  • So why am I making bread for my family you ask. Well lets break it down.
A 5lb. sack of flour will make 4 plus loafs of bread. That 5lb. sack cost $2.50 on sale. A sack of plain white bread sells for $3.00 a loaf.
    Lets add 4x$3.oo=$12.oo.
When I add the price of the sugar, salt, butter, milk and yeast, That comes to $3.00 my cost for 4 plus loafs of white bread. A saving of $9.00
In the early 1960's My Mom stopped baking her own bread. Wonder bread was less money at the time then the ingrediency she was making the bread from.
Now the bread companies know, No one bakes anymore. Making bread is easy and the touch it time is 30 min. tops. That is 15 min. I cranked the dough hook in the Dough Girl hand mixer. 4 loafs of bread or 60 dinner rolls.
Using the fast acting yeast cut the rise time to just one hour for the first rise and 30 min. in the bread pan. Bake 30 to 45 min. Let cool and enjoy.
Baking the bread in the wood cook stove cost me nothing for power.
    Fresh No, preservative bread.

Thanks for stopping by. I shared 4 half loafs with 3 of my brothers and my 95 year old dad. They enjoy fresh baked bread as much as I do. That bread knife is something I found 30years ago. You see it works great for slicing bread. You can still find them.

Thank you for your knowledge! I just picked up a Dough Girl from a thrift store. However, it didn't come with a recipe. This looks to be perfect to take up to our off grid cabin, I can't wait to try it out. I appreciate the lesson on wood stoves too, I usually use Dutch ovens.

You will have a workout with the dough girl. If you are doing a full batch you will need 2 Dutch ovens or at least make bisques with one loaf and add the rest to one big loaf. let me know how it turns out.

I’m not sure where you live but in my area of northern Minnesota there are Hoosier cabinets on marketplace all the time. Right now there is a wall Hoosier cabinet, meaning it’s just a wall unit no base, it has a flour bin and sifter, it’s only $125. I wish I had a place to put it !!! I could send you a link or tag you on the post if you want (and if I can figure out how 🤷🏼‍♀️)
I love homemade bread, your wife is a lucky lady !!!

I live in Washington State. I can find about 50 within 100 miles of my home. Most look like they have been in a barn or chicken coop. The prices range from $125. to over $1000. The cheaper ones have the metal bits I need if I were to build one my self to fit my needs. But they need serious cleaning and work before Wonderful Wife will let me bring it in the house for use. So I believe I will Make the top part to fit on top of my corner cabinet that The Wife can use. She is the baker in her family.

I think Wonderful Wife would use the Bread Maker, lol. That Golden Brown tops on the bread looks so inviting. This was a good tasting bread as well. Great Job! Thank you.

The best part is, No added preservatives, factory bakers like wonder bread are taking your money because no one bakes anymore.
