Considering how most of Luffy's fights throughout the series start comical and transition to serious, this is just another amazing example of that no matter how much One Piece changes, the more One Piece it becomes.

@7740 yes. that what i was thinking. people take drugs to feel better and be able to take their stress out. their motivation rises and they genuinely feel good after taking said drug. it just happens its the perfect fruit for luffy(like blackbeard going around and giving himself and his crew the perfect fruit which fits them. he can be himself more). an example would be when people take drugs to be able to study and work more. or when you go to the doctor with a problem and you get a drug to help you with said probøem. another example is not whats happening to luffy but to understand it easier. its like taking steroids and work-out. the results ends up far better. but it has side-effects which gear 2, 3, 4 had. gear 5 is the same. it takes too much energy. untill luffy learns to control gear 5, he wont be able to escape its side-effects. but gear 5 side effects arent as serious as the others. especially gear 2 which was said he is literally taking his own lifespan because he hasnt mastered it. but gear 5 has more ups. the downside is just controlling the energy out-put and getting used to that form. which makes his base stronger. the best example would be when saiyans go super saiyan. its very hard to control. but mastering it makes your base stronger. at the same time makes your saiyan form stronger and as you can see in cell saga. goku and gohan can use it without it taking their energy. they got so good at controlling and mastering. it was the same as being in base form.
Also: Gear 5th grants him one type of freedom he always wanted. The freedom to know he's strong enough to protect his crew without having to almost bleed out/being super tense every time he fights a strong opponent. He reached one goal that he had after he realized at Marineford that they are not up for the challenges ahead
I think the gag based vs Power based scheme was something I noticed but didn’t put into words . It’s definitely intentional, because whenever it is a pure damage move, opponents rarely even have a chance to fight back
Joyboy lost before so I continue to think that Imu and the Gorosei have "anti-Nika" techniques and tactics. They have to know how to defeat the Nika powers. They probably aren't foolproof or hard counters but something to let them fight the imagination powers.
Good points about why Luffy was holding back due to the effects of his gear 5. Cause the first time Luffy threw Kizaru when he could've effectively ended the fight right then and there made no sense to me, but I now fully believe what you said about Luffy fighting off his emotions in the moment when he's in gear 5. He makes these illogical fighting decisions cause he's just too high on joyful emotions and just wants to have fun.
I think whats needed after this arc is luffy introspecting how he feels when hes in gear fifth and how it can be detrimental to a fight and possibly get him into more trouble
It’s never gonna happen. This is literally a goofy pirate manga and Oda likes to have fun and not be so serious. Pay attention to the story and the author instead of making up stuff
"It is the dream fruit" Okay but also, Bonney's fruit qualifies a dream fruit too. Can you imagine if someone with Luffy's unshakeable confidence had her fruit? She can imagine any future she believes in, and Luffy has been imagining impossible futures from the very beginning (sometimes literally impossible as he got his ass kicked). He could have made himself a giant with it too, could have invented rubber powers if he imagined them, or any other kind of powers. The limitation of Bonney's fruit seem to be a person's inability to truly believe in certain future, but in Luffy, that liimt is almost non-existent. This would be insane too.

