love the review of a very neat little barebones system. Please do Hostile next, great little hard sci-fi hack of Cepheus. Another note : Technically, "Cepheus" would be pronounced "Kephius" or "Keephius" since it's a name from Greek (like Cassandra is pronounced Kassandra not Sassandra). But that's just my pedantic reasoning.. Hope you are getting lots of gaming in!
Thanks, and yes Hostile is marvellous! Pronunciation... Cepheus is derived from Ancient Greek Κηφεύς (Kēpheús), which has a hard 'K', however Cepheus itself is pronounced with a soft C /ˈsiːfi.əs/, /ˈsiːfjuːs/ - try this site (amongst a fair few): www.howtopronounce.com/cepheus (But hey, if you can give me some alternate sources - I'm open to the hard K!)
Just found this now. Nice run through. I've been interested in Cepheus based on being interested in Traveller, based on being interested in Stars Without Number. One interesting idea Stars Without Number brings to ship combat is the the concept of taking a 'ship calamity' (i forgot the actual term). But it is a way to reject damage in place of rolling on a ship system damage table. This gives the other characters something to do. Players may need to ask their med officer/rockstar/not-normally-involved-in-space-combat character to have to go down to engineering and try to fix a short before the core melts.
Very nice video. I kept wanting to read the table or chart you were showing off, and it just was not possible. A suggestion, is make the rules on the left twice as wide, (so you and the Cepheus logo would take less room). Or alternately, when you are showing something interesting, in your editor zoom in so it takes the full screen for a couple minutes. Warm regards, Rick.
Can't wait to get this to the table, new to traveler, this is going to be epic!! Also I gotta just say caeser, kaiser, czar.all acceptable. And circe Kirk church.so.its a big universe.probably a little different on every world.drop the haters off somewhere cold.
They're giving the editable DOCX away FREE as pay as you want. If you want to make your WH40k/Star Wars/Homebrew careers and items, Now's your chance. Basically, that's what I'll be doing next week.
It's awesome I've been working on Psionic options backgrounds and ideas. Come up with Mind Burn that inflicts a penalty Brought in Psi shields that only psions can penetrate. That's how they defend themselves.
I pronounce "cepheus" the same way you do, and I'm American. Also pretty sure I've heard at least one British guy pronounce it the other way. Must be one of those words people pronounce differently depending on how they first heard it from someone else. Same for many Greek and Latin words we don't normally hear in daily conversation; it probably comes down to how an individual heard it via documentary or teacher early on. Anyway, thanks for the vid, and putting up with my analytical droning!
Quite so, I am sure you are right, it isn't obvious from the word. I may not have been entirely serious. ;-) Thakns for your comment, and hope you enjoy the game.
Cepheus was the name of an ancient Greek King and is a constellation. There is no "American" pronunciation. In English it is pronounced see-fee-us. Like Circe is pronounced surs in English. Regardless of country.
Okay, I downloaded the free .DOCX version and went through it. EASILY the best Traveller version created. I've been playing since the 70's. Marking up now for house rules. MTU has more small craft and private ships than allowed for in these and other Trav rule sets. Thus changes to base cost of hull & drives.
i like this! though i do think there is something to be said for specialization, maybe not super narrow to “refrigerators” but maybe like 3 general subcategories. for example. a naval man in a age of sails planet might have proficiency with one handed swords and small arms and anything likely for a sailor to use, but not full on rifles or heavy weapons.
I've been searching for a sci-fi game for ages and this seems to be perfect. I'm a sci-fi noob and have only heard of Traveller by name. I've got the pdf and print copy and it gets better every time I read it. You said about using a generator and inputting it to the traveller map which really appeals to me but i can't find any decent information on this. If you do make your sector that would be a fantastic video for us noobs. Creating, editing and uploading to traveller map.
@@GrahamSpearing that's fantastic. I've a feeling there are a bunch of noobs like me that would love it. I found Cepheus deluxe before I found this video and as soon as I started reading knew I'd be running it. This video filled in a load of blanks so thank you. Also, now I have a name for the tingles!
Accepting the uncertainty of 'Events', character generation is a much more player controlled process in Cepheus Deluxe, and I'm personally fine with that.
It's the only change that I'm not sure if better. Every single other change is awesome, but I miss the aspect of "my character wanted to be a corporate guy, but he failed"
🤣🤣 No. It's based on the SRD. The two games are QUITE different. BOTH are based on CT however. I take it you are not a Trav player of any real experience.
@@protonneutron9046 I have played Traveller since 1982. I have even played with Marc. Nice try. They are VERY loosely based on Classic Traveller. I take you spoke out of your nether regions.

Superb video! I purchased Cepheus Deluxe immediately after watching it.

I'm so looking forward to playing this system with Hostile!
At 2 minutes and 32 seconds I was pausing you and over on Drivethrurpg ordering the print on demand version!

thanks. Got it and am putting in my few house rules. Fewest of any edition so far.
It is a great system for getting players into Traveller for sure

Sold. Booting up my laptop and heading to Drivethru right now. Thanks for a great review!

Purchased from your recommendation. 😏

No new vehicle design rules yet example of new vehicles with different rules?
What do you think about the removal of survival roles and the such?

@@GrahamSpearing I purchased the pdf from DriveThru but haven’t played a game yet. I am reserving my judgement. Thanks for your review.

That being said this system is not bad.
You got the tingles for D&D4E?!??!!?
TINGLE! :-)
The art in the book isn't half-bad... the other half of the art? That's _really_ bad.
Nope disagree. Deluxe goes too far down the over simplification route. Introduces cringe worthy 5 ed D&D concepts as well.
'F Off' indeed! 😄
cepheus is a DIRECT rip off of Mongoose Traveller 1st edition.
