  • Someone has leaked nearly all of the specs on the new Panasonic GH6! I've analyzed the video and official white paper and the GH6 definitely is a beast of a production camera. But is it good enough to bring people back to Panasonic or has Sony won out as the best all rounder?

Glad you enjoyed this analysis! I hear you on that one, when I'm on a cinema shoot I much prefer the feel and performance of the Panasonic, it was magical. But the last project I was on was meant to be a reality TV show with a lot of smash zooms. Couldn't use the Panasonics because I couldn't smash zoom and focus at the same time, thus the movie was shot on Sony cameras.

Oh for crying out loud! The ONLY THING any GH5 user wanted fixed is the autofocus. All the other stuff is nice, but that autofocus is a pain in run and gun situations. I have learned to live with it, but I was really hoping the focus in the GH6 would be their main goal. I would happily keep everything about my GH5 the same and they fixed the focus in the GH6, and I would buy one in a heartbeat.

We'll find out more tomorrow when we see more embargo reviews, I think the AF is probably ok for non-fast moving subjects in video mode. But anything that can be slightly unpredictable might make the Panasonic hunt more versus phase detect systems is my guess. All that being said I really did wish they'd leave the DFD system or at the very least make it a hybrid AF system.

Great pre-view, the AF looks like it could be the achilles heel of the panasonic m4/3 system. And I'd definitely like to see an external ssd option for high data rates as cfexpress cards are so expensive.
The cost will obviously be an issue as FF cameras are available for reasonable money now, so m4/3 needs to be cheaper or offer something outstanding, and that certainly won't be AF, DR or D.O.F. and if some m4/3 lenses arnt compatible, I'd fear for the gh6.

I forgot how great your channel is! l’ve listened to a lot of waffle on the gh6 and you cut through to the important stuff :) I sold my pair of gh5’s a while back when I realised the added flexibility of high ISO performance and nicer images generally on the S5. The linear MF mode is already available for the GH5M2, GH5S and the G9. It was released via firmware update a few months ago. Currently 12 Lumix lenses are supported.

@@TLDR_filmmaker Apparently there is a hardware limitation for the GH5, because it's using and older generation processor, while the G9, GH5S are newer and the GH5M2 is the newest (or the same as the previous two). Either this is true, or Panasonic just wanted to save more features for the M2, which would be also understable as the GH5 is a 5 year old camera which received plenty of fw updates already.

Dude, Great video! So, Canon actually started using something called Dual Gain Output which is actually what Arri uses for the there cameras. This is actually why I am VERY impressed with this camera. The problem with the Canon's is they are rolling shutter so that Jello effect is still there. The Arris use a global shutter so that doesn't have any jello effect. Now, since this is actually a MFT sensor it will most likely not have any Jello effect in this camera. The DR is impressive with this GH6 because it actually has the same DR as the S1H!

Very good and thoughtful review. Thanks so much. I knew you would have good commentary on this new camera.
It really looks impressive. I, like you, like shooting video, and really am a fan of MFT cameras.
The linear focus, pro res, and audio with their XLR attachment, plus better dynamic range make this an ideal camera for my purposes.
    Two things are of concern.
I like to shoot manual focus most of the time. So, first, how good is the peaking?
It's, at best, mediocre on the S1H, and practically useless on the S1---and none of these cameras, including the GH5, allows you to punch in to get critical focus while recording.
in contrast, the Fujifilm X-T4 has state of the art peaking---the best I know of, period, and you can move the focus box, punch in, and achieve critical focus while rolling---anytime. It's fantastic. But fuji has almost no lenses with linear focus.
My quandary would be which to pick, the GH6 or the XH2---a camera I've waited for for a LONG TIME. The XH1 was and remains the most ideal camera body---I loved shooting with it.
From a practical point of view, I'm probably going to buy the GH6, because of the XLR feature for youtube videos. But we'll see. The XH2 won't be shown until a few months later, so I'll have time to think about it.
If the GH6 AF is better it's the top candidate for shooting youtube talking head stuff. I use the S1H and for talking head it's really very good---and the GH6 improves I think there will be little to complain about for filmmakers and those who are primarily video oriented. Just wish the Panasonic had Olympus colors...they are excellent. Which leads me to my last concern: I wonder if the GH6 will have a color science that will match the S!h??? Hopefully, that will be addressed this week.

