I’ve Always loved Pete…and ALWAYS will..one of the most brilliant men in the last millennium..writer..poet..musician..novelist..playwright..I think he surpasses men like Mozart..Beethoven etc..all they did was play the piano..for him to play everything on the quadrophenia demos has always amazed me..I don’t think enough people have thanked him enough for what he has given us in his life..well I thank you Pete..tytytytyty..your music and words got me thru some very hard times…
Pete is the man!! He is fucking brilliant. So much of his music is the soundtrack of my life and I am a huge Steely Dan fan, but always find my way back to Pete, his voice, the songwriting, the guitarist wow just wow
Not only a great musician, but also a clever man who, unlike most aging rock stars, has the courage to admit the arrogance of his early career and the difficult path to responsible adulthood.
To me, there will never be another Townshend; his myriad accomplishments could undoubtedly fill a library. From my 60-plus years on this planet, he has only one equivalent: Sammy Davis Jr. Now more than ever, the lyrics to "Won't Get Fooled Again" echo constantly in my mind for his timeless vision and condemnation of hypocritical government, yet conclude on that hopeful note that defines Pete's essence, even if it wasn't always "pure and easy" for him or those who helped him along the way. The day he passes, I expect musicians worldwide and everyone else in England to salute the brilliance he contributed. I pray I go before him.
As a huge Pete Townshend and the Who fan I love listening to his interviews. His outlook in life and the role of music has molded him into a truly unique category of a musician. The man is a musical genius. Long Live Rock!
Fascinating interview - home-recording musicians today have it so much easier than Pete did... having to install mains-filters to keep out the electrical "clicks"? That's dedication :-) Trivia: the "baby guitar" Pete is seen with from about 2:55, was built for him by the great Danny Ferrington in 1980.
Such a fascinating person. I immediately moved to his solo work when the Who stop making albums. All the Best Cowboys Have Chinese Eyes was my first purchase. I know every song, word, tune by heart of that album….incredible album. Naturally I bought Empty Glass straight way. Then White City, Iron Man….all great albums. My fav woukd have to be Deep End.
What a jewel this video is. And what a song, "After the Fire." I wish this version was available somewhere. It is so very different from Roger's masterful take on it. The emotion in Pete's voice is shattering.
He speaks english eloquently, he gives selfless charity, plays multiple instruments, engineers, edits prose, etc. and you compare all that to kanye west or beyonce. He towers over them so immensely that its like comparing a symphony to a set of broken wind chimes.
Greetings from the great state of Texas USA amen I agree with you 100% dismantle Legend the who was a legend Pete Townshend is gorgeous always was gorgeous his wife's very blessed to be married to him so many people are poor and homeless in our world life is not fair regardless of how much a person try some people will never achieve much financially materialistically but God doesn't care about any of that he cares about the Eternal not what we gain in this world
My first home recording studio was in 1993, an 18 year old punk. Tascam 424 4 track cassette recorder, ART FXR effects unit, Shure SM57 and the next year bought a Tascam DA30mkII DAT recorder. McCartney & Stevie Wonder were my "one man band" influences originally. Then when I met my wife, then girlfriend, who turned me on to the Who's catalog much deeper than I originally had known (I mean every rock fan worth a fuck is going to know "Won't Get Fooled Again", etc.). Quadrophenia hit me like a ton of bricks. Then reading a few articles on Pete I learned he was like the original home studio cat. He used it to write, played drums and keys, etc. That was what glued me to Townshend forever. He influenced me & many others without us even knowing it. I'd think "Man those Who tracks are so tight", then I learned Townshend demo'd every song and then brought it into the band, arrangements and most parts in place already. A true genius.
i cant lie i never saw to highly of pete i always thought he was a uptight prick but im not sure i cant leave here seeing this with the same idea of him.... we all have our problems... hes quite a beautiful person in his own right... its very inspiring for me and my music.
greetings from the great state of Texas USA what you mean he seemed always to be uptight I don't understand what you mean by that this man's a legend he was good-looking and still is just gorgeous
he's such a tech geek. he can ALMOST make it seem interesting. great fragments--that's alright mama is awesome. thanks for uploading. & o to have access to the stuff he's got stored in that studio~
greeting from the great state of Texas I always thought they sound similar I was one years old and they've made their first album hard to believe I am 53 years old now Pete Townsend was gorgeous and so is gorgeous simply gorgeous man his wife's a lucky woman how blessed Rodger Daltrey was gorgeous still is kind of reminds me a little bit the hair of Robert Plant is all these men are secular though sign their souls to the devil for fortune and fame the music industry's of the occult in the Illuminati everybody knows that just to the investigation it's really sad and it's not worth it God bless
This was not let w the other stuff (you may call the who), because although same camera person, she is Kathi- we didn't want the otr producers to overburn! It's a gift from Steve, we understand how that fxns.
The South Bank Show was, might still be, a weekly arts profile show made by London Weekend Television and hosted by Melvyn Bragg. I worked at Bravo, the cable network, back in the 90s when Bravo was showing operas, ballets and foreign films and we had the U.S. license for the South Bank Show.
So, then, ... the parts don't fit? Do thank HRH for the writ of St James Palace ... kind was the LIW's regard. Back to TWEEKING the theme, and meters envolved. Get at it !! pip pip
can you feel the words I am sending you before dear one let's see what happens after the fire playing on a bach organ in the arc of angels yes a sailing vessel on the south and north atlantic ocean just one of those grazy ideas but who knows ? it might work love and peace in harmony to it's life natural sound tidal waves Roy van Zadel💙🤍💛💚❤

