This was super helpful, used it to pull a 9" stump this afternoon. I didn't use a bolt through the 4x4, I cut a notch with the Sawzall and just laid the chain across the top of the 4x4. Also, when I had put as much pressure on the stump as I could, I put a 4 ton bottle jack up against the far side of the stump and was able to press it a few inches. This broke it free.
Ignore all the infantile bragging from the overgrown kids saying stuff like "That's not big enough to call a stump" or" I would just use some huge machine costing $ 100, 000" If you are a back yarder with a load of stumps this size and no tractor od digger, this seems like a cost effective and efficient way to get the job done .
This is basically the very best way to pull stumps and how I also do it. But take care, when you don't have struts at your beams to the side, it may collaps.
sweet jesus... You know if you misread the tension at any point or your duct tape security wrap allows the chain to slide off as the stump loses its verticality during the pull and with your positioning the comealong and yourself as close to the action as possible... you're living a charmed life my friend. Next time, at the very least, place the come along as close to the anchor tree as possible so that you are not in the line of fire when your suicidal trebuchet lets loose!
Edgar Alvarado I'm thinking that placing a long metal tube over the come-along handle would let you stand back a good distance while you crank. Thoughts?
Applied simple physics in the era of the electron; glorious!! I’ve been doing these types of tasks “by-hand” most of my 62 years. It’s so delightful to see that increasingly I am far from alone! By the way, don’t you love the sound of roots and limbs popping as they snap??!! I recommend Moving Heavy Things, a thin book full of clever low tech stuff by Jan Atkins(Adkins). m-awa-dawn
Now I'm no professor but wouldn't it make more sense to swap the come along with the tag end of strap attached to the tree so that the come along was lower to the ground and easier to reach. And realistically what you are actually doing is weeding in the woods.. Instead of starting the 4X4 at 90 degrees why not start with it leaning slightly over the twigs your pulling out. This will increase the distance of travel of that come along before you need to reset it.
Actually the bolts taking all the load, if it sheared, that would be a terrible place to be standing. The come along should of been more near the tree, or the post half as tall so you weren't cranking right under the weak point.
This works, but as the vertical post leans over it gets closer to the angle of the chain and you get less and less movement of the stump with each pull of the come along handle. I added a 2 foot 4x4 to the bottom, between the stump and the vertical post. This keeps the stump coming straight up much longer with less work.
Rick, Think of it as L shaped, as the main post pulls the the stump and starts to lean the lower part of the L will keep the stump coming up rather than sideways. Same as using a car rim. Also google a tool called a "Weed Wrench" for a better idea of what I'm talking about. The "Weed Wrench" is expensive, but easy to copy. I made 2 sizes of them as I have lots of Buck Thorn and other small (2 inch and under) brush to pull.
I'd put the come a long about 4 feet high on the tree and not work that hard reaching over your head.. But I'm old and don't waist energy. LOL Lots of folks can use this trick though. Nice job.
Those are very small "stumps". They can usually be quickly removed with a well placed blow from an axe.....but I suppose if you're wanting to remove the roots, your method works well......even if it is time consuming.
There must be a huge amount of tension right at the point, where you're standing beneath that ratchet. I was wincing watching this, waiting for it to turn into a bright idea gone wrong, and witnessing a cable snap or 2x4 slip and something terrible happening to you, like being slashed by a cable or head being smashed by the 2x4. Maybe you can invent something to keep your body far away from that ratchet. It seems like using a chainsaw to carve that little stump and roots out of the ground would be much safer.
well doesn't seem like I can comment so I will put in this reply box.my 4 ton come along is just a cable .and I didn't have to use a post or anything . just a short length of chain to hook up to the anchor tree. you made it to complicated by adding that post.my come along was 25 dollars at harbor freight. .
Those aren't stumps, stumps are a minimum of 18 inches in diameter. Those "stumps" are considered brush where I come from, we drop the Bush hog on them.
Shit, you call that a stump?? When I was in my 30's I'd push and pull on a small tree like that from all directions until the ground came loose around it, then I'd tie it to another tree as high as my hands could reach and hang my weight on the rope. the trick would be to take up the slack and do it again until the whole thing crashed over with a big clod of dirt and roots
+Mike Dunn When you pull a stump horizontally you're pulling all the dirt between the stump and the fixed point along with it. If you haven't yet found and cut all of the roots with larger stumps, it's super difficult to tell with a horizontal pull. With a more vertical pull once the stump starts to budge you can usually tell pretty quickly if there are additional roots you need to cut.
@@mikedunn7795 The root system of a tree is designed to withstand horizontal winds. Just find a small sprout that you can pull up with your hands and you'll see that it takes a lot less effort to pull straight up than to try to pull to the side.
As for those below saying this is dangerous I don't believe there is much tension in anything that he's doing it's just a slow pool out of the ground review his video not much tension I don't believe he is in any kind of danger at all. but whatever
leverage is great especially on larger trees and shrubs. Your winch will pop those little things out with no 4x4 contraption easily. The weak link on mine is the handle. You will bend the handle when you pull large stumps. Some of my roots are as big as your whole stump
For crying out loud get two hooks for your chain quick dickin around with duct tape and learn how to make a choker with your chain but very interesting and useful idea two thumbs up from me also that is not a maul that is considered a mad axe very useful tool for d stumping your yard
Looks easy - NOT. Have tried this. The Tree stumps I've been working with are sweet gums and they have a tap root. So far I've split my 4x4, bolted it back together and pulled a 6" diameter sweet gum (liquid amber) stump. The hardest part of this is hooking the chain to the stump to the 4x4 to the come-along to the tree. Not a real easy single handed project. It does work though.
that's an interesting concept but I simply hook the chain to the stump then to the drawbar on my big green John Deere and say giddy up and that old stump comes right out of the ground. simple, clean and easy. now I know every one does not own a John Deere but that ain't my fault. love that John Deere
Thats using your Brain instead of your back !! But the big stumps you will have to dig and cut some roots before you can finish pulling them out i am guessing !!!!!

