has 3 energy based attacks, one or two of which can hit from far range. Also the the two supers everyone has. Ive only learned about Game Sack this month and I love their channel but some things they just dont know what they are talking about. As a fighting game fan since SF2, DBZ SB2 was ahead of its time.
I really enjoyed this episode. Other fighting games I liked that weren't mentioned were Gundam Wing, Yu Yu Hakusho, Hyper Dimention and Fatal Fury. I did want to mention that in Super Butoden 2 you CAN dash using L or R buttons
David White i recommend u watch it i don't know how u would react to the fact that if combine all the series it will be like 400+ episode but the its epic and if u just arent intrested in anime not even 0.1% than dragon ball(the series before DBZ) and dragon ball z might change your mind and i also recommend DBZ:Hyper Dimension for snes its pretty unique
When I saw the title of this episode, I was hoping to see a game called Weaponlord covered. It was a late-era 16-bit fighter. It looks good and seems to have positive reviews. I haven't gotten around to trying it yet so I was hoping to hear what you thought, but it didn't make it into the episode. Perhaps it's something to consider in the future. I'll have to try it eventually. That doesn't detract from the episode at all. Another fun and interesting episode. Thank you.
YOU NEED TO PLAY Dragonball Z Hyper Dimension for the super Famicom.... The graphics rival Playstatoin.... Seriously This game back in the late 90's made me think that the super nintendo could never be rivaled....
WarriorKiyo Hyper Dimension was a lot of fun, mostly because it played more like a SF clone than the other DBZ games with their own rules. By making it more like Street Fighter, it worked a lot better.
Wow... Talk about biased, uninformed and pitiful. How about actually at least read Wikipedia about a certain game/anime/series? DBZ Super Butoden 2 not having a "dash" button? The top L & R buttons are used to "dash" forward or backward since the first game of this series appeared. The action is not "solid" because you don't know how to play it. You can dash, throw a punch and combo it into a meteo smash even if your oponent blocks... But you sure didn't care to research enough before your critic of these and of many other games which makes all you say misleading and inaccurate.
I love Killer Instinct. And I loved Clayfighter when I was younger but I replayed it recently and the frame rate seemed really poor. But the audio for Clayfighter was technically impressive (I found the music catchy but can definitely empathize if you didn’t like it). Thanks for bringing back the great memories!!
Thanks for this episode! I grew up rather poor and with an over protective mother so I never got many chances to play fighting games (I'm 30 so I grew up in the time that SF2 and Mortal combat came out in my time). I've always heard about Strip Fighter in other stuff on UA-cam. Thanks for showing it. It's worse than I thought lol. I got to play the arcade version of Killer Instinct a few times. I really sucked at it, but it had some great character designs. When the PS1 came out I was finally able to start playing more violent games. One of the first games I rented was Tekken. I didn't have a memory card at the time so I spent hours unlocking the characters so my friend could come over and play it with me. Good times. As an aside, my dad hated playing most games with me. Somehow he would always beat me in the few times I got to play fighting games with him even though he was just button mashing. Somehow I was able to rent SF II Championship Edition a few times. Guess Mom was ok with it after I never turned out to want to start fights with people. I've played all sorts of violent games and am still non confrontational. Eat that "video games make people violent" people!
Good story. I agree it's not video games that make people violent. It's somewhere else in their brains that isn't making a connection between real and fantasy.
I still think your video on the Sharp 68000 is pretty awesome, one of those systems that slipped under the radar back in the day's, don't know how, but then again there PC games that I enjoyed that know one else did, Budokan being one of them; that segment brought back memories of my Tandy 1000.
Yancade hand built games machines Had to play it with a keyboard, tedious, but it's graphics were too awesome to not play it anyway, not a game for button mashers.
awww Fighting Masters back when i was child i used to play it everyday with my brother. Especially Phoenix really reminded me of that Phoenix character from Golden Axe III. So he is maybe most fond remembered character to me.
