Its 8 am, i have an exam, but Ill watch Jordan and Chris being Jordan and Chris
Where do you live? I'm trying to understand who's the main target audience of these promotional Olympus videos, because it's 3am here, so I don't think Brazil is this target audience.
Codrinus good luck for the exam
@@SatanSupimpa Romania. I mean, everyone will be able to see the video. I was interested in the mark iii tho
@@point_and_shooter But a bunch of channels posted videos for this camera exactly at the same minute, probably a requirement from Olympus, so they must have an audience they want to see it first.
SatanSupimpa I think that means they ended the embargo at 6:00PM in Japan.
Love, love, love these reviews where the camera being used is the camera the video is shot with. Kudos, Jordan!
That beach shot.... speechless...
Still looking for that tune. Unfortunately, searching for "sexy beach dude" yields no results.
The colours of Olympus photos and video are so nice
I'm an Olympus fanboy because their cameras do everything that I need it to do.
They're still very overpriced for their capabilities.
@@youknowwho9247 they're overpriced for their image quality in a controlled environment, sure. But the stabilization, features, weather sealing, and build quality are unmatched at ANY price.
@@jillianangell2570 lumix is still better
It is incomprehensible why this channel still has no more subscribers. These guys do good reviews about photo gear every time, and test both the photo and the video possibilities. This channel does not encourage people to buy things from those they earn from. If you look at what gray Tony is pushing all of us to buy, their personal books, videos etc .... At Tony it's all about money. This channel should have many more subscribers.
Hey Chris and Jordan! I'm from Costa Rica! I'm glad you guys visited my country, maybe next time I can help you guys find better places to shoot there (not that those ones were not good or something), I have many videos around Costa Rica and I know you guys only went to a few of the most common touristic places like Manuel Antonio, Quepos, Tarcoles and Jaco. You missed so much places over there, so be sure to return someday and let me know! Cheers!
Thank you Eduardo! It is a beautiful country that you live in! I missed the amazing waterfalls while I was there, and I'd love to see the cloud jungles too! I also need to set some time aside for more fishing!
@@niccollsvideo I wrote to Jordan on twitter, if either of you or both of you will go back, just let me know I can give you a list of places you could go depending on what you want to see most ;)
Thanks for the sacrifice of going to Costa Rica to test a new camera, I know it's a rough gig. I'm sure you miss the cold and snow of Cowtown. :)
It’s a long way from Canada to Costa Rica. I’m sure their arms got tired from flying all that way.
At about 6:40 you were talking about Pro Capture mode and said that once the camera focuses, it will not continue to focus. That is not correct. In Pro-Capture Low (which is still capable of up to 18fps), it most certainly will continue to autofocus. Your statement is correct for Pro Capture Hi, but definitely not for Pro Capture Low. (True on both the EM-1 II, and the EM1-X)
These E-m cameras are brilliant. That tracking comparison was not fair haha. A head popping out of the rough seas vs a single barely in focus face on a well lit basketball course.
Starry AF mode, love it 🤣🤣🤣
I ROTFL
Right up there with P mode for Professional.
@@Jawsjawsjawsrg hey if it works it works
Great job on the video. The camera does look interesting. Olympus does have a nice combination of features that most alternatives are lacking one or two of.
Yes, it does have numerous features lacking in the Sony and Canons.
It's fascinating that. As the Canon 6D Mark II came out. All of the lists of what reviewers on UA-cam were saying the 6D Mark II did not have. The Olympus M1 Mark II had. And now here we are. All of the reviewers saying what the Nikon and Canon mirrorless cameras don't have. And the Olympus M1 Mark III. Seems to have those things.
On the other hand they're still using the outdated MFT sensor format, which delivers significantly worse image quality than the competition. I guess Olympus is a decent brand for people who like to play around, but certainly not suitable for professionals who need the best results.
@@youknowwho9247 Did you not know that your latest Sony and Nikon cameras are still using a 5 or 6 year old 24 MP sensor, even older than this Olympus ?
@@TL-xw6fh I highly doubt that, since my Nikons have a 20 and a 45 mpix sensor.
4:57 "Starry as f**k" :))
Wow guys, I am from Costa Rica, love to see you around. Cheers!
