Having his autobiography it turns out that he was born in the UK but his parents moved to the US when he was not quite 4 years old. Then they came back to the UK when he was 7. So he was already in both countries. He also had an American accent and was bullied by kids and tackled badly because he didn't know how to play football at the time ;-)
Oddly he didn't follow it up with something similar. I mean, Judas Priest had Screaming for Vengeance, then Defenders of the Faith, I don't really know why Billy didn't progress further in a similar direction. Whiplash Smile was good, but not great.
I think Billy followed trends and experimented. Which would have been musically stimulating, but it did change his musical course and there was a break from the hard rock/punk direction.

Billy's album 'Rebel Yell' was for me the best of the 80's rock albums.