I wouldn’t say holding back, more like not dialed all the way in. Luffy’s heartbeat is also louder now than ever before, further emphasized by the ancient robot getting more and more powered up. Luffy is still getting stronger, at this point I think even fresh Kaido would lose to him
His fight with kaido highlighted his advance conqueror's haki so "MAYBE" his fight with kizaru and saturn is the highlight of his awakening , to the point of extent his able to teleport because teleportation is theoretically means able to "BEND" space and time and we all see his awakening affects almost all things around him
i got the impression gear fifth nerfed Luffy's focus right away. As soon as gear fifth was revealed I got the impression that for Luffy, gear fifth was like being on drugs of some kind.
Luffy looked like a straight up serial killer when he had both Saturn and Kizaru in his grasp. The terrifying and excited grin he had on his place just spelled “You just f*cked up” 😨
I don’t think Luffy has been holding back. My theory is that Luffy has been unable to fully control what is Nika’s will. We were told allegedly that Zoan’s have a will of their own. Awakening manifests this will. Oda said through Vegapunk it was remarkable how unchanged Lucci is in awakening, and by extension Kaku who was represented in the same fashion. But he didn’t do so for Nika, who we can see clearly changes Luffy’s affect and manner, in ways that drive the plot. Luffy couldn’t remain serious and fully focused while in the form. Saturn seems to be rather primal awakened, not even speaking since. Luffy in this chapter showed the first sternness, and his eye changed suggested a change of will. Oda is likely adding new layers to the ideas of fate and destiny in OP. Nika actually manifests himself in Luffy while awakened.
What about White star gun ? It feels like a power move but Luffy was in a gag mood. Maybe its a last sec power move since he knew he was about to detransform?
I am convinced that the weakness Luffy has to even cutting happens cause he imagines himself to be made of rubber. I am sure that if he thinks that he can put himself back together after being chopped up, he would be able to do so The mood nerf however is actually a bonus imo. It keeps Luffy lighthearted and creative even in worst situations. Prevents him from becoming a narrowminded angry god
That's how we avoid the "Gear Death" allegations. Hell it'd be hilarious if Oda to make a scene where Luffy, in G5, gets angry enough to do full body Armament and in a sense "becomes Gear Death" only for it to be turned into a gag soon afterward.

I definitely think Luffy has way more to show. I still wanna know if he has a more angry/flame inspired form of gear 5th like some cover art or theories suggest. I think Joyboy's Will is largely just having fun, but deep down their is a rage set against what the 20 kingdoms did to him and his friends. Joyboy may normally just want to have fun, but they may also want payback after 800 years
I think the fruits goofy nature will might've been why the original Joyboy failed. Maybe he was overwhelmed by the Zoan's will and couldn't take his decisive fight seriously enough and lost. Also I think eventually Luffy will unlock or reveal a gear 5.1 of sorts where he will go full flame mode with it. I feel like it makes sense, he's the Sun God because he's going to bring the dawn yes but with hints of Luffy using fire for so long I feel like it stemming from the fruit and being saved for his final fight would make a lot of sense

This is actually great for powerscaling. Luffy’s power being limited by what he can imagine means that Luffy and every other character in one piece are all outerversal because Luffy can imagine any level of power and his opponents if they can clash with him (like Kaido’s Drum Dragon) are the same tier.

It's funny how it's a common question in power scaling vs battles to ask about "are they in character?" and "are they bloodlusted?" To distinguish what a character would do vs what they could do in the scenario, and here's Gear 5th being the embodiment of why those questions matter for such hypotheticals.
I don't like the idea of a vengeful luffy. It would be cool if he starts getting vengeful and becomes weak. It could be Saturn's plan all along was to be cold and anger luffy knowing if hes not having fun he is much weaker. His fight with Kizaru wasnt very fun and that seemed to lower his stamina more then normal. Saturn barely saying anything and being super short and serious could be the best defense against luffy.

Imagine Luffy launching Saturn into space. Luffy has "out-of-parked" opponents into nowhere in the past, and I'm sure that at Gear 5th he can easily break the 18K mph needed to launch someone into space if he wanted to. Y'all remember this trope, that I believe One Pieve even does sometimes, where an opponent is launched into the air with a twinkle to signify it. What if that is the literal explanation of the "Saturn star" we can actually see in our sky, but for One Piece? That would make sense why any planet farther than that would be an ancient weapon.

I think you're spot on. For his G5 rage form I also think of anime EH episode w the food, where it looked like G5 but w red hair. And the cover art of Luffy w fire hair. Maybe when he's really pissed he gets red flame hair or something? And for him having unlimited power, VP keeps saying similar things like Buster Call is nothing for him etc. makes it feel like he is invincible. But I see one big issue w G5 having Luffy be joking until something really bad happens: is he gonna need to wait for someone to potentially die to get serious every time? I think the best way to describe how destructice Luffy could get is when he becomes on the same level of craziness as from The Mask (not the movie) comic Mask has looney toons powers but he is very psychotic and is using his powers as gruesome as possible.
I think luffy is going through phase of gaining full control on gear 5. Gomu-Gomu no mi is basically Hito-Hito Model Nika. Just like with any Zoan fruit awakening, personality of fruit takes over you (This is what i believe state of Impel Down demon guards are). Once luffy gains control over fruit awakening, mostly gear 5 state will stop being goofy unless Luffy intends to.

