Such an odd point in time for John's vocals. Like a perfect in-between of his Niandra vocals and his powerful, strong, second band stint Chili Peppers vocals.
Listening to this makes me realize what Scar Tissue was about. They are just beaten and weathered here. John and Anthony from drugs and Flea from depression. Chad always had his shit together.
And I think Anthony was truly sad that things didn't work out with Dave. Obviously they were elated to have John back, but those guys really did love Dave and he's the "sarcastic Mr. Know It All" who "shares the lonely view" with Anthony in the song.
It's a miracle that Californication is such a good album, because this they seem to be really messed up in this performance... I guess the best bands can get over practically anything.
yeah well john did not have that much strength in his hands when he returned from rehab you can hear some mistakes even on the album and for tony he was probably still using something
according to setlist.fm this show was previous to tibetan freedom concert but whatever, first, second, third... its just one of the first with john, thats enough
err sorry. the first show with john back was during the tibetan freedom concert where the peppers had been given like 15 minutes at the end of the show to play some of their songs (give it away, under the bridge and power of equality) because of pearl jam intention since they were headlining.
It wasn't Dave who called Anthony and threatened to burn his house down, it was Blackbyrd McKnight. Truth is, Dave never really fit in with the Chili Peppers. He didn't have great chemistry w/ them musically, he was a bit of an a**hole, & had his own drug problems, all of which lead to him getting fired. Sure Anthony probably felt bad about how things turned out, but I think they were all relieved to be rid of Navarro & have John back. Navarro wasn't even invited to their Hall of Fame induction.
That's interesting. Dave is actually the one of the people that kept making Anthony go to rehab. He'd go out looking for him and convince him to get help. I know he and Chad had a side project going and Flea even joined Jane's Addiction for a bit. I don't think Dave was an asshole when sober. It was when he started using again that it went truly sour. Now, I do agree that Dave wasn't the best fit for the Peppers, but they all seem to like him as a person. And 9 years later, they've all jammed together. Including with John. Plus he gave John a guitar while John was in rehab, which John then sold for drugs so that's not great, but John regifted Dave one many years later. I don't think any person fired from the Peppers was based on anything personal.
Everyone here listening to obscure acoustic performances probably know the lyrics to Soul To Squeeze. Im just saying no one cares. Haha and I looked at your channel, if you think your twelve year old brain is more capable than someone's in their early twenties I doubt you'd be capable of eating your teddy grahams on your own. If I initially saw you were a little kid I would have dismissed your original comment. I just figured you were a tool, but you don't know any different. My mistake. Let me know if you need me to re-word my comment for you.
+Cameron7 What video did you see? I don't have any drum covers recorded in 2008. If you find some, please let me know. Also, if you seriously think only the age of the brain is a good measure to it's capabilities, you're wrong. If you only gave the brain's age as a measure for either of our's inteligence just because you think mine is lacking compared to yours, it only shows your childish underestimation and troll-like behaviour. It doesn't particularly work in your favor. Also, if you think everybody would consciously like to be represented by your opinion on some comment on some video on the internet about RHCP, you're wrong. Last but not least, I think most kids from Teddy Graham's target audience could write a more cohesive, responsible and mature comment than you proved you could just now. You've been on the internet for too long.
TheTwicey Look sport I don't know where you got the impression that I wanted you to write me an essay about your feelings. You sound smart enough to know I'm not about to go back and forth over a pointless argument with some kid.
23 years later, Flea and John recorded Not Great by Gang of Four again when John was joining the band for the third time.
john plays that second song in an intense interview from when he was addicted, it's so nice to hear it here when he's well
+Alex Blum It's Dave Navarro.

L in his Q and A he talked all about that album, and said he was on heroin for that recording and giggled into the microphone.

Maybe one of the best versions of soul to squeeze. Made me cry!
That first song by flea is good need a finished version.
Love to hear more of Flea’s own material!
13:04 that was beautiful
I've been looking this for years, It seemed to have disappeared. So glad it's back!
first rhcp show or whatever it is with john back right?
this is part of the essential moments in rock history
yes
The harmony in johns voice in untitled 11 reminds me of his 2004 version at the atp festival, just beautiful.
*2005
I was there!
I could have lied was really beautiful
absolutely
17:46 Shit!, it scare me
hahahahaha
It's a part of Me and My Friends... first time I heard it it scared me too xD
this is the first time they play soul to squeeze together, after john came out in the 92, the song become a single... so... maybe...
Yeah you're right. Since 1998 they played this song 312 times
Man, Soul to Squeeze sounds awesome anyway :)
Acoustic bass and guitar.... Love it!!!!
and bongos..
Niandra’s Red Hot Chili Peppers is one of the best Red Hot Chili Peppers ever. And Flea’s songs rule too. I really love this performance.
Holy fucking shit, those songs of John live's something I haven't heard before

Awesome!
Amazing live acoustic Soul To Squeeze in the first RHCP's performance to radio broadcast with John rejoined to band but without Chad Smith
at minute 19:30 john & chad plays a little part of Achiles Last Stand of Led Zeppelin!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! GREAT!!
No, that's from Dazed and Confused live, the TSRTS version
there is no Chad here, he was absent as he was on holiday in Michigan. Probably AK fills in for him on bongos
wow dude, you're right...i am changing the description as i type this.
Wish we could've heard "I've Been Insane!" Wonder why it got cut?
26:47 that bass is so jazzy
Beautiful !!!
this really shows how badly they needed john
It's a miracle that Californication is such a good album, because this they seem to be really messed up in this performance... I guess the best bands can get over practically anything.
Feie Herkes I like the rawness of this. It’s very punk
yeah well john did not have that much strength in his hands when he returned from rehab you can hear some mistakes even on the album and for tony he was probably still using something
Keep in mind that this was recorded with a single microphone at a pirate radio station in an apartment in Silver Lake...
12:33 this is so rare and beautiful
according to setlist.fm this show was previous to tibetan freedom concert
but whatever, first, second, third... its just one of the first with john, thats enough
why these acoustic guitar lines on john's own songs so great
Not being able to play this video isn't normal. But on Meth it is.
I logged out and played it and it worked. i suggest you try loading the video again.

Whoa, what? Is Chad Smith playing the djembe??
He was on vacation
So…. Who plays the percusion?? Perkins?

27:29 "you want a rock nervous breakdown"
19:45 so the line in As Can Be is influenced by Rush's "Hemispheres" album?
Great ear and observation... thats cool
Beat me.

Never really felt like DN was a great guy tbh. OHM is a good album but far from their best.

23:04 Did Anthony sing ''I've had a bad disease'' on purpose? It should have been 'I got a bad disease..''