I’m rooting for Olympus still, the positives you highlighted are quite nice. I want to love the little niche camera and see them thrive. But then I started as a Pentaxian so I have a thing for disparaged unappreciated systems.
My two favorite camera systems as well! Pentax has such amazing colors. And their menus!
Olympus has some really cool features on their cameras. Like the live exposure and hi res. Great video
Yes, it has so many features that are entirely missing in the equivalent pro cameras from Sony, Nikon and Canon. Indeed, it is about the same price as a point and shoot Fuji X100V, so it is tremendous value for money.
Because is more intended for hobbiest than professional work. I mean in portaits sports wedding what actually give you money all those cool features. Is more about high iso performance ,auto focus and glass. I didn't say it is nnot capable but not the best even a nikon d750 does the job and the glass is really adorable.
@@ivankiefer3886 sure... no "pro" would use the live comp or live bulb or the ND filter or the 7 stop IBIS or the pro capture mode or the hand held high res mode..... and olympus pro lenses are as good or better than any other brands lenses
@@rockysrider5352 used market is overflowing with nikon and canon cheap and good quality lenses and full frame bodys. pros wedding photographer (people who make a living out of it)they keep it simple and no wedding photographer needs pro res stuff or all the fractures that is why the nikon d750 is a old solid camera and symple is the most popular for the task.. So there is a reason why Olympus with those great cameras full of features which i love but is jut not working.
@@ivankiefer3886
Better to buy used, nikon d800e than d750 they are going for same price, when it comes to feature most of olympus outperforms any camera you buy.
Holly Molly ND in camera! Love that.
Nikon has had that for a decade. It's just called extended low ISO. Does the same thing...
@@youknowwho9247 And so what???
Great video and commentary as always. Any camera you get in your hands you make photos come to life. Awesome.
Great job guys. Excellent stills, excellent video, and outstanding editing. You guys are really on your game on this one. Bravo!
I was hoping for a new high resolution EVF. Happy to see the AF toggle I can really use that for wildlife. Hopefully the eye AF works great. Looks like I will be shooting my EM1.2 for a long time yet. However if the coming reviews show the AF with the 300mm is a lot better I might buy right away since that is my most used lens.
The Olympus EVF is best out there that comes to colors and speed. It is 120hz panel with progressive scanning (full resolution, unlike others that use much inferior interlaced that is lower resolution than specs says in dots) as well Olympus optics are best there.
The Olympus EVF is so accurate with exposure for each colors that I can get exposure right with 1/3 stop accuracy. No need for histogram, zebras, blinkies, waves etc etc. It is literally WYSIWYG.
ALREADY E-M1 in 2013 received firmware update that allowed you super easily to focus stars manually. It literally was just couple seconds turning focus ring and done!
And you can use with Olympus lenses trick, press mount unlock button and lens focus to infinity....
Used that for years and never fails. But doesn't work with non-digital lenses.
7:57 Baywatch is back baby! :D
Unfortunately without the babes.
The video coming out of that is really nice.
This looks like a fantastic camera, Olympus doing a lot of work to keep M43 competitive.
It's paying off:

Aren't there two different pro capture modes, a low and high one? In the low one there should be c-af available, right?
Yup that’s correct. All the reviewers ignore that and then complain about the lack of AF in pro capture mode.
Yep... "Reviewers" don't even know half of the features Olympus has, and then how to use them. They don't even spend one hour to go through menus, as they would find them most logical there is (mk2 menu change was worse than what it was previously).
And then they completely miss the functions that they call lacking...
Great review guys. Nice shots in Costa Rica. Love the information and the critique, well done. I appreciate your efforts. I like your commments, comparisons and information. Your review are allways packed full of information yet you do not waste time and get to the point ASAP. Thanks!
As always enjoyed the review. What a beautiful place. Loved the light.
I have to say that the comment on pro capture seemed a bit funny. It was kind of like saying that the wheels on the airplane are good when it's on the ground but they will not work well in the air. I don't think that pro capture was ever designed for the uses you described. It's for capturing that subject where you know where they're going to be and they will only be there for a split second. For that it works very well.
Yah I agree. That's why we talked about stationary birds taking off from a nest for example. It's awesome for those situations. I just don't want anyone to think they could frame moving subjects with it easily.
I love computational photography in cameras, this is the way to go. Such a shame that the price is too high.
