ENDANGERED Italian Tortoises

- Italy has tortoises? Why yes, yes Italy has some very endangered tortoises, actually. The same ones also live in parts of France and Spain and while many of you have come to know them simply as Hermann’s tortoises, the ones found in these countries are the rare, endangered western subspecies. Testudo hermanni hermanni, the western Hermann’s tortoise, is one of planet earth’s many, wonderful chelonians. These remarkable, shelled creatures are marked with gorgeous, vibrant colors and interesting behaviors. Their appearance, along with a small size make them highly coveted. Illegal poaching along with other factors threaten their very existence with some populations being at risk of extinction in today’s world. Western Hermann’s tortoises have been a huge part of Garden State Tortoise over the years and we’ve become known for our work with them. It’s our pleasure to bring you a closer look into their beauty, natural history and what’s being done to save them.

I got one 8 years old mind reader , a Eastern Hermanns tortoise and he has made me a better person ! 💘
Awesome!!
I do admire your dedications to reptiles and reckon you are one of most luckiest guys on earth . Fyi , I'm #Otis's die-hard friend ! 😍 I had saved 🐽 from drowning twice when he was young since then we have a very special bond between us . He is house trained and doesn't live in an enclosure but we do go to the garden everyday though . Love all the videos and they are so inspiring !
I would love to see more videos about Hermanns, such beautiful tortoises. Thanks for another great video!
Awesome!! Thank you 🙏🏻
My lil Pebble, he’s a western Hermann’s. In the UK he has to be raised under the CITIES regulations so thanks you Kenan and yourselves I have raised him as you do, his shell is absolutely gorgeous with the famous keyhole scute and high contrasting colourings. He is super active chasing and climbing anything and everything like a true lemming. He acts a lot like Otis, he is super inquisitive he loves to know what I’m doing and trying to “help” or just enjoying following me around.🐢🤗
Awesome! Glad to hear and good luck with Pebble!
Ok
Hi guys, congrats on winning the snake discovery build off, that enclosure was gorgeous, and yes, more Herman’s tortoises please and also I don’t know if you made a video about it, I would like to see a video about the impact of red sliders as invasive species?
Great idea Patrick and thank you!
Yes, I would love to learn more, especially dalmatians. I am in love with mine! I would like to know more about his species. It is hard to find a lot about them, probably because they are not classified as their own species (which I learned from you). They are often linked together with other hermann's, and I would love to know specifics about them.
Thank you for your very informative videos! And for my Gus!
Will do, thanks Shannon!
Love tortoises, and love your videos ! Two years of owning a Hermann's after wanting one for a long time. She's one of the family now 🐢💚 always something to learn!
Awesome thanks for watching!!
That was a great video Chris. Sure love to see more about the little hermanns
Thanks john!
Hey paisano what a great video about Italian 🐢 really enjoyed it thank you so much putting out such great content love your channel
Thank you Geno!
what a beautiful tortoise i just love the knowledge that i learn from your shows🙂
Thanks Debra ☺️
I love watching the tortoises body language throughout their daily lives, maybe you could do episodes that are a day in the life of certain species, especially the specific animals that have character. Appreciate what you do!
Thanks and great idea!
Great video Chris, Thanks for bringing awareness to these lovely tortoise’s and doing your very best at Garden State Tortoise in keeping the Western Hermann’s pure as possible..Great ..👍🏻
Thank you so much 🙏🏻
hello guys, as always I want to congratulate you for your passion that when combined with science and knowing how to disseminate it becomes a really powerful and above all important thing. I am writing to you from the center of the Mediterranean and here many people are not aware of the fragility and importance of this species, it amazes me how on the other side of the world someone has noticed them and cares about their conservation. if you ask me if I would like to see more videos with this theme? the answer is absolutely yes!
Thank you so much Andrea and thank you for agreeing!
Came for Otis. Left with lots of information and facts about tortoises. Thanks for the great video!
I have a Hermanns tortoise, I appreciate all the information you provide.
Awesome Nancy thanks!
Thanks again for your videos. Always great to get more education on the western. Would love to see some more videos on the different ways of caring and raising for single western / tortoise. From the day people receive a hatchling all the way up to adulthood. A lot of conflicting information out there for beginingers. Even in the Tortoise forum. Many ways of doing it, different areas of the country and the world. Some Hot some very cold. What are more of the plus and minus of each. Just a thought.
