    Russian way of wood framing is very detailed and almost like carpentry. Very neat and systematic. I also noticed when they installed the windows it was on the inside which means the window sil is outside. It is the opposite in the US and Canada, the installation is outside and window sil ends up on the inside

      Remember that this was in Russia, or FSU. Cheap to buy the wood. Their found AZ tion was very little cost. The floor was a bit overkill. Built their own wall, and roof trusses. I have seen people build as this on the second floor of a house, as decking over the first floor, and raising wall, and roof as like Trusses. Seems to have very high ceiling, and heat loss ? I would have made it wider, and less high. Ir framed a lot, decked it off, and then did as they did, but not as tall, and had two real floors. But maybe thi sz is a summer home. As in the FSU many people had summer homes out in the country, or on some water. So it does not have to be as big as their year round home. That Metal roofing sure seems to be way more work to install, as so many layers of strips, as water proofing, strips, and more strips, and water proofing, and then the metal. Well the metal sweats easily, and it may rot the wood easily too, if theres not enough air between it, and the actual roof ply. If it was me, I would h AZ ve done assault shingles instead. But maybe they get lots of snow there, and this slides off the metal at a angle easily, as compared to the asfault shingles. As simple to put the tar paper down or the plastic vapor barrier on the Roof ply, and nail The asfault or 3 tab shingles down, and done. But the metal is cheap way to do it, but lots of space wood strips, for ventilation, and if any screw holes leak a bit, it's only going to rot out the strips, and not the roof ply instead. Once you have it all stripped, and spaced, its quick, and easy to put the metal on. Now days we have much better, and or nicer metal panels. They even have some that looks like sheets of Roof tiles, that come in metal sheets, with a texture, and color, and when done, the roof looks as a tiles roof, but much cheaper. Dont go to small in your house. As it's easy to make it bigger, and not much more cost. As you are just adding a bit more lumber to make it wider, and or longer. If you make the ceiling high, make it high enough to add a loft area for your master bedroom, as it's cheap square foot to build. As in their build, I would have done that to go maybe 10 or more feet wider, and taller to gained enough height to build a loft bedroom in the rear. Using maybe 1/2 the rooms space above for your Master bedroom, walkin closet, Bath, and Have a open living room with high ceilings where it comes out onto this deck.

  • @lightspeedguru
    @lightspeedguru 2 роки тому +15

    Nice build. I only see a couple of issues with it... I love that they treated the beams but I didn't see them treat the OSB they used to hold up the insulation from beneath. Depending on the climate zone they're in, moisture could rot that out over time. A much better solution would have been to drop in sheets of the same metal they used for the roof and siding... but the big issue I see is that they seem to have used house wrap as a air/vapour barrier on the inside of the wall assembly. House wrap is a weather resistive barrier (WRB) and NOT an air/vapour barrier. This might have been mitigated by using a latex paint over mud and drywall but it looks like they used plywood instead so I'm really curious to know what their ACH rating would be. I see that they even made the effort to tape the seams on the inside but a WRB doesn't stop air flow so this was pointless. The correct thing to do would have been to use poly sheeting instead. Something I thought was interesting was the absence of any sheathing or lateral bracing to prevent shear forces (aka what prevents the frame from falling forwards or backwards?) and then I see that they used plywood for their internal wall decoration which provides this... nice!

    • @christopeller
      @christopeller 2 роки тому

      Hi Kris. Good comments. Question regarding WRB and poly sheeting: would you use house wrap on the outside and poly on the inside? thanks

    • @lightspeedguru
      @lightspeedguru 2 роки тому +2

      @@christopeller Yes. The purpose of house wrap is to shed bulk water should it find its way behind the protective cladding. This is part of the protective layer of the wall assembly. Poly is commonly used as an air/vapour barrier. We call this the control layer and it always goes on the 'warm in winter' side of the thermal layer (aka insulation). The poly is typically placed across the face of the studs after the insulation batts have been installed and you should tape the seams to ensure that no air can get through. This is not the only way to build a wall but it's the most common. Search up 'The Perfect Wall', the REMOTE wall system or the PERSIST wall system for alternatives but they will all follow the same rules. The problem with using house wrap for this is that it is actually made with tiny holes to allow moisture to pass through should it need to escape the wall assembly. These holes are too small for bulk water so if rain gets behind your exterior cladding, it just runs down the side... but they will allow air and water vapour to pass through so they don't protect your wall from the warm moist air generated from within your home. Hope this helps. :-)

    The evalution of the thermal performance and energy demand of the building shows that it is possible to achieve a 40% reduction in the heat losses, compared with fixed internal gains and improved solar gains. It is POSSIBLE ALSO to obtain important reduction in the fuel consumption. Additinally the recycling of an existing building also allows an important saving in the costs, as well as the economic advantage of building under the profection of the existing roof in the cold climate with high reimfall.
    Finally, the restoration of a regional wooden building with an acttractive arhitectural character avoids the impact a new structure in the area of outstanding natural beauty.
    Thank you for effective presentation for one exp. for webinar of Green & Solar aspects for civil engineer!

      Зря Вы сарказмом отвечаете. Комментатор то прав. Этот дом очень недолговечен и ненадёжен для капитального строения. Фундамент на винтовых сваях, а тем более завинченный на малую глубину, поведёт на морозе и дом вместе с ним. Лестница терассы опмрается на несколько шлакоблоков и другим концом на дом - её тоже поведёт через пару лет. Утепления в 100мм очень мало. Нужно 150, или даже 200мм, чтобы не топить улицу.

    It would be great if this architect could collaborate a self build house kit business with thus design as it might be marginally cheaper done in bulk so that customers could pre purchase specific set-ups with a main company that also checked land areas in the customers vicinity.
    Could be a very lucrative business venture when combining all the elements and materials in a Package program, 🤨🤔😃

    Only criticism would be the lack of any continuous insulation across the timbers. Cavity insulation is great, but each timber is a massive thermal bridge, and there's nothing stopping them from transferring heat. Cavity insulation alone has been the standard for a long time, but newer research into energy efficient exterior envelopes has shown how important creating a thermal gap really is, even in mild climates. But if no one's living in this little hours full time, the extra climate control costs are probably insignificant.
