I love Cepheus. The author lives here in Austin, and I get to roll dice with him- not frequently enough, but he's Good People.

Fantastic review that cleared my confusion regarding what Cepheus is and the difference between the various versions. Getting into solo play after a gap of 30 years in playing RPGs and this was the perfect review for me - after watching this I now have a plan for how to explore the universe! Thank you so much.

I recently picked up Sword of Cepheus, I've always wanted to try a grittier fantasy system and this seems perfect! Keep up the wonderful content

i have started running a SoC game, It is OK. I prefer Barbarians of Lemuria for 2d6 Sword and Sorcery.

Great video. I am a long time Traveller player and I am about to dive into Cepheus myself. I am planning a Traveller campaign that spans several eras of OTU history and I am considering shifting rule sets based on game style for each era. Glad to hear the shout out to the C&C White Box. I have several shelves of C&C stuff and that original box set is still my go to for quick games.

C&C is the best of the Dungeons and Dragons 're-imagings'. Very clear and a great system.
i like the idea of using different rules sets for different eras!

Barbaric! Is also a great little game. A boiled down Sword of Cepheus, also by Stellagama. Has a more Conan feel than SoC. Easy to run and a heap o' fun.

side note, I own some very old issues of Dungeon magazine with Alice Andre Norton's mailing label. Issues 1 and 6 IIRC

Great review, thanks! I have been running a Star Without Numbers game for like 45 sessions now, might try this later hopefully. SWN is cool but the classes and hitpoint increases with leveling are starting to piss me off, I want weaker PCs dammit!

Aaah. Yep, it will have to be a "Traveller" varient like Cepheus, then! Best tool for the job!

How much would it mess up the gams scale/math if PCs only got +1 HP per level up?

Nice review. I played around a bit with Barbaric!(also available as ¡Bárbaro! en español) which are Sword of Cepheus lite games and enjoyed them. I am also liking some of the settings the Zozer games is putting out for Cepheus.

Yes, there's some interesting settings coming out.
I'll have to check out 'Barbaric'!

If I recall correctly, the exact description of the weapon Traveller calls a "Blade" is taken from E.C. Tubb's Dumarest novels.
It's worth remembering that classic Traveller (1977 and 1981 editions) and MegaTraveller are now the only editions in which melee weapons remain effective, to a degree, against even the most heavily armored troops. That encourages a very specific sort of SF gaming.

'Blades' star in Norton's Free Traders novels and Mercenary novels as well. They were never amazing weapons under the Traveller rules due to the wargamer obsession that 'bigger is better', but it was fun to see them there!

If you're seriously considering fighting troops in battle dress with an oversized knife you really need to learn when to surrender.

@@richmcgee434 I was discussing how the rules worked, and what sort of setting those rules then imply. I didn't say it was an ideal method, only one that does, in fact, work when using those particular rules. It's why Marines in CT and MT were given an emphasis on Cutlass skill (Large Blade in MT), and why none of the editions since do so.

Nice vid! Going to use this to run a Rimworld cowboys on motorbikes, rams ranch is under siege game given it's light enough to thrown on Savage Worlds style vehicles rules ontop

I've been on the fence about this since it came out. After watching this I think I'll probably end up getting it one day.

How do you think this may work with Traveller 2e?

    • @LaceandSteelchannel
      @LaceandSteelchannel  2 місяці тому

They're largely compatable. Cepheus is more generalised and not tied to the specific Traveller universe. It also offers some extra bells and whistles

@@LaceandSteelchannelThanks. Have you seen anything that adds a bit of Mothership or Hostile RPG feel to Traveller?