Great idea and we get so many emails from people losing them by following wrong information from Facebook groups, tortoise forums and other outdated places.
Thats great they are being reconized for their loss in the wild and getting the help they deserve👍 love western herman tortoises and the other hermans as well. Thanks for sharing💚💚🐢 always enjoy the knowledge👌
Thanks Jennifer!
Congratulations on your enclosure-build win!! I voted for you and you really deserved it so much! Just to follow up, the three RedFoots are doing very, very well. Yay!!🐢❤️🐢
Thanks Lori and glad to hear they’re well!
Great video Chris and Casey!
Thanks again Tom!
Chowing down on gorgeous flowers - so cute. Your channel is edifying and fun. I believe that little hatchling yawned - adorable. I am learning so much...
Thank you!!
So peaceful.
🐢❤️
Amazing educational video. As always..
Thank you!
More more more please. Great video as usual Chris. The Western H. is a stunning tort.
Aaaaaaand... subscribed instantly. As a German Reptile Vet I very much appreciate your enclosures, naturalistic keeping like that seems to be rare in the US, at least from what I have seen so far. I love how well you point out the characteristics of Western hermannis, such a pretty species
I would love to know more about all the Herman's tortoise species!
You got it!
Yes I would love to learn more about caring for them. I have been doing research on getting a tortoise for almost 2 years now on and off. I narrowed my choices for our family to the Hermann's tortoise because of its size and simple diet. I currently live in Florida but might be possibly moving to Tennessee so that played a factor as well. Always love your videos and can't wait to learn more!
I had an amazing Hermanns for over ten years. He sadly died of a freak illness despite us doing everything we could for him. They are wonderfully personable, friendly creatures. He used to spend hours running around the garden finding clovers and danilions to munch.
They are a beautiful species. Thank you for your work in preserving them.
Thanks David!
I love the Hermanns tortoises
They are SO beautiful. I had the privilege of seeing them in Sicily some years ago, basking in the sun. Love what you are doing.🖤🇨🇦
Always more hermans please. Brilliant vid.
Those babies are so cute. I loved the picture of the one coming out of his shell. I always love to hear about conservation efforts for any endangered animal.
They looked so good next to the lavender flowers 🐢🌸
They do!
Another amazing video of yours I just found. ❤
Glad you've got extensive videos on these guys, and the info i saw on the tortoise forum and your website, because i honestly couldn't tell them apart. Some breeders just sell them all as hermanns as well. A russian tort video would be cool. Are there different subspecies?
Thank you! Yes there are different subspecies of Russians as well.
Love your videos. More hermanni videos
Thanks Nick, will do!
I love all your content it’s amazing how much information you have to share I have my homeschool children watching some of your content now and they love it
Thank you Catrina!!
Yes definitely do some more episodes about Hermann tortoises
Will do.
I would love to see more about all species of Chelone and Testudo. I find it all fascinating, and have studied it all my life. (Yes, Chris, there are other turtle geeks out there!!) My goal at one time was to have a Tortoise/Lemur/Parrot sanctuary. Ask Casey if this wouldn't be the finest of fine animals!
Excellent video, very informative!
Please do cover more on these beautiful specie. Lovely 😍
Great info!
Thanks!!
Oh wow we must protect them from extinction anyway I like your video I'm so glad you care about your tortoises and you take good care of them to
Love this kind of educational content. It's a pure pleasure watching your videos. My personal wish is more of north african testudo species :)
Thank you so much and noted!
Such educational videos. Thank you!
Yes, purity. Here in Taiwan, all the Hermanns being bred are mixed. So, while they are still pretty cool, none of them look as good as the pure ones.
Wow sorry to hear that!
Thanks!
Been subscribed since 20,000
Amazing, thank you 🙏🏻
Congratulations 🎉🎊🍾 for coming in first place with the build off competition at snake 🐍 discovery I love ❤️ how realistic ur build was great job 👏🏾 have a great day and yes I love 💕 me some human 🐢 Otis lol 😂

I'd love an in depth video o the Eastern Herman's. I love the westerns but they are rare in collections, unlike the Eastern. Awesome e, awesome content

GOD BLESS 🐢💖🐢💖🐢💖
Hi Lois, sounds good and sure. Thank you, where did you see it announced that we won? We haven’t seen anything lol.
@@GardenStateTortoise
Saw it on the Snake Discovery channel last night. Hope I didn't spoil the surprise.
