What really makes the monsters in Cry of Fear terrifying are the animations and sounds. Their looks, if you consider them a picture, aren't that scary or unsettling, but the way they move and emote in general elevate the fear you feel to the next level.

Imagine making a FREE mod back in 2012 and having it be an effective and compelling horror experience that rivals some of the better AAA horror games. This game is literally a poorman's Darkwood (that is a major compliment btw) Now imagine paying £15+ on a stupid "ooga booga *loud noise*" horror game and then people turn around and say that they're great horror games. Is kinda a shame that one of the most noteworthy scares in this game is a jumpscare though.
@@crispypeepohole69 jumpscares can and have been used effectively plenty of times - not often in the last decade or two of horror, sure, but to say that they're ineffective and inferior in general is just silly, especially when the game you're praising up and down has jumpscares up the wazoo.
@@DracXBelmont I never said they were ineffective, I said they're inferior because it's cheap and low effort just to make something pop into existence and run really fast at you or make a loud noise. It's not organic or smart horror, and that even applies to the good jumpscares, only the setup can be smart. Going back to my comedy comparison, it's like having an incredible build up for a joke and then you just tickle them for the punchline. Most of the time, there is no actual threat to a jumpscare, you can usually see them a mile off, and because you can usually see it coming and there is no threat, it doesn't even matter what is trying to scare you as you only need to give a damn about when. They never make you question what you saw (except "what the fuck was that?", which doesn't count as the answer doesn't matter) or if you actually saw nothing and your mind is just playing tricks on you. Jumpscares are literally just sneezes, you have a small amount of build up, it happens, you go "well damn" and then nothing, because there is nothing afterwards, it doesn't mean anything.

I feel there came a wave of unwarranted hate toward Cry of Fear due to when Vinny from Vinesauce played it a while back. Now I like Vinny, and the vinesauce crew as a whole, but he was so unfair to the game after about the midway point or so. Probably didn't help that he had played Silent Hill 2 recently and was seemingly weighing CoF in comparison.
@@StuberTheUber Feels like the semi-boomers just hate it for seemingly no reason. Unfairly comparing it to triple A, high budget horror games, when CoF is a free mod made by basically one person.
This game is one of my horror-favorites, but damn that last level is tough with the limited inventory, platforming from hell and the dodging in the final fight. I prefer that to ending 4, though (the "good" ending). The way you "finish" the game is so brutal and makes you really uncomfortable.
The sound design in Cry of Fear is so unique. Its cheap but extremely effective, with all the screams being just distorted enough to sound very loud and sort of realistic, as though the monsters are really howling loud enough to clip the microphone.
The soundtrack for this one is killer as well! I never played it but I had the entire soundtrack on a spooky music playlist years back. The Sawrunner theme is a highlight
i love the story of the game , the struggle that Simon have to go through , his mind is in pain to the point even a normal person looks like a monster that is trying to kill him.
Now remember, Cry of Fear is made in Gold Source. And many other games from this time is made in Source. Being able to make a game run and look like this in Gold Source is quite amazing.
Best horror game ever made in my opinion. Simon and his story was really dark. Monsters were terrifying. This one will always have a special place in my heart
this was such a good mod. one of the best ever HL1 mods. Irionicallz, I played that while I was myself in depression and I can see how this can push some people over the edge. Also, these Sonz Ericsson phones... the pure nostalgia, ahhh....
Cry of Fear was the first horror game that caused nightmares during my childhood. It was so scary to the point where almost every modern horror game felt bland. The fact that this was free made it even better.

Your cat is supercute. Also Cry of Fear is a masterpiece which I've beaten over 10 times so far across these years. I absolutely love the sheer passion that went into making the project, I pretty much know everything about the game at this point.
This game is absolutly LEGENDARY in germany. There's a let's player here named Gronkh, real name Erik Range, he's one of the biggest personalities on german youtube. He played the game and things went up from there.
The beginning of this is hilarious because my brother was working a job where they treated him like shit and also nearly crawled back to working at dominoes.

