    I just did this job on my 2014 Fusion. As other commenters have pointed out, if you put the car in maintenance mode you can push the piston back into its housing with a screwdriver: just insert this between the old brake pad and the rotor before you remove the caliper, and the piston will slide right back until it is flush with the housing, Remember to first take the cap off the brake fluid reservoir to allow the fluid level to rise.
    My rotors, like the ones in the video, had plenty of metal left on so for $30 each I got them skimmed ( as opposed to $100 for new ones). It's worth noting that the discard thickness of the rotors is 9.5 mm (or about 374 thou). If you tell this to the machine shop they can calculate whether there is enough metal to safely machine the rotors.
    With 2 trips to the machine shop it took me a morning's work, and a total cost all in of $133.

    Another way to turn the caliper is to use needle nose pliers in the indents that are there for the special tool. This way you don't have to worry about the boot. But the easiest way is to use parking brake maintenance mode, which some models need a scan tool to use, some can be done by doing a sequence with the gas pedal, the key, and the parking break switch. I see a lot of people saying "you can push it back with your hand in maint mode", and for me that was BS. I still needed a tool, I used a piston pusher similar to the one you made yourself. Just NEVER take it out of maint mode without putting something in there to hold the piston in place. I made this mistake (long story) and my piston over traveled all the way out. Ruined the caliper trying to rotate it and push it back in. I would also suggest cracking the bleeder if using the maint mode method, and putting a drip pan under to catch everything, and maybe a small hose to direct it.

    If you put the emergency brake into service mode before you start you won't have to turn it you just push it in from that point

    If put in maintenance mode you don't have to turn the piston

      @@ChadMyers73 I was the other half on this brake job tonight and I also wanted to say thanks so much for taking the time to make this video. We both wholeheartedly appreciate it. We were going to try to compress the cylinder either way (because we ran out of options) but knowing that it had to be spun/screwed in the whole way before we could do so was a nice reassurance. Again thanks so much bud!

      That is a point the video did not make, and I believe, in use, the piston does not turn, because the nubs on the back of the inboard pad engage the recesses on the piston, preventing it's movement There is a screw mechanism that pushes the piston outwards to apply the parking brakes and they are retracted back in by a square cut seal that is there to seal the brake fluid in the caliper. By using the "maintenance mode" the screw mechanism turns in reverse to move away from the piston, but the piston still has to be pushed in manually just like a conventional caliper's piston.

    • @butters421
      @butters421 6 років тому

      @@MrDayrock07 are there multiple sizes for the tool? We bought the only one that AutoZone had and none of the options worked. We ended up using a pair of channel locks to spin the cylinder clockwise until it locked up and were able to compress it. Also, someone commented that once the vehicle is in parking brake maintenance mode you do not need to spin the cylinder head at all, any idea if there's any truth to this?