I love this idea, it makes so much sense that it’s his emotions that dictate his fighting powers rather than pure imagination, like if it was pure imagination with no limits he could’ve imagined a gun that can just destroy his enemy’s like people thought he could because when he was fighting Lucci he made goggles out of his hair, but the emotion limit being that he will start in a good mood is a perfect limitation, being good enough to make the fights entertaining and not making them quick, while making when he gets serious and or mad hit that much harder.
Just wanted to reiterate that Luffy doesn’t have the dream-dream fruit. It’s not like anything he imagines, he can do. It’s that his rubberiness and ability to affect other things with rubberiness is so vast that he can do an insane amount of new things with it. The better your imagination, the more options you have essentially. For example, Katakuri doesn’t have the future mochi fruit. He has the mochi fruit, which when in conjunction with future sight, let’s him act in a way that looks like the mochi is reacting to things in the future. Likewise, Luffy had the sun god nika fruit with its insane rubber abilities, but it’s LUFFY’s imagination that expands its capabilities. It’s not that the fruit itself is the dream fruit or imagination fruit or anything.
One thing I notice Saturn just "unlocked" another form in his awakening. Sanji thought this dude seems a little bit different, and his appearance changed too. Maybe even an awakened mythical zoan have another "form" like Saturn? Maybe in the future Luffy kinda transform too.

I think that this may be PARTLY correct. It does indeed feel like he is unconsciously held back by his mood in Gear 5th. At the same time, however, I don't think that's all of it. I believe that a large part of it is the same thing that has held him back throughout the entire series. Let's use Gear 2nd as an example. Since it doesn't require the use of haki to implement, he technically could have used it all along. So why didn't he use it against Axe-Hand Morgan, Buggy, Arlong, etc.? Simply because the potential to do so had not yet occurred to him. Likewise with Gear 3rd and his various attacks. It's my belief that the same thing is happening with Gear 5th; the potential for all of the things it can do just haven't occurred to him yet.
Nope. I disargee. The thing is: "creativity is intelligence having fun". And yes of cours, intelligence and luffy in the same sentence is weird, but what I want to state, is that the wackiness and the desire to just have fun and a good time, makes him so potent. It's a fakt, that if you do something you love and which makes you happy and enjoy your life, you always gonna accomplish the most. And I think, thats the philosophie which Oda trys to tell us, with Nika. Fun and enjoyment is the most powerfull force. I rarely make comments but I was high while watching your video and I decided somehow to share the following stupid idea: Your video ( which is very great) makes me imagine a parallel situation in real life. 😅 When you are facing a problem, and you use all of your effort and energy to find a solution, but you fail. Once you take some weed, your mood changes, you awaken the 5th gear in you , you start imagining things, you can laugh at stupid things, but then you get serious about your initial problem, you use this new power and you somehow manage to find creative and tricky solutions.
I don't agree for the fight vs Kaido. When Luffy uses his awakening for the first time, sure he's not serious, but when he uses it for the second time, you can see him thinking about Tama, Pedro, Momo and everyone he knows in Wano, and this before Barjang gun. Kaido and Luffy were fighting toe to toe and very seriously, launching a salva of attacks and responding with another attack until the two of them, in a desperate attempt to end the fight, decided to see who was able to release as much power as possible to surpass the other... People really need to comeback to this fight, Luffy was way more serious and angry than what people think.

I think it’s interesting that it’s Kizaru that is kinda cementing the tone of gear 5 fights, because he is a bit of troll character too. He’s not funny trickster like Luffy, but he definitely messes around a lot and people get away because of his lack of focus. But Kizaru can be absolutely terrifying and broken if he was all business and out for blood. He was the bane of Luffys existence on the battlefield in Marineford after all, sending him flying across the battlefield, crushing his progress. He could wipe out the whole crew now if he wasn’t so conflicted with his ties with Vegapunk.

I don't think you can scale ANY persons power. At least not vertically. You can say a Flame Fruit can't produce ice, but you can't say that a Flame Fruit can't produce a flame of a certain intensity or size. And all that can be amplified by will- which also doesn't seem to have a true limit.