Back when I was choosing a camera system, I narrowed it down to Fuji & Olympus. I went with Fuji in the end, but dayum, those Olympus colors have got me double taking
What?, hell not they don't for me.
great review, got to say one thing blew me away, the lack of noise and the superb natural colours/skintones etc, plus the detail, i normally shoot with a Canon 5DSR so no stranger to hi res, but there is no way on earth my Canon could have produced that little noise at anything after 2000 iso never mind what you where shooting at, is it really that clean ????
I opened that ep thinking, oh, its that aftervideo of the EM5-III, than i saw the EM1 logo, i like, HOLY SHIT
Gonna miss you guys!
Video footage looks nice. Location certainly helps.
Minor upgrade in features from the Mark II to the mark III, though still feature-packed. HHHR and Live are very desirable.
Some things remained unchanged, unfortunately, but are not crippling the camera.
Since I only own an old EM5 mark II, this new EM1 markIII represents quite an upgrade. If I already owned the em1 markII, the mark III would be much less tempting.
Outstanding image of Jordan on the right side of the frame at 3:59
I don't see any reason to check that timecode, I'll just take the compliment!
I've personally seen him eat at least one banana in our lifetimes so, you be the judge.
Excellent and professional review as always thank you
I’m really liking that live ND! Would be cool if Panasonic would include that on the next g10 or even GH5(s)👍
@@Makta972 I guess Pana G9 EVF is behind too along with having a focusing stick on the battery pack, 4K 50/60P, 10 bit internal recording, had battery pack charging, and more....
@@Makta972
G9 have high res mode, stop and research about cameras instead of making fool of your self.
Imagine having Starry Sky AF and Pentax’s Astrotracer in one body!
This footage is noticeably softer than your GH5 footage. Seems Olympus is still lagging behind the Lumix M43 bodies for video.
Agreed, I like the Olympus colours, but the GH5 is a sharper image with fewer compression artifacts.
@@thatjordandrake What was the video setting set? Was the video shot in 4k?
These ones are educational and enjoyable the same time which I love when trying to educate same amount as entertain!
Jordan looking cool and starry AF channeling the Hoff.
They could call it E-M1 IIs. Anyway you can criticise what you want, but this camera is still unique. And the 20mp sensor is still very good, I am sure they compared it with new ones and didn’t see enough improvements for replacing it and paying for the new ones...otherwise I can’t justify the lack of innovation there! Does the back illuminated technology work only with APSC? ANYWAY, still a great camera!!! And 20MP are enough for very big prints and light cropping.
So Olympus take guys to a trip, give some time for hands-on, and Nikon do what with their D6? Just press release on their page???
Nikon itself is embarrassed with what they delivered with the D6. It should have been the last great DSLR flagship but it's a damp squib. As a Nikon shooter it's about time they put some of their execs against a wall and shot them.
Nice video guys! I WISH that Sony had that IBIS
Amazing stabilization on the handheld video 💪👍
Awesome video, awesome camera! Thanks for the again outstanding show :-)
3:57, woah, that new camera seems to be turning all the greens waaaaay magenta 😀
Also, I swear I have been reading 'Starry As Fuck" every time I see it, too! I actually just made that comment on Joe Edelman's video! HA!
battery grip for all their body ... a dream come true ... small body with small battery grip .... love love love ....
I couldn't have delivered the "starry AF" line without laughing. My hats off to you Chris!
Great video! Did you record it in OM-log? Is there any kind of zebra or highlight warning when you shoot video? Or just histogram? Thanks!
The EVF is more than capable as it is. What's the point of having a 5 MP EVF just for viewing?
I thought that I missed the 12-45 F4 Pro in Olympus' lens lineup - turns out it is actually new (and I find it much more interesting than the E-M1III ;-)).
Yes Olympus is on the right track, Ibis and a competitive AF System are the best features to make it top league, a better EVF and two fast SD slots would get the crown on top.
BTW that's way I sold may G9, the AF isn't the best. Now I'm with Sony A9 but still missing the body of the G9, best ergonomicd I've used so far.
The AF system is what's holding Panasonic back to become the most popular brand.
Hey gents, the pro cap h does not refocus. However, pretty sure pro cap l does refocus between each shot so you can track a bit. Use it for h.s. sports often
Ahhh - The beach of Manuel Antonio 😆 - Costa Rica is really nice, was one of the best vacations --- especially if you want to shoot wildlife
Jordan on the beach in slo-mo. What more could you want?