It is unfortunate. The GH6 with its focus limitation area may work for some youtubers who need it in a pinch for talking heads, but at that point other cameras would still be the better bet for hybrid creators. Panasonic, in my opinion, is just a powerhouse operators camera rather than a self creator camera.

That is the question if there will be a GH6s, if there is... I'm not entirely sure what they would do to differentiate the two systems. Probably more codec options at minimum, not sure if they would drop the megapixels in that sensor, and hopefully they don't take away IBIS.
As for the Card with a wire that comes out, that has some limitations in terms of what bitrate you are recording at. The higher the bitrate it won't be able to keep up because the Cfast B port does not supply enough power to the M.2 SSD. This was confirmed by a couple review. I was sad to see that, I thought a company finally cheated the system haha!

Panasonic still not making a change after years of people wanting a truly hybrid creators type of camera, I think it's safe to say that if people were wanting to switch they can go ahead and switch. For filmmakers that are purely behind the camera all the time, Panasonic is still the best camera for those needs as Sony seemingly refuses to give us more pro-video tools even in a Sony A7Siii... which I'm not particularly happy about, but I can make do.

Hey! It’s been a long time! As someone who used to have the Panasonic cameras like the GH5, GH5s and the S1H and now moved to Sony ecosystem, I’m very impressed with the specs for the GH6. Sure, I do miss the Panasonic video quality, but I’ve made the decision to stick with one mount, which is the E-Mount. I may not go back to Panasonic but I’ll be waiting to see what artists will do with the GH6. I might rent the camera in the future since I still do have few M43 lenses.

However I will be keeping my eye on how the GH6 performs after incoming firmware updates, something tells me they may not have shown everything just yet. Internal Braw would be awesome. But yes, agree with everyone about AF. I know I got dunked on when I was considering switching over to Sony because of AF. It is such a great tool for many reasons and some people just refuse to think a "real filmmaker" would use it. I say a "real filmmaker" uses tools that works for their needs and not fuss about trying to get 10 takes just to get it right, money is tight these days. For me AF works great for narrative scenes where the actors are somewhat confined in a small acting area, with AF they are free to rock back and forth all they want to let their character move. Much more organic of a scene when you let them get into it.

Hopefully once the embargo lifts, we'll finally see if the GH6 solved autofocus. This year could be the year of the crop sensor cameras, but the OM-1 was already disappointing, the GH6 is promising for the most part, Fujifilm dual X-H2 releases would be the last exciting thing for crop sensors for a while. Waiting on the Fujifilm summit in May before I pull any triggers on lens/camera purchases since there is a chance that one of the two new X-H2 models could be a global shutter sensor. If they all disappoint, I might have to end up going with the A7iv :(

Definitely, I think we'll see some promising ish results and another firmware update may get it closer. Really we just need the DFD system to stop Guess Checking so much and use more AI movement recognition. I haven't looking as much into Fuji since their XT-3 I think? I love their color and they do have a lot of things going for it, I think I was waiting for them to give more video centric features. Not entirely sure if I would ever jump into fuji as my primary working camera, but I do want to see them shake up the video market and get other companies to give us more of what we want in a video camera.
Honestly, as much as I love Panasonic. Sony in my opinion is the overall winner because the E-mount system is just not rivaled. The fact they have kept just one mount this entire time across their whole camera lineup makes so much sense why they have the most 3rd party lenses on the market. It also makes your upgrading path in their eco system so much easier.

@@TLDR_filmmaker I was really really hoping that Panasonic was going to figure out how to make the GH6 an L mount camera. Doesn’t seem like it’s going to happen. Even if it’s through an adapter/speed booster similar to how Canon made adapters for their new mirrorless line.
Being able to use L mount lenses on the GH6 would be fantastic because you could finally mix and match their camera systems. I prefer a full frame look, but I’d definitely be interested in a m43 for other things if I didn’t have to have a whole set of different lenses.
If Panasonic did that, and maybe even figured out their own version of the drop in ND filter adapter like Canons, it would do so much to unify their system the same way Sony has with E-Mount.