I LIKE MIKE
What a humble self deprecating bit of insight on such a brilliant musician. No ego and addresses the needs of the needy how can you fault him!
Pete is the man!! He is fucking brilliant. So much of his music is the soundtrack of my life and I am a huge Steely Dan fan, but always find my way back to Pete, his voice, the songwriting, the guitarist wow just wow
Wow. My two favorites too. Who and Dan. In that order. Dan when I'm feeling perfectionist. Who when idealistic.
Always
Ditto, Pete and Steely Dan… that’s all I want played at my celebration of life.
I often come back to Pete's music for whatever reason. I never noticed how in time he is. He's really got fantastic timing.
As a bedroom studio musician and composer I find Pete quite an inspiration.
Not only a great musician, but also a clever man who, unlike most aging rock stars, has the courage to admit the arrogance of his early career and the difficult path to responsible adulthood.
Shows you just how creative he is

Seeing that home studio brings back memories. I had a 6 track 1/2 studer with a few preamps/EQ's, no console. Life was easy.
13 years ago. Still awesome.
"And then I have one track left. Which I will use to swear at you." Best line ever

How is this relevant in any way? This is just as cliché and pandering as the Bieber comparisons you find on every 60s and 70s song
he also is a devotee of child porn. DOn't forget that
That's crap, and you know it.
Darin Strauss let's hear it for kiddie porn! go Pete. he was probably just checking to see if he was in any, groupies you know

I see a Revox A77, used that for bouncing one track to the other while adding things. All this old stuff, stunning!!!
Pete is the most talented musician of the 20th century.
I think you'll find that's Paul McCartney.
Ahum, Jared Leto anyone?
he's such a tech geek. he can ALMOST make it seem interesting. great fragments--that's alright mama is awesome. thanks for uploading. & o to have access to the stuff he's got stored in that studio~
Pete bustin out a joint in the office, atta boy
It's not a joint, it's an Indian cigarette called a beedi.
a generous man!
The music of Elton John introduced me to The Who and later Pete Townshend when he performed 'Pinball Wizard' on 'Tommy - The Movie'.
Luv you Pete!!! 😇
wow that's great!!! mooooore!!
thanks for the upload. it's really nice! :)
Vile man,
Why was this documentary never shared before when it was produced ?
it's crazy how influential townshend is, if there's anything in rock pete townshend probably did it first and still doesn't get credit for it.
I like Petes voice better than Roger Daltrys.