Joyboy lost before so I continue to think that Imu and the Gorosei have "anti-Nika" techniques and tactics. They have to know how to defeat the Nika powers. They probably aren't foolproof or hard counters but something to let them fight the imagination powers.
I think the only Anti-Nika power I see so far is Blackbeard's Darkness Fruit.
Based only on what we've seen, I agree but I think we'll see some as the fight with Saturn goes on.

Good points about why Luffy was holding back due to the effects of his gear 5. Cause the first time Luffy threw Kizaru when he could've effectively ended the fight right then and there made no sense to me, but I now fully believe what you said about Luffy fighting off his emotions in the moment when he's in gear 5. He makes these illogical fighting decisions cause he's just too high on joyful emotions and just wants to have fun.
I think whats needed after this arc is luffy introspecting how he feels when hes in gear fifth and how it can be detrimental to a fight and possibly get him into more trouble
if bonney joins the crew (at least temporarily), there will be a conversation about what gear 5 is and how it works for sure

She can imagine any future she believes in, and Luffy has been imagining impossible futures from the very beginning (sometimes literally impossible as he got his ass kicked). He could have made himself a giant with it too, could have invented rubber powers if he imagined them, or any other kind of powers. The limitation of Bonney's fruit seem to be a person's inability to truly believe in certain future, but in Luffy, that liimt is almost non-existent. This would be insane too.

I don’t think Luffy has been holding back. My theory is that Luffy has been unable to fully control what is Nika’s will. We were told allegedly that Zoan’s have a will of their own. Awakening manifests this will. Oda said through Vegapunk it was remarkable how unchanged Lucci is in awakening, and by extension Kaku who was represented in the same fashion. But he didn’t do so for Nika, who we can see clearly changes Luffy’s affect and manner, in ways that drive the plot. Luffy couldn’t remain serious and fully focused while in the form. Saturn seems to be rather primal awakened, not even speaking since. Luffy in this chapter showed the first sternness, and his eye changed suggested a change of will. Oda is likely adding new layers to the ideas of fate and destiny in OP. Nika actually manifests himself in Luffy while awakened.

I think the fruits goofy nature will might've been why the original Joyboy failed. Maybe he was overwhelmed by the Zoan's will and couldn't take his decisive fight seriously enough and lost. Also I think eventually Luffy will unlock or reveal a gear 5.1 of sorts where he will go full flame mode with it. I feel like it makes sense, he's the Sun God because he's going to bring the dawn yes but with hints of Luffy using fire for so long I feel like it stemming from the fruit and being saved for his final fight would make a lot of sense

Luffy’s power being limited by what he can imagine means that Luffy and every other character in one piece are all outerversal because Luffy can imagine any level of power and his opponents if they can clash with him (like Kaido’s Drum Dragon) are the same tier.

It's funny how it's a common question in power scaling vs battles to ask about "are they in character?" and "are they bloodlusted?" To distinguish what a character would do vs what they could do in the scenario, and here's Gear 5th being the embodiment of why those questions matter for such hypotheticals.
I don't like the idea of a vengeful luffy. It would be cool if he starts getting vengeful and becomes weak. It could be Saturn's plan all along was to be cold and anger luffy knowing if hes not having fun he is much weaker. His fight with Kizaru wasnt very fun and that seemed to lower his stamina more then normal. Saturn barely saying anything and being super short and serious could be the best defense against luffy.

Imagine Luffy launching Saturn into space. Luffy has "out-of-parked" opponents into nowhere in the past, and I'm sure that at Gear 5th he can easily break the 18K mph needed to launch someone into space if he wanted to. Y'all remember this trope, that I believe One Pieve even does sometimes, where an opponent is launched into the air with a twinkle to signify it. What if that is the literal explanation of the "Saturn star" we can actually see in our sky, but for One Piece? That would make sense why any planet farther than that would be an ancient weapon.

I think you're spot on. For his G5 rage form I also think of anime EH episode w the food, where it looked like G5 but w red hair. And the cover art of Luffy w fire hair. Maybe when he's really pissed he gets red flame hair or something? And for him having unlimited power, VP keeps saying similar things like Buster Call is nothing for him etc. makes it feel like he is invincible. But I see one big issue w G5 having Luffy be joking until something really bad happens: is he gonna need to wait for someone to potentially die to get serious every time? I think the best way to describe how destructice Luffy could get is when he becomes on the same level of craziness as from The Mask (not the movie) comic Mask has looney toons powers but he is very psychotic and is using his powers as gruesome as possible.