@@TLDR_filmmaker Totally agree. Fujifilm feels like something in between Panasonic and Sony. Like they realize their mistakes and they're trying to implement more video features, but they have a lot of catching up to do especially in terms of autofocus, and lenses. I hope their next generation is much better. The current quirks are similar to the A7iv, like a crop in 4k60p down to 1.77x crop factor, or 1.94x with Digital IS Boost (similar to Panasonic's "handheld tripod" mode). I'm currently testing the Viltrox speedbooster to see if having a parfocal Sigma 18-35 is worth the sharpness loss.
I can't bear to leave Fuji, especially after seeing how close Fujifilm can look like a Black Magic in terms of colour and rendering. While Sony may not have my favourite colour out of camera, but if I'm going to use something for work, I think Sony has a rather neutral look that is easy to grade. The issue with the a7iv is that I pretty much need both APS-C and FF zooms as a hybrid shooter which means carrying more lenses. That is making me second guess a move to full frame.
I'm also keeping an eye out for the 3rd gen Nikons where I think that's where they will start shining, just like how Sony only took off from the 3rd gen. The new Z9 processor can bring some crazy magic and the affordable f/1.8 primes look great.

      @Trevellian 2 роки тому +1

Yes. The less compressed codecs like Prores, Braw, and all-intra formats require less internal processing, so use less battery and create less heat. But they do create larger files needing more storage.
Most modern cameras are even capable of saving full uncompressed video raw. Why don't they? The most logical reason is market segmentation. Protecting their higher priced cinema cameras.

Matt Frazer of Panasonic has mentioned in the past that recording to XQD and CFExpress cards causes a lot of heat, which is one reason the Panasonic S1 doesn't record prores internal (despite having an XQD / CFExpress card slot). My smartphone can output RAW video. Not for long, and not at maximum resolution, but it can do it.
And with USB 4.0's 40Gbps, direct writing to NVME SSDs would allow 4k 60 raw and more. But again, none of the major camera makers with the exception of BlackMagic permit USB saving.

Frazer is usually a straight shooter, but that Prores heat comment sounds a bit like marketing spin. CFExpress, XQD, and SD cards all use the same NAND flash chips. And while the process of writing to them does create heat, it's all just data for the chips. They don't get more hot when writing one codec over another.
It's possible that flash being written at its maximum sustained bitrate might get slightly hotter. And some of less compressed ProRes codecs do have higher bitrates. But if that's what he's saying, it wouldn't prevent Panasonic from allowing the use of the lower bitrate ProRes codecs on cameras like the S1.

If they can figure out a way for it to just trust whats going on and get close enough until the subject stops or slowed down in the frame, it may be good enough. If I never started youtube, I probably would have never switched to Sony, but alas I like the flexibility of the AF for me to freely move around compared to my old videos where I looked trapped.

Its mindboggling to think, that panasonic STILL cripplehammers their amazing cameras with this dumb autofocus... yeez... why the heck do they stick so stubborn to it? Its literally the ONLY reason Canon and Sony are completely taking the field... why panny? Your cams are amazing, why cripple them? WHY?

The autofocus has gotten pretty good on Panasonic cameras. It might not be as good ad Sony but Panasonic also had a lot better stabilization and less rolling shutter.

@@CheapCharlieChronicles i know, i have started filmmaking based on a GH5 and loved the thing. The issue is, that its very inconsistent, it cant be trusted, and it rly. struggles in shots with little or fast movement. For me its just absolutely not understandable, why panasonic wont just add in a few phase detect points to make a hybrid af that would solve all the issues.
Rolling shutter & IBIS are currently exceeded/matches by Sonys a7s3 (in „active“ mode). Yes, its more expensive, but also Full-Frame, better Lenses and so on…im NOT a Panasonic hater, quite the opposite, but they hamper their cameras so heavily by this, it blows my mind.

      Hey hey Everyone!
Thanks for checking out the video and engaging with each other in the comments!
At this point I think it's just safe to say that Panasonic is only going to focus on DP's who are behind the camera primarily and operating it, Canon is going to be more photo centric on their non-cinema lined cameras. Sony will be the best hybrid content creator / cinematographer camera but will never give you the video exposure tools that Panasonic gives, even though it is so easy with a software update. As frustrating as this is, at this point Sony knows it's winning the market because they went after the largest group of people, youtubers and live streamers. Panasonic either doesn't want to really enter that space or there is some long term DFD vision they are trying to reach but technology hasn't caught up to it yet for us to see what its truly capable of.
Either way, if AF is a tool that someone needs, they gotta look elsewhere for now.