@@loispadgett6306 not at all, was it in a video? Not finding anything
@@GardenStateTortoise
Yes it was a video. Maybe it was Friday I saw it.
Love your channel and hermanni haven site. Please more videos on hermanni
Thank you!!!! We surely will do more.
Absolutely, more videos about them. I love all tortoises especially the Herman’s, as I have a 2 and a half year old eastern Hermans.
Awesome, will do!
Omgoodness this was so informative! And what perfect timing!
I can’t wait to get my little nugget!
In this video you mentioned the Western and brumation in the winter. What temps are too cold for these littles?
And yes! I’d love more videos on these beautiful creatures 🥰
Thanks sherry! As adults they can handle temps down to single digits as long as they are properly burrowed into appropriate ground.
@@GardenStateTortoise
That is amazing!
@@GardenStateTortoise
We are eventually going to make the little nugget his own area outside in the spring summer and fall. We have the perfect spot but I think our winters here in Duluth MN will be too cold.
Fantastic video as usual. Dug deep into one of the ones that I keep. Any chance you'll cover Russian/Horsfield or Greek Tortoises?
Thanks and yes, we absolutely will!
Awesome video! My family and I love the Mt Etna tortoises we got from you , they are thriving in an outdoor enclosure, can’t wait to see more videos on the different localities, you guys are must see Sunday morning tv😎👍
Thanks Robert!!!
Thanks for pointing to the tortoise discovery in Pompeii. It links two interesting fields: archeology and herpetology 👍🏻 Doesn’t happen often I guess
my-YOUR-ka........
Great!
Chris said it right!
Love this from Sweden
🙌🐢❤️
Yes please, more Testudo hermanni and/or graeca content: info on the different locales and subspecies. Preferably accompanied by more video material of the animals in their pens, rather than on the table. No criticism, just my wish, you're doing a great job!
Yes, please! And congratulations on the Snake Discovery win! Your enclosure is beautiful!
Thank you!!!
Yes please more Hermanns 👍🏻
You got it.
Hey Chris! Love the video. I was thinking it would be awesome to see some content on artificial brumation for those interested in keeping chelonians that brumate but at higher temps than most US states offer. Thanks!
love watching you. we learn so much. and your little girl is a mini you. so cute. i also have to say, i am a big big fan of otis. if you sold t shirts with fan of otis on it, i would love one.
Thank you so much!!! We do have Otis shirts in our store (it’s at the top of our UA-cam page) but “fan of Otis” is a great idea!
I have just put a down payment on Testudo Hermanni Hermanni for next year. 5 different locals. Working on bringing more threatened and endangered species to Ireland to set up assurance colonies here. Also to make them more accessible to people here to help the species in the long run!
Here in Sardinia we have them and the beatiful marginata that is much bigger and darker.I live in the northern part of sardinia(Gallura)where we have only the marginata but i’ve seen some hermann near Cagliari so many times
love western hermann's. what is the tuscan locale?
Don't forget the ruin lizard, and the beautiful lagartas!
they are beautiful! 🙏that we can save them!😇❤️
Is it necessary to brumate your Hermanns tortoise if it is kept in an indoor enclosure. I live in an apartment. I've been reading a lot about using a refrigerator for brumation. Could you do a video about how to do this process properly, whether it is the box or refrigeration process? Thanks for all your videos Chris!
Is the framing used for the outdoor enclosures standard Pressure treated wood?
Yes please
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
How does one get involved in helping preserve & care for one of these amazing creatures??
I would love to get one or 2 to raise them outside but what type of vegetation do I need to plant for them? And can they eat the flowers from Arden’s Hardy Hibiscus?
A very cute turtle🐢! ! I long for you!!😊
my hermans tortise seems to be sleeping way more and eating just a bit less is this because the days are getting shorter and colder? would love to know
🙂👍👍
☺️🐢
@@GardenStateTortoise Tortoises, turtles, and uromastyx are my favorite animals❤ your channel and everything you guys do is amazing🙏
Is that ROSE OF SHARON blooms they're eating? What other common garden blooms and foliage do they seem to enjoy?
I live in the south of France and have two "pure breed" hermani hermani and I give all of my babies each year to a program for reintroduction. I also identify hybrid specimens freely for people so they know if they can breed their specimens or not and I also do a lot of education with people, I basically put my two girls in my car every sunday and we go to different parcs so everyone come see me because they never saw turtles on a leash and I do my speech 😅. Corsican tortoises are a lot more yellow and the specimens from Var where I live for example are a lot more dark and brownish, mines are Corsican so the people I work with treasure them like crazy since they are so rare. The amount of hermani boettgeri who arrive each summer from Maghreb is crazy, they sell them for around 80€ each and it's their fault if we are losing the pure hermani hermani in France and Italy. Like usual a few greedy individuals destroy everything for eveyone else ! 😮💨
Best overall first turtle?