Actually I like Afraid Of Monsters more when it comes to creepiness. it has that more creepy vibe than Cry Of Fear, the outdated graphics, how the flashlight works with battery, and especially those Twitchers monsters, and the sickness level. Cry Of Fear in the other hand, has more intresting story and characters, which also cool and creepy as well, but it doesn't creep me as much as Afraid Of Monsters did. Still both is my favorite HL1 mod/game
I remember when TheBatesee did a play-through of this game back in 2017, did a video going into detail who Simon was and that bonus Dr. Purnell level as well.
This game is very unfair and tedious at parts though there is large chunks of boring backtracking it is a good game and does a lot really well but in the end I was pretty frustrated with some design decisions
@@DarkLordFluffee Pathologic 2 doesn’t have half as many shitty design decisions and I don't like the backtracking in Pathologic either if I recommend that game to others I will surely mention the tediousness of it with it
Same here, I'm also not the biggest fan of the combat. While it does suit the panic-inducing style of the game, making you feel just powerful enough to not be helpless but limiting your effectiveness so that you never feel safe, It's just not my thing. I like to feel like a quick-shooting cowboy taking down foes in dead space, and I like feeling like an ant picking a fight with god in Shadow of the Colossus (and some parts of Dark Souls), but the shooting and movement in Cry of Fear is just a tad uncontrollable and unresponsive, making me unsure and uncomfortable in everything I do. While not every game needs to be a power trip, feeling uncomfortable is never my thing, even if I recognize it can be a good thing for the game.
@@LawkzBro Haha, I actually take your feedback as compliments. The game is meant to make you feel uncomfortable in some ways. But of course, there were many design flaws and decisions that I plan on fixing on a new update for Cry of Fear. Called 1.7. :) /Andreas

Mentioning Zombie Panic, Zombie Master, and Hidden all in one video earned a subscription. I spent probably a literal year of my life sunk into those games.
This is my favorite horror game. It means alot to me, at the time when I fist discovered it, I was sad and depressed. I felt like it had the right atmosphere to relate to how I felt, not saying I was being attacked by horrible creatures, but Simon, the mood, the setting, it all felt so strong to me. I felt like I wasn't alone anymore. Other than that, I really enjoyed the story and it's gameplay. 12/10.
You might want to add hypersensitivity to loud noises to the list. The game is best played with forced loudness equalization, otherwise you run the risk of damaging both your ears and your speakers. The voices are hushed and the game is very quiet until something decides to scream at you. *And you definitely shouldn't play this game if you have exaggerated startle response.* This game doesn't clear its throat before saying 'boo!' if you catch my drift. TL;DR: *Expect ungodly levels of earrape.*
I use the enemies in this game as a standard when playing other horror games. They are so creative and visually/conceptually well designed. They give me real sense of Cosmic horror which is hard to do. The Flygare, Drowned, Human Flower, Faster, and Carcass Boss are my absolute favorites.
3:43 the mentioned solution is a glock tactical light which exists in a basement floor of an apartment. The apartment locates between ronald street and preston road bus
You keep on comparing it to Outlast saying it goes "even farther" than Outlast but provide literally no examples at all. Where are those examples that make Outlast look tame, the game that shows necrophilia, rape, and castration?? The one scene of the dude sawing a dudes head off? That happens every 5 seconds in Gears lmao. The way you're hyping it up and the gameplay being shown does not add up at all imo.
CoF isn't really about spectacle its about stress and ambience and in both of those it's better then Outlast, + CoF has actual gameplay mechanics and not just running and hiding.
@@Grandmaster-Kush And how does that ambience make Outlast look tame? And also what ambience? You can't really build an atmosphere when you're being attacked literally constantly, which he mentions in the video. And what are those "actual gameplay mechanics"? Because you can shoot a gun? If so, thats no more valid than running and hiding as a mechanic, if anything its less valid because its a horror game. You know what completely gets rid of any ambience and makes things less stressful, having guns to shoot down any monster. That's not scary at all. This game is cool for a super low budget free indie game but comparing it to Outlast is ridiculous.
Ya this was my impression honestly. And the enemy design seems kinda uninspired, just a sorta Silent Hill 2 ripoff. His review didn’t really seem to cover the hype.
Fun fact one of the devs of this game formed a depressive black metal band called Intig probably my favourite dsbm band out there, really guys check them out
The game is good in a lot of ways but the combat just feels kinda trash, your own attacks and everything the enemies do just feel too speeded up. The games Cry of Fear lists as inspiration all had much slower combat and were better for it.
If you're wondering why your cat is doing that, its because its eyebrow whiskers tell it that something is above it, so its stuck ducking under something that isn't there, because the costume is making it feel like it is. Same as when you push their cheek whiskers back. Its like antenna for determining whether the rest of its body can fit through a small hole or not.

