I love to watch this man play these Goldberg Variations over and over❤! His extremely long fingers bounce among the keys, while you see-sometimes hear-him sing the notes with joy, sometimes with seriousness, but never hitting the wrong key! He is an unusual marvel!!

I first heard this Glenn Gould performance on an LP in 1954. Later I got to meet him after a concert at the UW/Madison in the 1960s. There he was introducing us to some contemporary Russian composers. Some of my most treasured piano CDs are Gould performances.

The quodlibet is absolutely majestic. IMHO, the Goldberg variations should end with it. Repeating the aria detracts from the incredibleness of the sequence of variations, and the marvelous 30th variation, which is its magnificent apotheosis.

Love that Gould choose to play all the cannons in sequence. You gotta love Bach's rigorous ability to create such highly artistic cannons on all the scale degrees. That must've made him one hell of an improviser. Would be interesting to see what he could've done past the 9th interval or even on the accidentals.

Like Samson and his hair, Gould gained his supernatural ability from his mystical chair! Crafted from wood found on the upper slopes of Mt. Olympus! Touched by the hands of Orpheus himself! LIke the hammer of Thor, the chair would fly any distance, break through any wall or obstacle at the raising of Gould's hand! Even now, the chair sits bolted to a museum floor, to prevent it flying to rest upon Glenn Gould's grave!

"He had to sit exactly 14 inches above the floor, and would play concerts only with the chair his father had made. He used this chair even when the seat was completely worn. His chair is so closely identified with him that it is shown in a place of honour in a glass case at the National Library of Canada."
To those who has the honor of being in his presence and catching the sight and sounds of him singing along were truly blessed.
The sad side to Glenn was he has so much anxiety, and constant self-medication was unfortunately his downfall from suffering a stroke two days after he turned 50. May he rest in peace.

Prior to Glenn Gould, Bach's music played on piano sounded like a Romantic score. G.Gould created a Baroque Sound on the Piano, replicating a Clavichord, or Harpsichord; Keyboard instruments that Bach used, since the piano wasn't invented in his time. I thank God, for Bach, and musicians such as Glenn Gould for bringing his beautiful genius to us...

"GRANDE" e "BRAVO" (in lingua italiana) Gould . Grazie V.V. -:)

Gould at his polyphonic best, playing the Goldberg Variations canons (with aria) 3, 6, 9 and so forth, every third variation a canon. Nice to hear in this unexpected sequence as well as the fresh, unusual interpretation, so different from his other recordings. Is there no end to this man's genius?

folks relax about the vevo; who gives a eff. We are this video available-that is what is important. The thing about gould is his playing looks so effortless and has this whole score memorized reminds us of how much this man has practiced this piece.

@@chrisgrose6248 I hope he didn't have total recall cause that would be really painful for him. Also he hits the wrong key accidentally once in a blue.

actually Gould supposedly didn't "practice" all that much. But he many hours of intense study, reading the score, memorising the notes etc.

@@SteveBennett1 he practiced plenty .....the study of the score an less practice came during his later years

Great recording! What is so great about his playing was the cohesiveness coupled with the individual notes that seem to have their own separate identity.
Others interpret Bach their way. I feel Gould is almost not doing that. To me it is as close you can get to the music itself with the counterpoint so transparently on display. It is the opposite of clinical, an accusation people have thrown at him.
They are not listening. I feel Gould is not getting in the way of the music or less than others anyway. It is the same with his Beethoven works.
This will stay fresh, exciting and deeply moving forever..