It’s a crazy day when the Em-1x3 is getting more hype than the Nikon D6....Ufaaaaaaaaaa
how do you evaluate "hype"???
by YT clicks, or DP review fanboy comments? I don´t get it.
It takes a 1000 bugs and you can get as many clicks on YT as you like, same for Facebook as proven and Samsung showed 2012 that you can successfully destroy a competitor brand (HTC in that case) on forums by payed idiots. Though the samsung approach went out of their control.
And today we know why. The D6 was a meh kind of release. You can't create hype around something that doesn't deserve any hype
Thanks a lot Chris and Jordan ... with such a good review I can already now say I have no need for upgrading from the MKII.
Where does it then leave an IQ hungry man? I will not know until 4 years have past and the MK4 appears. And who knows if Oly will be there anymore?
Wow! This camera must be REALLY great if this video contains all they have to complain about! (Usually Olympus is soundly trashed by DPR.)
The live ND combined with the best stabilization system in the world can be utilized to provide as example of just how capable Olympus cameras are.
Except both those gimmicks are only crutches to half fix the problems their tiny MFT sensors bring with them. Nikon has had the 'live ND' for a decade, it's just called extended low ISO because calling it ND is marketing BS. And the one stop or so of extra stabilisation only makes up for half the noise disadvantage the system has against full frame, and only when the subject isn't moving. Applauding Olympus for those 'features' is like buying a car with no engine and then boasting that it has such good handles on the sides to make it easier to push it...
@@youknowwho9247
Never did he say mf has less noise or have advantage that relate to noise, stop the strawman.
I hope they have a sale on the mkII now :D
Did Jordan used to be on Bay watch?
Yes. He was the Director of Photography. :)
Debating between this and the Fuji XT-4...
Fuji xt4 is better in iq and Fuji ecosystem really gives you everything.
Superb video.
Hope to see a lot of it Ken
The stabilization on the video looked amazing. I think it’s a great camera and I’m happy with the price.
I don’t understand how ppl miss the point of the em1x. It’s a niche camera for professional sports and wildlife. it makes so much sense to me that I’m confused on why ppl don’t understand that.
Fair call if you didn't understand that camera it wasn't for you. The X interests me more than this camera with its modest updates. Just waiting to see one new at a great price.
Damn...no 4k60 10bit.... wouldve loved to see that...how ling will it take for them to do that man...
Olympus is more focused in professional photography and not everyone needs 4k60fps
@@s3tsun444___ Good one. Any company who's focused on actual professionals would not stick with the outdated, inferior MFT sensor format. It's an enthusiast system at best, nowhere near suitable for the working professional who needs results.
@@youknowwho9247 There are Professionals who use m43s cameras in their line of work. You cant downplay the fact that these "enthusiasts" deliver results for their clients. It's in the user, not the camera dude.

Great review, as well as the pictures !
A bit late but would you recommend buying this in 2023? and which lens should i buy with it for both video and photography
Thanks for the review Chris. Love the E-M1 series both for photo and video, with the Mark III what I would like to know is when in video mode does the video pass through the HDMI output when not recording? I Often VLOG while recording video externally with the Mark II.
totally distracted by the new haircut. loved it, Chris!
Not really tempting after more than 3 years to the E-M1.2. They still have only one UHS-II Slot which is insane.
The review video is good though :)
Not having dual uhs-ii cards is really baffling... Probably to keep it as the only defining feature the e-m1x has over the e-m1iii, either that or they're really struggling financially and need to reuse as much of the mark ii internals as possible.
It's sad, if it had that second uhs-ii slot I would have bought this camera once it dropped in price a bit. At least the G9 isn't getting any worse and it's already affordable.
"Costa Rica: it's an amazing country so far."
I see you're giving your final judgement some time in case it turns out to be a terrible country after all.
Judgment
Starry Sky AF got me 🤣
You can customise how erratic or "sticky" the AF tracking is! Was probably set to default. So could have been set to more sticky...
Even the Olympus shooter with us dodged the tracking system and stuck with traditional AF. You can adjust it and in many situations it would do ok but it's not where the competition is yet.