Eternal Champions on the Sega CD was an awesome remake that had nearly 30 characters! (mostly hidden, of course). Controls, balance, graphics, story, everything was improved. It also has cool FMV intros for every character so you know their back story. The cartridge version pales in comparison. I loved playing it for months & I don't recall the CPU cheating. The Cinekills are amazingly tough to do though. Also, Beast Wrestler was a unique fighting game. Monsters fight in a ring in a tournament. After a while, you get to combine your monster's genes with a defeated enemy's genes to create a mixed monster. (Only a few combinations possible though.)
I can't believe how rare and collectible MUSHA has become. I own a copy because I read about it in Mega Play and bought it back when it was a new release. At the time, no one else seemed to even notice it, but it was easily my favorite Genesis game. Years later, imagine my surprise to see this game I thought was cool 20+ years ago to have become one of the most sought after games on the system.
Nice to see Super Botouden 2 on this list. That piano-sounding track always reminded me of the bad guy in cartoons that would tie the damsel to the railroad tracks. Not quite fighting music or DBZ music.
I can remember buying Eternal Champions after renting SF2 and Mortal Kombat. At that time I thought it was the better game. Challenge from The Dark Side was the first game I can remember waiting and waiting for as it kept getting delayed. I bought my copy as soon as it came out though and played it till 6am the next day with my GF trying to unlock all the characters. I think there are around 22 characters in the game including all the hidden ones. Along with the Overkills and Cinekills there are also Vendetta's and Sudden Deaths. Absolutely loved this game. I will own it again someday.
I grew up in France, and the DBZ game was a MUST HAVE. The anime was immensly popular at the time of release and we would spend hours playing it with friends. What a gem.
Dave, in the Ramna 1/2 game, in the options menu, you can change the controls to have Up on the D-pad as jump.
Woah
Ebay must prepare for the influx of Strip Fighter 2 sales.
I can't believe you were able to beat Strip Fight 2 with only one hand.
They look like the "snu snu" Amazons from Futurerama.
The Ranma 1/2 anime is really great. It takes a little bit to get into the sense of humor, but once you do it's hysterical. Some of the funniest things I've ever seen in my life come from that show.
I just wanted to mention that in Ranma 1/2 you can map jump to UP in the options menu.
I really enjoyed Eternal Champions. The story behind each charactor was pretty tragic and the time traveling aspect thing was pretty cool
This really has become my favourite channel now. Great job guys
This episode features the multi-platinum, Grammy award winning single "I Got M.U.S.H.A."
Gundam Wing: Endless Duel is one of the best fighting games for that era IMO. Such a shame they didn't bother releasing it here.Good fighting system, graphics, music, and awesome super moves.
and yuyu hakusho
Yeah, I was gonna recommend Endless Duel...
Though I sometimes like to call it "Gundam Wing: Endless Combo"
PLEASE MAKE "The Other 16-bit Fighting Games II" AND INCLUDE FIGHTERS HISTORY!! THANK AND THUMBS UP
"Available for your home in 1995 only on Nintendo Ultra 64!" That phrase is forever etched in my brain till the day I die.

I can't believe they didn't include Samurai Shodown, the genesis version is especially awesome.
No , the snes version is better , with Earthquake, arcade moves and much better sound
@@pliniomsann arcade is best.
Hey, you guys "forgot" a lot of games!! You're supposed to cover everything in existence within a half hour, don't you know that!?!?
Shorter, to-the-point reviews for each one, omit the cringe jokes and attempts at humor, there is no time limit on videos
@Metal-Gear-Moogle so take all the life out of the show basically? Move on.
Hey Joe I recommend Yu Yu Hakusho Makyo Toitsusen for the Genesis. It's made by Treasure and has really great gameplay.

LOL at Joe's 1990 mullet!
Didn't know you guys were here in Denver. Thanks for representing us and for your commitment to preserving gaming of a bygone era.
Haahaa love the retro clip of teenage Joe!
always nice to see a brand new game sack episode after a hard days work
Thank you Guys for a great show.I love the comedy ending.
Game Sack should win the internet! Always a great show!