@@StuberTheUber Feels like the semi-boomers just hate it for seemingly no reason. Unfairly comparing it to triple A, high budget horror games, when CoF is a free mod made by basically one person.
@@vahlok1426 what the fuck is a semi-boomer you petulant child
I love vinny and I can respect that we don’t always have the same opinions
If you want a more indeapth look at the story look up “who is Simon” by thebatesee.
Im so glad someone else still acknowledges his channel
this here, that summary is so awesome
*sits in chair*
Thebatesee..
*grabs a ciggarette and smokes it*
Haven't heard that name in years
I still miss him ;_;
@@hatcrab4923 me too.he kinda introduced me into scps
That video is best of best
This game is one of my horror-favorites, but damn that last level is tough with the limited inventory, platforming from hell and the dodging in the final fight.
I prefer that to ending 4, though (the "good" ending). The way you "finish" the game is so brutal and makes you really uncomfortable.
The sound design in Cry of Fear is so unique. Its cheap but extremely effective, with all the screams being just distorted enough to sound very loud and sort of realistic, as though the monsters are really howling loud enough to clip the microphone.
This spooky games series is being so good so far. Thanks for making them, Charlatan Wonder.
Love this game, glad to see people are still talking about it
The soundtrack for this one is killer as well! I never played it but I had the entire soundtrack on a spooky music playlist years back. The Sawrunner theme is a highlight
i love the story of the game , the struggle that Simon have to go through , his mind is in pain to the point even a normal person looks like a monster that is trying to kill him.
this is the best.... i love it when cry of fear gets the recognition it deserves in horror titles! its seriously amazing and deserves the praise
Now remember, Cry of Fear is made in Gold Source. And many other games from this time is made in Source. Being able to make a game run and look like this in Gold Source is quite amazing.
Watched a walk through on the game years ago, I hope MrGSTAR321 comes back to UA-cam
Something that I feel a lot of people don’t appreciate or talk about is how fantastic the soundtrack from Cry of Fear is.
I remember Batesee's video on this game. Hope he's doing well.
Good old Batesee. I’m certain he’s going well whatever he’s at.
BUt to me, my amazement that dedicated fans can create such a great thing was kinda what made me want to continue living. That and the prospect of HL3 on the horizon at that time. Also, these Sonz Ericsson phones... the pure nostalgia, ahhh....
Cry of Fear was the first horror game that caused nightmares during my childhood. It was so scary to the point where almost every modern horror game felt bland. The fact that this was free made it even better.
a swedish depressed boy that has such a strong mind of sadnes and negativiti that everything he sees wether it be feelings, people or mental illneses or his way of seeing himself, everything is just so broken and hostile twords him
Your cat is supercute.
Now this is a channel that brings back the non toxic era of UA-cam. Subbed
The beginning of this is hilarious because my brother was working a job where they treated him like shit and also nearly crawled back to working at dominoes.
The boat part in cry of fear is still so cool its so fitting after all the gruesome events that you play through.
Might play this, It's always interesting when I see a fellow Sweed do stuff
And I grew up not really knowing that we ever did stuff in this country
So, thanks for the heads upp
this really gave me quite the nostalgia trip
i miss the days of cof multiplayer, zombie panic, and the other various horror games on the source engine
Ah yes, was playing this and the lights went out
That door sequence at the beginning ruined me when I was younger, what a masterpiece.
Afraid of Monsters scared me like no other game.
Yeah. The crappy Gold Source flashlight that only illuminates the surface which you directly aim at, didn't help much either. ;D
This game is very unfair and tedious at parts though there is large chunks of boring backtracking it is a good game and does a lot really well but in the end I was pretty frustrated with some design decisions
you have a pathologic icon, boring backtracking and frustrating design decisions should be a feature for you lmao
Called 1.7. :) /Andreas
@@EA45 Cry of Fear is my favorite horror game of all time, I can't believe that theres still more stuff to come, just want to thank you for the memories this game gives me
I played for 16 minutes back when I was 14. I haven’t played it since, and it’s been over 4 years.
I think I remember pewds playing this back in the day

