You know I'm 59 stinkin' years old and I happened to stumble across this. Until now I was totally clueless that there were Amos n Andy cartoons.

I'm 33 and for some reason I had a video tape of this show as a kid. I remember watching it when I had nothing better to do :D the animation was fantastic for those times.

I wasn't aware 'Speedy Gonzales' was censored because of 'racial stereotypes' - good gosh! how absurd! I remember those cartoons from my childhood which, of course, were nothing but innocent fun. Incidentally, thanks for uploading these - as well as your comments. They speak to my perspective, also.

This is fun, entertaining cartoon when taken into context. That was the appeal of the “Amos And Andy” radio show, and later, the early television series portrayed by black comedy actors. Listeners liked the show because of the comedic situations and good scriptwriting on the program. Its appeal transcended the stereotypes depicted on the program.

It's pretty rare to see a cartoon from this period that's so story and dialogue driven. I'm surprised there weren't more radio series adapted this way. A weekly animated serial version of something like The Shadow probably would have been tremendously popular. It's strange that the idea of a story-driven animated series is such a young concept.

"story and dialogue driven" PROBABLY DUE TO TO THE DIRECT INVOLVEMENT OF THE
CREATORS OF THE CHARACTERS, RADIO SHOW & THEIR PREDECESSORS SAM 'N' HENRY

Project it, and film it with a decent digital. Then post that. You may have to shoot 2 or 3 parts and put them together. Quicktime pro would make it very easy.

I wonder why they called it Amos n Andy. Amos was rarely a large part of the story, but Kingfish always was. Maybe Amos had larger parts on the early radio shows? I think it should have been Andy n Kingfish.

    • @mr.3camerasman59
      @mr.3camerasman59 9 років тому +3

misharyutubbee Supposedly the creators of the show needed a name, and while in an elevator, two elderly men of color greeted each other: "Amos!" "Andy!" and a title was born. They probably came up with the Kingfish character later on, during a subsequent elevator ride.

Yes, because these cartoons weren't a success in theaters (the proposed series was abandoned after "The Lion Tamer"). Apparently, people were willing to listen to Freeman Gosden & Charles Correll on the radio every weeknight, but NOT as cartoon characters. 27 years later, they tried again on TV- this time, as "southern animals in the big city", on "CALVIN AND THE COLONEL" {mostly adapted from "AMOS 'N' ANDY" radio scripts}.

    Live with it! That's 1934. It's history.
We're hopefully well on our way to ignoring
race in dealing with our fellow humans. The
next step is equal pride. Getting out of that
"poor me" I'm a black guy rut. With PRIDE,
    you can never be insulted.

I didn't know there were Amos 'n Andy cartoons, and don't know who did the voices. The Amos 'n Andy radio series were performed by two white actors. The later television series pf course, used two black actors.

I'm confused about why it's considered offensive that Amos and Andy were voiced by white men. The Simpsons have ethnic characters voiced by whites and I have never heard a complaint about that. I won't excuse the thick lipped caricature, but this story, like a lot of Amos and Andy stories, is standard sitcom/cartoon fair. Amos and Andy aren't depicted as bright, but neither are Homer and Barney or Fred and Barney or Ralph Cramden and Ed Norton. The drawings are bad, the story is funny.

I have this episode on VHS . I remember this as a kid in the 80's. Amos tells Andy to remember that Bullnecks head is soft and tells Andy to take his hat off and hit him in the head as Bullneck is hitting Andy in the head against the ropes which then knocks them both out and Andy ends up on top getting the Win! I'm 37 and I thought this was so funny as a kid but I look at it now and it was just a shady time to live in. Racism still lives on almost 80+ yrs later

So racist but I have an affinity for this. I used to own the video of this so it holds some memories for me. Racist but I liked it. In no way coning it but it's not as racist as they could have made it. Kingpin comes off pretty good. It's very Honeymooner-ish but with out the wives. Thanx for uploading this.

Over my life's work history I have worked with several real African's and have little respect for what African-Americans. A lot of what is today called racism had nothing to do with racism in its day. In 1963 while in the military everybody enjoyed the show Amos n Andy even by the black population. It was just good entertainment. Get over it.

"AS a priest, I can only say..."shame, shame, shame."
And it was produced almost 75 years ago. I'm sure that even in your own church practices and conditions existed at the same time that we'd now deem shameful. JDPUTT is right with his comment: if you have pride in your people, your family, and yourself, this stuff can't insult you.

I don't find this racist-these are caricatures. They are not necessarily meant to be accurate portrayals. TV and movies have a long history of using caricatures. Now if this offends you, then it's real simple. Don't watch it.

Slavery is one of the most evil things that men can do to one another. It has been seen in ancient Egypt and forward through history. It is important to remember, that is how we learn and evolve. The problem is that most people are so far removed from the horrors of yesterday that they bear no responsibility for those horrors. That is the past. This is the present, and I hope that in the future we respect each others differences instead of hating.

Well, it's better than the other Amos 'n' Andy cartoon, "The Lion Tamer,' but that was a pretty low bar to clear. It's kind of easy to see why this series failed. People here are obsessed with its being racist, but the real issue is that it's just kind of clunky and not very funny overall. The actors are accustomed to radio and not visual gags and this is basically just a radio script with crude visuals.
