Not too much wrong with my 2005 Tundra. The paint is peeling off the wheel wells & roof. I just had to replace the windshield wiper transmission, & the tailgate handle. My tire sensor light stays on, despite all the tires being aired to specification. I've heard that is a common problem. I bought the truck last August 2020 with 180K. It is immaculate inside. The previous owner installed a fancy radio, with Bluetooth, backup camera, & it plays DVDs as well.
I'm very happy with my purchase, & look forward to putting my own miles on it. You didn't mention any specific major problems with my year, which makes me really happy!

@@bufallobiff when I repainted, the truck had some minor body damage of dents, scratches, dings, etc. I was teaching scuba to Boy Scouts and it had made a few trips through the woods and had its fair share of parking lot damage. I paid a body guy around $600 to fix the body work and then I sanded it with my orbital sander and hand painted it in a bed liner paint called Monstaliner. Did it in my driveway for $500....with a textured roller. Truck has 313k miles now. After looking at new F-150’s and new Tundras, I’m just going to keep it.

Ok, so to manage these things, it sounds like the takeaways are: Plan to replace the leaf springs (easy); Inspect for frame rust, keep the frame clean (esp in winter) during ownership; Replace the stereo? If these are the reasons to avoid an entire vehicle line, prospective Tacoma owners should roll over to the Wrangler forums where their idea of a "reason to avoid" a model year includes: Failing heads, blown rear main seals, defective main crank bearings, cracked and leaking oil cooler and filter assemblies, and so on. I love the Toyota perspective -- don't buy a Tacoma because of rusty leaf springs..... ba hahahahaha ha. Jokes aside, this is a great analysis and provides excellent perspective about what constitutes serious issues in Toyota-land --- step outside the Toyota bubble, and these issues start to look pretty manageable.

All you need to do is call Toyota give them your VIN number and if your truck is on the list they’ll replace them free of charge. The sudden acceleration was taken care of when i took the truck in for service. All they did was cutout part of the carpet underneath the accelerator pedal and that was it. As far as the stereo goes i replaced mine shortly after i got the truck and therefore no issues here.

This video was not what I was looking for. I wanted to know why offroaders are preferring the Tacoma over the Tundra. Yet I'm glad I found this page. I have been a Tundra owner since 2007. I've modified my Tundras. Yes that was plural. The first year the new 5.7 Tundra came out I bought it site unseen while coming back from Arkansas to Huntsville Texas. Based on only stats. Come to find out years later that the 2007 model was completely unrestricted. Meaning full throttle in all 6 gears. This thing was unbeatable against every other stock truck on the market. Yeah I tested it every chance I had. I was told that the new 2007 model was unrestricted to gain popularity. OH and it worked. Years after that 1st through 3rd was restricted and a speed limiter was added. I'm trying to remember all the ones I had. 2007 2x4, 2013 2x4, 2016 4x4 (wrecked), 2013 2x4 (used) then the 2019 4x4.
On the 2016 4x4 I helped K&N develop a cold air intake and did a flash tune on it. IT WAS FAST AS HELL!!!. The 2019 that I currently have I was given a cold air intake from K&N to test. It still needs a flash tune. I'm waiting on the developer to right the tune. My only problem with these trucks was wheel alignment problems. I had to have them re-aligned often. other then that I put almost 100,000.00 miles on it before trading it in. XM radio antenna was in the wrong place on the 2007 but quickly relocated it in future models. I hope this helps someone.

The secondary air pump failure issue was due to moisture being drawn into the intake system. Their solution was to place a baffle over the opening to the intake inside the passenger side fender. My daughter drove mine in a torrential downpour rainstorm once. A few days later, it would turn over, but not start on me. But, it seemed to go away. I got lucky in that it must not have drawn enough moisture into the system to cause the secondary air pump to completely fail.

Got a ‘04 tundra SR5 Access 2WD TSS with 4.7 V8. Drive it up from Louisiana to Massachusetts. Also with no body rust, and the frame is in excellent condition for its age. Definitely plan on putting some work into it. Would love some recommendations.

I have a 05 Toyota Tundra with 260K miles. The only problem I've had was a chipped rear axle that caused me to have it rebuilt 3 or 4 times, at a cost of about $400 each time. We finally found the defect and replaced the axle so hopefully it won't happen again. Other than that, the truck has only had normal stuff to deal with - so expect it to last my kid for the next 4 years or so. Oh - only other thing is the door check broke off from the driver door, which I think is a common Toyota problem. I think it will be worth a few hundred bucks to have something welded to the door, so I don't lose it in a big wind....