My mom found 2 greec toirtoise when she was young and they are also mine now but the shelter they live in is not so nice could you tell me how to build a proper shelter for them (they often attack each other what about that and should i keep them seperatet please help me it would be very important thanks
最高です!
Man i really want this western hermani, got all the testudos except wester hermani 😢
can you do a video on the marginated tortoise subspecies
👍🏻
Ho 3 hermanni e 1 greca❤❤❤
🥰🍝🍷🐢💕
🐢☺️
I saw what I can only assume was an eastern Herman’s Turtle at Petco the other day. It was very energetic and running up against the glass the entire time.
They had two pamphlet there for pet care, one labeled Arid Tortoise for both Greek and Russian and another pamphlet for Russian Tortoise(testudo horsfieldi), both had the same picture and the exact same information. I can’t help but think you can’t just put Greek and Russian together and call it a day.
You can’t. It’s ridiculous what Petco allows.
I just purchased a Hermanns Tortoise from Petco. I didn’t want to, because I didn’t want to encourage them carrying them, but when I walked out, all I could remember is how he was non stop trying to claw through the plastic until I put my hand there and he would calm down. How stressed he must be. I gave it a couple days in case a more experienced tortoise owner came along, but I also remembered the kid there yelling “A turtle! Look how he’s moving- that’s sooo cool, I want one!” And all the horror stories I hear of them dying within a year of purchase because the owners don’t know anything about them.😢So I went back and bought him/her.
I know the basics of care, but would love to know a lot more and would like to provide a more naturalistic care, both in set up and routine. I live in Wisconsin, so this tortoise is inside for the winter… which isn’t ideal, but it does give me time to set up the outdoor enclosure properly. Also working on expanding the indoor enclosure. Combing your videos for ideas. I have the book you displayed which does have a lot to say about their natural environment but is not a good how to on duplicating. I notice your outdoor enclosure has some cover but also large open spots. Is that due to what you wanted to plant (eg low lying, sun loving weeds)? Most wild places show scrub bush after scrub bush and they talk about scurrying from one dappled area to the next. Mine loves to climb and I would like to add more rocks and other obstacles- do they need to have a run where they actually run in a straight line, full speed ahead. On good days I take mine outside and I can’t tell if it likes to cruise or if it’s just looking for a good hide that might be in that direction and who also gets distracted by yummy looking things. They are routine oriented- how does this effect enrichment? I have many questions. If you could just put out a video every day or so, that would be great! 😂
When are you gonna do a localities video and what locality are your western Herman’s tortoises?
When we’re ready to and we have an entire website about our western Hermann’s as we have several localities. HermanniHaven.com
@@GardenStateTortoise ok… thank you, sorry was just asking. I’ve read up on the info on the website about the Penninear, Insular, south France and balearic and was just curious if you might do a full video as I saw it mentioned elsewhere about on your channel about where you had asked what viewers may like to see to let you know, so I was just curious and was curious which locale you bred to sell. Sorry thanks again.
Just so you know they are also found in Croatia 🐢
Beautiful tortoise…I didn’t know it existed. Ross breeding is happening. in other species as well…damn humans.
So to stop from going extinct the tortoise mated with it's eastern counterpart and man decided that was wrong? So did the population of tortoise decrease or just the purity? Yes I'm serious I want to know.
No that’s not correct. People have illegally released its eastern cousin into areas where the western is native. The result has been hybridization and even animals dying. The eastern Hermann’s tortoise typically has larger clutches of eggs and bigger eggs. By cross breeding with an eastern, a female western can die because it is unable to carry the larger eggs or clutches.
Western hermanns ❤️❤️❤️❤️
🙌
Okay ✅
👍🏻
Do u ever have eastern like otitis for sale
No, we have yet to meet another turtle like Otis.
Hi Chris i am looking for a male western hermanni if you have a male for sale please let me know thanks Bruce

Why do you sound so much like Coyote Peterson(aka Brave Wilderness) I can't lol. On a better note, those are BEAUTIFUL tortoises, no wonder they are poached. Illegal pet trade huh?
