How to replace the starter in a Mazda MPV Replacement - VOTD

Starter replacement: 2 to 4 hours.
This video will guide you through the process of replacing the starter on a 2001 Mazda MPV mini van. It is in a real tight spot so it is hard to get to. I think you should work from the top and bottom. If you disconnect the fuel line like I did, make sure you connect it back good, this one popped loose 3 times. The last time I connected it I heard it click twice.
Process should be good from the 1999 through the 2006 model years.

Just changed the starter today on a 2003 Mazda MPV. Didn't have to jack the mini van up at all was able to do all from the top. Still had a lot of wire harnesses in the way, and biggest difference was I had to remove radiator hoses to get to a starter bolt. The 2003 starter only has 2 bolts as opposed to 3. Took about 3 hours all together since it was my first time working on a Mazda. Your video did help me get a general idea of what to do. Thank you for making this.

What a great instructional video! Complete with safety tips (wheel chocks, jack stand + jack for backup/support and disconnecting the battery)! My kind of instructor, very thoughtful and helpful, thanks for this video! I came upon this video because I have a coolant leak that seems to be coming out of the back of the engine. The front (radiator, hoses, etc) are all bone dry, checked underneath and the beads of coolant are on the back side. I was told the heater hose is in the back of the engine near the starter so this video helps me out with locating where the starter is. Hopefully I'll find the source of the leak from there. Thanks again!

Your video was so helpful!! Now I'm hoping you can help. My husband replaced the starter with your help on my 2000 Mazda MPV, but now it won't shift out of gear and even the little circle that shows you what "letter" gear you are in isn't showing up. This wasn't an issue before he removed everything and pulled out the starter. Can you think of anything he could have either forgotten to hook back up, although car starts fine now, or maybe something else that could have come loose while he was getting the starter out that is around that area? Would appreciate any advice. Thank you!
Lisa Wood Sounds like the PNP switch has gotten out of wack. The shifter cable to the transmission attaches to the PNP switch. Make sure nothing is jammed up on that.

Have an older Mazda MPV, 1992. My starter just died and the book doesn't show where the starter casing is located. A few DIY mechanic suggested that I bang the starter with a crowbar or something. Know you said your MPV is in 2000's. Do you have any ideas where the starter is located on the older Mazda MPV's?
m. ellis No but they are always mounted at the transmission, where it mounts to the engine. You can follow the positive battery cable to it, the starter is it's first stop. Tapping it may work a few times but will not for long.

Does Ford also share parts with Nissan? To me when I go to the wreaking yard they resemble each other. That is my opinion though
