  • Peer mentorship played a crucial role in helping navigate the complexities of managing services for her children diagnosed with severe disorders. Initially overwhelmed and unaware of available resources like the Innovations waiver, Christen found support through a peer mentor provided by UNC Charlotte's TEACCH program.
Through peer mentorship, she learned about critical options such as the crisis waiver slot, which significantly improved her children's access to necessary services. Empowered by her experiences, she became a peer mentor herself, helping over 11 families access essential services and advocating for legislative change in the special needs community.
The Arc of North Carolina supported and encouraged her mentorship efforts, emphasizing the importance of community and communication in advocating for better services and support.