You can go into the options of Ranma 1/2 and set up for jump, but it should have been jump to begin with after all.
One odd thing I thought back in the day when TMNT: Tournament Fighters was released was why they never had Usagi Yojimbo in the game, he made perfect sense for a fighting game.
Stan Sakai his creator probably only signed a limited use license with him for TMNT
Eternal champions deserve a new version, when you think Sega will release a 2D fighting game based on Shining force characters U_U
Time Killers (arcade port to Genesis)
Multiplatform (SNES and Genesis) like Justice League Task Force, Primal Rage (arcade port) and Weaponlord.
There were also Neo Geo ports to 16-bit like Art of Fighting, Fatal Fury, King of the Monsters, Samurai Shodown and World Heroes.
I liked this, people need to make longer and more descriptive videos like this.
I LOVED Eternal Champions. Those stage specific kills were just so damn cool. All SF games are essentially the same...
Cover one, cover them all.
I used to adore Killer Instinct. I remember saving up pocket money for months to get it, and it came with the CD soundtrack. Awesome!
Well it looks like Stripfighter 2 became my all time favorite game.
It's not worth it.
Battle Master was one of the first good SFII clones to appear on the Super Famicom. Power Instinct and Fighter's History were also pretty good; none too original, but solid one-on-one fighters.
I'm just glad you guys didn't show us Shaq Fu...
I like this style! Tons of games in 20 minutes.
Samurai Showdown, Fatal Fury 2, World Heroes, Killer Instinct and Weaponlord were all good "other" 16 bit fighters.
weaponlord was ahead of its time
just because i like your show so much I won't skip the ad this time or even use ad blocker on your channel again. GAME SACK RULES
Damn good episode guys!
Thanks Eric!
I was wondering what to watch this sunday morning, and I thought "hmm, there should be a Game Sack episode soon", and... BOOM!
Thank you guys!
No Weaponlord? That was a fun SNES game, though a bit sluggish at times. And yes, there is also a Genesis port.
@VaporCheeks yes
Haha I remember playing TMNT Tournament Fighters!
Great episode, once again!
I appreciate the episode as usual, but a short disclaimer beforehand, such as, "We have no idea how to play fighting games," probably would have added quite a bit to the episode. SNK fighters were way more popular in areas outside United States, maybe because they went super nuts for MK.
technically, snk games were 24bit though. a clearly visible difference, yes, the old kofs fe look way better than 16 bit games.
Neo Geo and SNK games were not in any way 24bit. Neo Geo was 16-bit machine.
it's main CPU Motorola 68k was basically 16bit but the Neo Geo had a 24bit Fujitsu video processor, so there is some truth to it.
Wow! Fighting Masters! I remember playing a lot of that while I was waiting for Street Fighter to release on my mega drive.

Brutal: Paws of Fury. Oh god, its horrendous.
There are a ton of hidden characters in eternal champions CD. That and the extra main characters and fatalities make the CD version the absolute best.

Great vid. I owe you guys a big thanks for the left in arcade episode. I had been looking for Cabal on NES but didn't remember the name of the game. Just picked it up :)
but david, you must have the spirit of the samurai to handle surprises hahahaha budokan is going to teach you that hahaaha
i always watch to the end.. those skits are gold :)
really??? not even once you pressed L or R on the DBZ game to notice the dash????
The show is good but sometimes they don't know what they are talking about.
IgnisPerpetuumKx These guys can't play fighting games for shit...
Fighting games are not their specialty I'll say that. They know way more about other genres.
I really enjoyed this episode. Other fighting games I liked that weren't mentioned were Gundam Wing, Yu Yu Hakusho, Hyper Dimention and Fatal Fury. I did want to mention that in Super Butoden 2 you CAN dash using L or R buttons
What, David? You haven't watched Dragon Ball? :P
:(
David White i recommend u watch it i don't know how u would react to the fact that if combine all the series it will be like 400+ episode but the its epic and if u just arent intrested in anime not even 0.1% than dragon ball(the series before DBZ) and dragon ball z might change your mind and i also recommend DBZ:Hyper Dimension for snes its pretty unique
Wow one episode off 100!