Oh I like the notch idea. Seems a little safer.
Holy cow this is what I have been looking for! Great demonstration and info!

he could have used a spade to cut the roots. It would be faster and probably not that hard
A great vid and thanks for dissecting the tools you used.
Creative way to use a 4 x 4 as a lever to pull out small stumps. Thanks for the upload.
The bolt holding the whole load. When it gets fatigued and snaps, he isn't going to be happy.
Beautiful setup. Great tutorial. Really appreciated the material list
Love this solution. Gonna build one of those 4x4 T bars to yank a shrub out. Thanks for the video !
Very good idea, thanks from Nezaland city México
great idea!

ok, but this guy should have the comealong positioned close to the tree and be wearing protective equipment, chains slip, chains break
Thanks. Can't beat those come-a-longs.
Genius! Shear genius.
That was awesome. Thanks

I personally enjoy the challenge more than anything. It's more gratifying, and thanks for the boo tip I will take a look on amazon.
it really helped pulling out the stumps
Great video great technique. Was wondering if you could update the video description with supplies I would need? I would be extremely grateful!
great demo
This seems like it could turn into a "Faces Of Death" kind of video quite quickly.
Sweet pull.
Excellent McGyver!
very clever!

Lol he might also learn the difference between a mall and a madock

Smart idea!

Set the base back 5 foot from the Stump and tilt it towards the stump.
It works better and you won't ever need to rsposition.
Can you please post a picture of the top your a-frame . I want to build but need to see how you did.
Are you using a winch or a farm jack as a come along?
smart dude!
This works, but as the vertical post leans over it gets closer to the angle of the chain and you get less and less movement of the stump with each pull of the come along handle. I added a 2 foot 4x4 to the bottom, between the stump and the vertical post. This keeps the stump coming straight up much longer with less work.
Can you explain more on what you mean - can you post a pic or sketch ?

Nice.
That's "handy dandy" painters tape
Ты крутой парень!😊
What is your chain rated? Any specs?
Would be a little safe with a 4" steel pipe or tube. I've seen the results of wood posts splitting under compression. Be safe
Cool!
Interesting... it looks like the same type of leverage you get when using a hammer claw. Same principle but only bigger scale.
Clever!
Thank you for all the tips, but what did you mean by having to "take another bite"? Your tips will come in helpful soon. :)
This would be easier if you just use a high-lift jack with stabilizing legs with a chain
NOT, a bad idea, Thanks
ты красавчик!
Watched a video of some guy pulling steel round stock with a chain.
No tape required and no slipping.
Matter of how you wrap the chain.
im watching this intensely at 4:am eating a frozen stouffer's.
You don't have a maul there son that tool was a mattock.
When he called it a maul ... hhaaaa I was like no way that is more a pick axe, it looks nothing like a hammer.
A mattock with a pick end would have taken most of those "stumps" in less time than that contraption.
seeing all the comments..I'll just say, IT WORKED !!!!
I'd put the come a long about 4 feet high on the tree and not work that hard reaching over your head.. But I'm old and don't waist energy. LOL Lots of folks can use this trick though. Nice job.
To pull the buttonbush in the pond?
Fuckin death trap
Best thing to use is a pick axe works for everything
less time using my pickaxe, sometimes working smarter is weak.
COOL
Instead of duct tape n notching just drive a ten penny nail to nail the chain to the stump.
Thanks for the video. But I gotta tell ya, I have weeds bigger than then those stumps.
That should be an "A" frame, so it won't go cattywampus on you.
Yea, the possibility of discombobulation is very high.

so glad i have excavators to do this with

great. now can u show me how to make a bird bath out of a ding dong?
Did you really even need the 2x4
hahaha at 1.06 I thought I'd eaten something bad or I was starving!!
I would have just made a flip flop winch
Ive used toothpicks thicker than those "Stumps".
use the sawzall.
Need a Grubber

"hey cory" maybe just tell some crack-heads you lost some dope under the tree & ( WALLL-LAAA ) "no more stump"
Dude I m pretty sure you got A in Physics
Just make drill holes then pour in diesel fuel in each holes problem solve.

Why do you need the 4x4 post with cross bar? Why not just pull horizontally with the come-along?
By having the 4x4 he's pulling up than out without the 4x4 he'd just be pulling out
I don't understand why the stump would offer more resistance if pulled horizontally rather than vertically.

Your MAUL, is actually a MATOX
*MATTOCK*
Thats using your Brain instead of your back !! But the big stumps you will have to dig and cut some roots before you can finish pulling them out i am guessing !!!!!
Story, wrong in so many ways. Come-along is being used backwards and it should be position near the base of the anchor tree.
Those aren't stumps, I'll show you stumps that a 3/4 ton truck and a 2" chain can't even budge. Those are little sticks.
Should of used the truck.
I wouldn't advise anyone watching this to attempt this .....it's shit like you didn't get birch slapped by this stupid contraption
That "maul" is actually an adz.
ToughAncientSpark that Adz is actually a Mattock.
An adze i believe is for hewing timber as in timber framed buildings. Mattocks are used in forestry mostly and landscaping for churning soil.
You are working to hard. Just use that dewalt saw to cut the small trees below ground level. You are done.