The "sticky" is only the timer that how long AF system waits before it focus to new sudden distance. It is meant when something travels between you and subject that AF system doesn't start focusing to that object between.
Olympus has one of the best tracking systems out there, but you get all fooled if you really try with low contrast subjects.
Tracking is special mode, and it is best to anyways use AF point manually selected as you can track objects better than any camera.
I was looking at the OM-D EM-1 Mk III review and in that review and the EM-5 Mk III review you pointed us back to the EM-1X review for video capabilities. Back in the EM-1X you noted that contrary to the 24 fps 4K H.264 video spec 237 mbps, the fastest you saw was about 155 mbps and about 115 mbps average. That was before the release of the E-M1X. We are well past that now and have seen the release of the E-M5 III and now the E-M1 III, and I assume, some firmware updates for the E-M1X. Has any of these new bodies or new firmware updates resulted in better performance?
09/01/2020 Thank you for this information.
Great review and neat photos/video. I gotta know: how are you recording audio? I do not see wireless lavalier mic so you must be using a shotgun.....what make and model? Is your editor removing/reducing wind and background noise in post? Obviously you have a very good video edit team.
It really would be good for you to always tell us in the notes what microphones you are using in your videos. Thank you. 🙂
IIRC since the camera store TV, they have used the wireless laveriel mics that they have under shirts etc. There is old video from them explaining how they get to keep them hidden.
Jordan does the audio too and the editing..
For focusing on stars don’t you just manual focus to infinity? 🤔
SFseis too lazy. What happens if set to infinity? Will the stars be out of focus?
Omg you used a Panasonic lens at at an olympus event!
Two in fact! They were ok though. :)
Wow...just when I bought panasonic g9 (I love that camera btw), but then this comes out. Also I was in shock by the high ISO photos, like wtf?? Almost like a full frame. Are these pics processed or SOOC?
Dont worry, the G9 is a beast of a camera itself.
I was hoping they would have been more aggressive with price if they were not going to have huge improvements. $2400 does not seem like it. It was rumored at the E-M1 II list price of $1700 but seemed to good to be true. The E-M5 III did go on sale pretty quickly at a price I would not hesitate of $999.
It is 1799$ USD now. The initial pricing on B&H was incorrect.
Would you buy the em1x in 2020?
Would this camera be suitable for professional wedding videography?
Ly He of course it is. Look at Joseph Ellis
@@TITAOSTEIN Thanks I will look into it.

The 12-45mm looks like the perfect hiking lens.
Starry AF!! That got me LOL!!
Great video as always :)
One correction in ProCap L the camera can autofocus and thats up to 18fps - in ProCap H focus is fixed up to 60 fps
7:39 which camera's are the better options for sport fotography for this amount of money then?
DPreview? what are the better options.
Nikon d500 i guess.
Is it just me, or are the pictures you show in videos where you test MFT or Pentax cameras always better than when you test other brands?
Maybe this is a stupid question, but is there any case of when a star would be at any other focal point than the farthest possible? What exactly is the Starry AF mode doing besides focusing towards infinity?
It didn't occur to you to compare this to the Mark II?
Not really. It's a launch event so the emphasis is on the new camera, and it's technically pre production too so comparisons would be unfair. Plus these press events are whirlwinds with almost zero down time. We prioritized the 12-45 as our second video and barely got that done.
This was an initial hands-on, are we going to get a more comprehensive review guys?
They just uploaded one on their website

Starry AF what a great idea!
Well done, only disappointment for me is the old sensor 20MPX ??? Otherwise I like it a lot. I agree with you on the E-M1X , even now is going for $2500 and probably nobody still buying ...
Also, when is the release for stores ???
I hope olympus can have 2 range of camera bodies, one for current classic and the others like me prefers more futuristic and more modern design even at their low end like em10 ....
Is there an official statement form Olympus About still using the old EVF here?
Starry AF stands for Autofocus.... the only AF in the other meaning you have mentioned goes for your intro :-D love you guys :-D
Fast AF I got A7C thinking about adding em1 mark 3 to my arsenal, will there be a mark4?
Can I video 1080p 60 fps with continuous autofocus cars and motorcycles and runners and bicycles coming at me and passing by me and continuing on with this camera? Or with the M1 Mark II if the video in this is similar?
Great video.
What would be your thoughts regarding this camera compared to the fugi xpro2 or 3?