I feel it is. The only things that are required is generally C4k and high bitrate uncompressed recording formats. The C4K requirement in my opinion is very odd as netflix has plenty of shows in UHD 4k for delivery, weird.

Sadly, yes :( . But I do have some hope when we see a couple firmware version later. Because of the internal high sensor readout, we may get closer to a "usable" AF but probably still not a sticky as Sony or Canon.

RED is definitely up there in price range, once you get into that tier of cameras's its most likely you are working in a much larger production team that either contain an off site CGI/VFX house. Otherwise I would say that Black Magic is probably the cheapest cine-level camera out there, the quality and features they have at that price is killer. If I went back to MFT as my primary mount, then the GH6 and BMPCC 4k makes sense (I need IBIS for some action sequences).

No DFD is there. Maybe means no. Phase detect even if you have to steal it from someone. Hey Sony, Canon, heck even OM labs. Daft Focus Detect. Keeps from me wanting one. Contrast Detect in 2022. I here what is old still is. Panasonic disappointing result. A camera with so much more more intelligence. Computational photography maybe? What are these guys waiting for. MFT could kill it if Computational photography is used, you know like smartphones.

Agreed. I think at this point Panasonic is only wanting a camera that is strictly for camera operators and not for hybrid creators that move between self filming and film jobs. This unfortunately kills their potential market that they created with the GH3 - GH5. At this point everyone has moved over to Sony and some to Canon that are hybrid creators, which is a large large market because of youtube and live streaming.

That's a good point, unless they have a really efficient processor in the camera to handle the megapixels, it might not be able to handle much. MFT is getting to its last leg it seems, even though I think its the best cine camera sensor next to the APS-C. Full frame is nice and all, but I don't believe its the end all be all.

@@TLDR_filmmaker Excellent video and channel, I agree that m43 has advantages over full frame. Full frame isn’t the only way. However, I think (but could be wrong) that it is likely impossible to produce a m43 sensor with the 33-35mpx of resolution necessary for 8k. Even if it is possible, the pixel density of an m43, 35mpx sensor would be insane. Unlike anything we’ve seen in the industry so far and image quality would likely be poor.

    • @TITAOSTEIN
      @TITAOSTEIN 2 роки тому

I think the only limitation is technology. Sensor size has nothing to do with it. I believe we will see 8k even in smartphone sensors, which are much smaller.

    • @johnvanderploeg
      @johnvanderploeg 2 роки тому

@@TITAOSTEIN possibly, but there is a limit to how small you can make a sensor pixel. If you extrapolate the density of a m43, 33mpx sensor to full frame you would have a 125mpx full frame sensor. At that density, the noise would be bad on a full frame camera. Even if m43 can accommodate 8k it won’t be ideal. I think APS-C has a brighter future than m43, but if you are a hybrid shooter looking for a future proof solution, full frame is probably the way to go.

Before I've even watched your video... My opinion... The GH6 is 2 years to late to mean anything - not enough to justify itself... The dynamic range trick it does is a gimmick. No low light. No 13 or 14 stops dynamic range. I give up on Panasonic. We're still gonna be craving better low light. ISO 2000 is trash for daylight... Don't cuss me out... But I'm in this for the image quality... Bmpcc4k it is - I don't care about AF. After watching your video... Lol... No change in opinion... Not that you were trying to convince me - but overall... Panasonic just ain't even considered catching up to what's out there - low light, dynamic range, auto focus, raw... Looks like they tried to go sideways. A7S3 is what the GH5S was.

The old style on the channel was extremely frantic in the first 30 seconds, the past few months I have started trying to condense my review videos without a crazy TLDR section. Reason being is that youtube is finally punishing me for having viewers leave after 30 seconds. Whenever I do a video that is a deep discussion piece like camera analysis or creatives philosophy, I take away the TLDR because there isn't a way to relay a depth of complex multi vantage point information without completely confusing the viewer.