Really wish I started watching Game Sack when it first started!
Haven't watched DBZ?!!! you lost the half of your life!
And btw, where's DBZ Hyper Dimension?
When I saw the title of this episode, I was hoping to see a game called Weaponlord covered. It was a late-era 16-bit fighter. It looks good and seems to have positive reviews. I haven't gotten around to trying it yet so I was hoping to hear what you thought, but it didn't make it into the episode. Perhaps it's something to consider in the future. I'll have to try it eventually. That doesn't detract from the episode at all. Another fun and interesting episode. Thank you.
Damn, This is the 2nd video today I've seen with no dislikes!
What is it today, national don't-be-an-asshole day?
Lol. Yeah right, just give it time. Somebody is bound to give it the thumbs down. I like the idea though of a "Nat'l don't be an A hole day."
Sure, but that isn't very inclusive to Democrats though. I'm all for a National Don't be an Asshole day.
This series reminds me of the old Classic Game Room. Subscribed!
Awesome, thanks!
YOU NEED TO PLAY Dragonball Z Hyper Dimension for the super Famicom.... The graphics rival Playstatoin.... Seriously This game back in the late 90's made me think that the super nintendo could never be rivaled....
WarriorKiyo Yeah, it's by FAR the best 16-bit Dragon Ball fighter - they should have played/reviewed that one.
WarriorKiyo Hyper Dimension was a lot of fun, mostly because it played more like a SF clone than the other DBZ games with their own rules. By making it more like Street Fighter, it worked a lot better.
Best gaming channel on youtube!
Nah, it's just a shitty game. Get over it.
I love Killer Instinct. And I loved Clayfighter when I was younger but I replayed it recently and the frame rate seemed really poor. But the audio for Clayfighter was technically impressive (I found the music catchy but can definitely empathize if you didn’t like it). Thanks for bringing back the great memories!!
sunday morning wake and bake, with an episode of game sack. epic. you guys rock :)
Thanks! Are you baking cookies? LOLOLOL
This made my day! Thanks Dave :D
Looking forward to episode 100!!!!!!! great show. I wish you a 100 more.
Keep up the good work guys, love your work!
If you have another edition of this, Primal Rage, Weaponlord and Samurai Shodown would be worth mentioning.
Ha i remember seeing a tandy running Budokan and as a martial arts kid i wanted it :)
Yancade hand built games machines Had to play it with a keyboard, tedious, but it's graphics were too awesome to not play it anyway, not a game for button mashers.
Some SNES fighters I remember: Power Instinct, Power Moves (also on Genesis as Deadly Moves), Fighter's History, Gundam W: Endless Duel
awww Fighting Masters back when i was child i used to play it everyday with my brother. Especially Phoenix really reminded me of that Phoenix character from Golden Axe III. So he is maybe most fond remembered character to me.
Great episode...Nice one fellas!
Really had enjoyment with trutles too. It was a strong fighter.
I've had 'I've got musha, gonna play me some musha' stuck in my head all day. Goddamnit dave!
Oh god thats some ingenious trolling at the end, switching boards
thank you sir for getting another piece of my childhood memories on fighting masters :')
You guys are RADICAL!
Great video!!! 100% quality as always!
Thank you sir!
I played so much World Heroes 2 on SNES. It's like Street Fighter II Champion, but with Mudman and a mode with obstacles and a seesaw life bar.
I already thought you guys were awesome but you two rock so hard for doing this episode!
Hey Thanks! What was your favorite game that we covered?
I played a LOT of Eternal Champions CD...loved that game. TMNT Tournament Fighters was a close second.
strip fighter looks AWESOME!!!! Great episode guys I would love to see a "other 32 bit fighting games" episode
This Sunday just got better!
I was hoping you guys were going to cover the Clay Fighters on the N64 since you brought of the first one. Maybe one day!
Travis Welton same. I remember playing with the senator and the chicken character. Still haven't seen all the endings.