@@Wildknives69 Gonna be honest, he was never really any good. Though I will put an exception for his minecraft videos
Mentioning Zombie Panic, Zombie Master, and Hidden all in one video earned a subscription.
I spent probably a literal year of my life sunk into those games.
Who came back here after pyro Made a 2 hour video this game
Zombie Panic Source, Zombie Master, The Hidden. Sir you just blew me back to my youth just by dropping these games, good times!
I remember Grey was out around the same time and I wanted to play it too. I don't remember how it was received though.
It had a pretty "meh" reception from what I remember though I could be wrong
@@datguyuno98 Grey was pretty good. The Ending sucked tho.
also underrated channel. Spent the last two days benching the reviews and enjoyed every single one of em.
Random dood: lol that game wasn't even scary whatever lets play it im bored
10 mins into the game*
Gets jumped by 2 zombies
AAAAAAAAA
The way the monsters move was really scary
I wanna see how you enjoy Lost in Vivo
This is my favorite horror game. It means alot to me, at the time when I fist discovered it, I was sad and depressed. I felt like it had the right atmosphere to relate to how I felt, not saying I was being attacked by horrible creatures, but Simon, the mood, the setting, it all felt so strong to me. I felt like I wasn't alone anymore. Other than that, I really enjoyed the story and it's gameplay. 12/10.
3:35 spoiler:
it's called brightness settings
Ah yes, because what better way to ruin the atmosphere of a horror game than turning up the lighting? 🙄
@@cannibalisticrequiem it's called sarcasm, Karen.
dude this game scared the shit out of me years ago, still does.
Nice cat
Nice cat
Watching this video made me reminisce of Batesse's let's play of this game and then made me miss the guy,I hope he's doing well
You might want to add hypersensitivity to loud noises to the list.
I saw pewdiepie played this game back in college oh the time. I could never bring myself to play this game eventho my pc is good now
Throwback to when Jerma985 and Star_ played this and got jumpscared in the stairs. Good times
Lmao
I recommend playing it when you have depression, because lmao helped me to play it like this
the google translate is very noticeable?
very noticeable but i can still understand
Its not too bad. Hellblade helped me when I played it with depression.
@Daisuke Young being depressed doesn't make you a psychopath lmao
@Daisuke Young stupid comment
@Daisuke Young what the fuck is this
The hidden was soooo good! I played a ton of that mod. Loved the map with the server rooms and glass
Hearing how your old company is suffering brings me joy. Guess those creative types weren't so bad after all.
The Giant Bomb video of this with Vinny and Patrick was *hilarious*.
Throwback to watching pewdiepie play this years ago fuark
Eric Rachinsky Yes and in the older version of this game (not from steam) he’s actually mentioned as an Easter egg.
Very happy this game wasn't forgotten. This game scared me so much
The multiplayer campaign is far from scary since you can just make fun of everything with friends
Because apparently there's no such thing as different opinions and subjectiveism.
Also multi mode and doctor mode are automatically set to nightmare. It's possible to solo the multiplayer campaign but it's hella hard.
3:43 the mentioned solution is a glock tactical light which exists in a basement floor of an apartment. The apartment locates between ronald street and preston road bus
I liked the graphics and atmosphere, but the level design of this game could be some straight garbage at times
The gun wielding enemies are actually called suiciders, sometimes upon death they straight up shoot themselves.
@Toxic Potato he's not incorrect
His review didn’t really seem to cover the hype.
two different games with different gameplays
Fun fact one of the devs of this game formed a depressive black metal band called Intig probably my favourite dsbm band out there, really guys check them out
The game is good in a lot of ways but the combat just feels kinda trash, your own attacks and everything the enemies do just feel too speeded up. The games Cry of Fear lists as inspiration all had much slower combat and were better for it.
I beat outlast and it’s dlc and screamed six times but cry of fear has made screech like a little girl an uncountable amount of times.
The cat in the beginning of the video scared me more than any horror movie has done in years
Even though it wasn't a good work environment it's still really cool that you chose to stick with making videos.
Yeah, don't think he is but I'm sure he's grateful for the unsolicited advice from a pedantic twit who thinks he's accomplishing something with his condescending "help".
@@cannibalisticrequiem wut
