Finally a video that understands how to break this down so that it’s easy to understand and fun enough to play. I’ve gone through dozens of these tutorials trying to find a good one and this is by far the best one. Had to subscribe
Im getting one this next week, at the end of Covid; you better keep playing it or i'll catch up to ya, haha. Glad to hear you went for it and got one and that you're loving it!!
@@wheninroamful Practice, practice, practice. Common sense huh... Especially true with the banjo. I slowed down after I switch to the Clawhammer strum.
As a scruggs style picker looking to add a clawhammer stroke this has been one of the most straightforward and clear lessons on clawhammer. Very good!!!
Brilliant. Learned banjo from a vinyl record and book by Pete Seeger just 60 years ago. Been playing off and on through a career in music and entertainment ever since. Picked up the banjo again the other day, shone the strings to record a short movie track. Found your video .. very useful .. wish you’d been around all those years ago. So thank you🪕❤️
I've watched them all and this is easily the best starter clawhammer instructional video here. Informative but not boreing. Like a personal lesson really. This old clawhammer newbe thanks you much!
By far, this is the BEST instructional video I have seen on how to begin learning claw hammer style of playing! Thanks for posting this and thanks as well for your encouraging attitude as well! By the way, I’m 67 and decided to learn old time banjo at last. Yes, following a long time ambition! Wish me luck Steve!
@@StevePlaysBanjo Steve ,?? Why did you loose your voice..?? Some times I loose mine if I try to sing to high or loud in church. If I had a microphone 🎤 I probably would do better,, I don't know... keep up the good work Steve.. make more videos..

For my 60th Birthday (just in time for the quarantine) I purchased a banjo. I have little or no musical experience, so I know that I have a lot to learn. No pressure, but I've chosen you to help teach me. Keep up the great work.

Wow! As a would be beginner i found this extremely informative and helpful. I appreciate the way you broke it down from starting out to what it is like more advanced.
This is genuinely one of the most helpful videos I have come across in my journey with the banjo, thank you so much for sharing your knowledge with the world. I will definitely be watching the other vids in this series :)
This is probably the best how to I've seen for an instrument ever. Thanks! I'm a guitarist and I've always been interested in the banjo.. so maybe now when I'm in a music store I can try some stuff out :)
This video is just perfect! I love how relaxed and honest you convey your knowledge. As a guitar player i know how important those tips (e.g. ignoring small mistakes 'cause nobody really cares) are in order not to unnecessarily complicate practicing yourself at the beginning. Very good job!
Brilliant approach to learning clawhammer, Steve! Wish I had been introduced to the banjo this way. I got my first banjo when I was in my 20s but never learn to play it until I was in my 60s. Ever since it's been a font of joy, learning and expression, thanks to supportive teachers like Patrick C. and you. You've made the journey to learn such a joy and thrill of improvement, Thank you.
I just got a Banjo for my birthday. I’ve played a lot of different instruments in my life but banjo is really my first string instrument. This is probably the best beginner advice anyone could give!
I know I'm late to the video, but I just wanted to tell you, this is by far the best advice I've heard for clawhammer banjo. Thank you. The way you separated the three "pieces" of the clawhammer made this very clear for me. For some reason I was having trouble before this video with using my thumb and finger together
Been watching your "day one" for a week or so. Don't really have a lot of time to put in, but your teaching style fits me perfectly. I'm going to keep watching "day one" until I get it, then move on to other days. As a break, sometimes I'll watch you play songs. ;-) Keep on playing, teaching, and recording. Great job.
Thanks. Great video, Other videos had me strumming nonsense forever. This increases the fun factor by 10, which means I enjoy practicing more, which means I'm getting better faster!
Hi Colin, what songs are you able to play?….I’m about the same time in learning but I spent 8 months or so learning 3 finger before I decided clawhammer was for me. Steve is an awesome teacher and inspiration and if you stick with it his lessons make more sense….there are some easier beginner tutorials so if stuck let me know. Thank you again Steve…you’re changing lives!
I recently found a banjo in the basement of my SO's parents... Guess he used to play guitar, tried the banjo, but it didn't take. So (with permission) I took it. I took it to get it dialed in, and asked him how to choose what style to play (I had just learned there was more than one style) He said to get on UA-cam and listen to the different styles and see what you really enjoy. Steve, you're style is what I would love to accomplish some day. Love listening to your playing...
So much good instruction in this video. Will cover the first year or so of playing many instruments recreationally. Keep playing that tempo and nobody will know you messed up. Took me a long time to learn that...
This video has helped a ton, I came from playing bass and up until this video I've been struggling with not slapping/plucking the strings like I would with bass lmao
i concur with a lot of these comments, this is the best instruction for beginners I've seen. I don't even own a banjo yet but thanks to you that will change tomorrow. Thank you!

Hi Steve, I bought my first banjo today and just finished "Banjo, Day One“. Wow, you’re a great teacher and a big help to me. Although I had no idea how to play this instrument at least it sounds like music now and I’m motivated to practice. See you tomorrow at Day Two. I send you a heartfelt „thanks" from Switzerland.
Probably the best beginner banjo lesson that I have found, and I am ready to take the plunge (have been borrowing a neighbor's banjo). I plateaued long ago on the guitar at campfire-playing level, and further progress just seems tedious. Steve's approach to banjo playing conveys a relaxed and free-flowing approach that strikes me as accessible and enjoyable.
I started with “strike, strum, thumb” and I’m still “stuck” there. I’m going to try backing up and practicing from this perspective to see if that helps me move forward. Thank you for going over the basics with an alternative method :)
When I was first learning (ten years ago) there were several different how-to videos online that helped. They all taught in a slightly different way. The one that helped me break through was a video by Zepp where he put the camera under the strings! After that, I was able to revisit other videos and books with the new perspective. So keep at it! 😊
Great video Steve! Beginners quit or fail because they don’t take the time to do it right. In this day and age it’s ‘I want to play like Bela NOW!’ Sloooow does it. I’m sorry about your cold. If you took some meds, it probably was gone in 7 days. If you took nothing, it probably took a week! 🤣
I say Neo missed a trick in the movie 'The Matrix' by not downloading clawhammer, I know I would if given the chance, although you pretty much made up for this Steve - excellent tuition.
First time to really hold and manipulate a banjo November last year. I wish I could play even just half as good as you. When does one use rolling/picking and clawhammering. I started with rolling and just came across your video. Great work by the way!
I like your strum philosophy. Just strum it. Everybody else starts with boom-chicka-boom. I got frustrated right off the bat and now the banjo sits in the closet. Well now I am going to pull it out and enjoy it now and add the rest of the strum later.
Hey Steve, I’ve been learning frailing banjo for about 4 months now but still can’t get anywhere near to your ability but I fight on. Thanks again for a great lesson.
Keep at it! I think it helps to keep looking at the basics from different perspectives until it clicks. As long as you’re having fun, that’s all that matters. 😊