You won't sell many trucks if they don't break down. To survive and compete in the retail market as a whole, you have to calculate, adjust, and maintain a balance between reliability and sales numbers. i.e., AS long as you need and will purchase an upgrade every 100k, i'm not going to half my profits by building a truck to last 200k.

My 2009 Toyota Tacoma: Bought it brand new in summer 2008, still driving it with 294,000 miles, still runs almost as good as new, never had any problems with corrosion on it or anything else. The problem with his reasoning is assuming that a recall issue affects all or even a majority of the vehicles subject to the recall. There's a good chance any given vehicle will be fine. And if a vehicle from 2005 to 2013 is still on the market and running well, you can be relatively comfortable that the recall was not an issue with it.

I know this is an old vid, but my 2011 Taco TSS Pro Series had a bad vibration on the passenger door at about 55-75mph. I bought my truck new with 115 miles from the lot. Several people advised that it may have been the way the wind hits a gap on the window. 8 years later, the bolt on the u-joint on the front drive shaft finally snapped while I was driving. My rear wheels spinned out which caused the dropped shaft to bang around under the truck busting a hole into the 4wd transfer case actuator and causing damage to my muffler until I came to halt. Later the mechanic fixing my truck said, "if you had gotten that bolt on the u-joint fixed, your $3000 job would have only been $100." Moral of the story: Learn from my mistake. Check the vibration and assume it's a loose bolt. Look for it!

The only issues for the 1st gen tundra are the Lower Ball joints & tailgate hatch. I own a 2005 Limited Double Cab 140k & a 2003 Extra Can SR5 with 284k. These trucks are bullet proof. Just replace the timing belt at around 100k and the lower ball joints with OME parts & they should easily last over 400k with regular maintenance.

your problems with tacomas and tundras will not necessarily appear until your well over 100,000 miles. Actually, let me rephrase that because most vehicles tend to have issues after 100k miles. The Tacoma and tundras will maybe experience an issue around 150k to 250k miles and we are only talking about major issues. If you are someone who really cares about the longevity on these trucks and you so happen to hit every service cycle with regular oil changes and keeping up on the fluids then you could potentially have a truck that runs 250k to 500k miles before it actually dies out. The trick is following up on maintenance and not when you feel it's necessary to do such maintenance. These trucks have a good reputation due to the fact many owners have adhered to advice from people who have actually made it with tacomas and tundras up to half a million miles with just simple maintenance and replacement parts when they hit certain maintenance cycles. I just hit a deer that came out of know where with my 2008 trd sport Tacoma in speedway blue. The truck's paint is fading on the hood and roof and it is nicely broken in for a used Tacoma and I plan to attempt to restore it to how it originally was before the first owner bought it. My truck is damaged from the right side bumper to the fender flares, to the kick panel to the right corner panel. All of these parts will be replaced but the deer didn't damage the frame or integrity of the truck to my knowledge because I am still driving it. It's still going, no leaks or anything after the collision. So that tells me those plastic parts have done more to protect my truck from further damage and i am grateful. Thankfully my insurance will cover all damages and I will be sure to make sure the body shop corrects everything and be sure nothing from here on out hits my truck. It was my first time hitting a deer and I will be sure to be more vigilant even though these animals do things like that out of nowhere. In addition to let you guys know i own a 2008 trd sport double cab in speedway blue which was a Toyota custom color at that time. Its a rare find in my trim and cab size with that color in my state. I plan to drive it til it cant drive no more. Its my baby and i will make sure its taken care of. I hope to get maybe 10 to 15 more years out of it. I have currently 190k miles on it and that's just after break in on these trucks for milage. Its got many years to come.

Yes they have. I have experienced that with almost every ford i have owned. Manual and automatic. Left ford for dodge ram and have been very satisfied. Needed bigger trucks for hauling and towing. Now I have a 19 ram 2500 and don't like it. Was going to get a tundra but was way more expensive but I now know why now. There just more reliable. My next truck will be a tundra. Wish the tundra back in the day was a full size. I would have made the switch then. I am seeing more and more tundras in my area Can't wait to see what they do with the new tundra.