I think luffy is going through phase of gaining full control on gear 5. Gomu-Gomu no mi is basically Hito-Hito Model Nika. Just like with any Zoan fruit awakening, personality of fruit takes over you (This is what i believe state of Impel Down demon guards are). Once luffy gains control over fruit awakening, mostly gear 5 state will stop being goofy unless Luffy intends to.
This addresses the "can gear 5 fights have tension" question in a really satisfying way. Even more hyped for future gear5 fights now.

I love this idea, it makes so much sense that it’s his emotions that dictate his fighting powers rather than pure imagination, like if it was pure imagination with no limits he could’ve imagined a gun that can just destroy his enemy’s like people thought he could because when he was fighting Lucci he made goggles out of his hair, but the emotion limit being that he will start in a good mood is a perfect limitation, being good enough to make the fights entertaining and not making them quick, while making when he gets serious and or mad hit that much harder.

Just wanted to reiterate that Luffy doesn’t have the dream-dream fruit. It’s not like anything he imagines, he can do. It’s that his rubberiness and ability to affect other things with rubberiness is so vast that he can do an insane amount of new things with it. The better your imagination, the more options you have essentially. For example, Katakuri doesn’t have the future mochi fruit. He has the mochi fruit, which when in conjunction with future sight, let’s him act in a way that looks like the mochi is reacting to things in the future. Likewise, Luffy had the sun god nika fruit with its insane rubber abilities, but it’s LUFFY’s imagination that expands its capabilities. It’s not that the fruit itself is the dream fruit or imagination fruit or anything.

I think that this may be PARTLY correct. It does indeed feel like he is unconsciously held back by his mood in Gear 5th. At the same time, however, I don't think that's all of it. I believe that a large part of it is the same thing that has held him back throughout the entire series. Let's use Gear 2nd as an example. Since it doesn't require the use of haki to implement, he technically could have used it all along. So why didn't he use it against Axe-Hand Morgan, Buggy, Arlong, etc.? Simply because the potential to do so had not yet occurred to him. Likewise with Gear 3rd and his various attacks. It's my belief that the same thing is happening with Gear 5th; the potential for all of the things it can do just haven't occurred to him yet.
Nope. I disargee. The thing is: "creativity is intelligence having fun". And yes of cours, intelligence and luffy in the same sentence is weird, but what I want to state, is that the wackiness and the desire to just have fun and a good time, makes him so potent. It's a fakt, that if you do something you love and which makes you happy and enjoy your life, you always gonna accomplish the most. And I think, thats the philosophie which Oda trys to tell us, with Nika. Fun and enjoyment is the most powerfull force.

When you are facing a problem, and you use all of your effort and energy to find a solution, but you fail. Once you take some weed, your mood changes, you awaken the 5th gear in you , you start imagining things, you can laugh at stupid things, but then you get serious about your initial problem, you use this new power and you somehow manage to find creative and tricky solutions.
I don't agree for the fight vs Kaido. When Luffy uses his awakening for the first time, sure he's not serious, but when he uses it for the second time, you can see him thinking about Tama, Pedro, Momo and everyone he knows in Wano, and this before Barjang gun. Kaido and Luffy were fighting toe to toe and very seriously, launching a salva of attacks and responding with another attack until the two of them, in a desperate attempt to end the fight, decided to see who was able to release as much power as possible to surpass the other...
People really need to comeback to this fight, Luffy was way more serious and angry than what people think.

I think it’s interesting that it’s Kizaru that is kinda cementing the tone of gear 5 fights, because he is a bit of troll character too. He’s not funny trickster like Luffy, but he definitely messes around a lot and people get away because of his lack of focus. But Kizaru can be absolutely terrifying and broken if he was all business and out for blood. He was the bane of Luffys existence on the battlefield in Marineford after all, sending him flying across the battlefield, crushing his progress. He could wipe out the whole crew now if he wasn’t so conflicted with his ties with Vegapunk.

I don't think you can scale ANY persons power. At least not vertically. You can say a Flame Fruit can't produce ice, but you can't say that a Flame Fruit can't produce a flame of a certain intensity or size. And all that can be amplified by will- which also doesn't seem to have a true limit.
