I love to watch this man play these Goldberg Variations over and over❤! His extremely long fingers bounce among the keys, while you see-sometimes hear-him sing the notes with joy, sometimes with seriousness, but never hitting the wrong key! He is an unusual marvel!!
Ever so often true genius reveals itself. I've read and listened to all I can find on this phenomenal musician.....truly stands amongst the finest interpreters of classical music.
I first heard this Glenn Gould performance on an LP in 1954. Later I got to meet him after a concert at the UW/Madison in the 1960s. There he was introducing us to some contemporary Russian composers. Some of my most treasured piano CDs are Gould performances.

The quodlibet is absolutely majestic. IMHO, the Goldberg variations should end with it. Repeating the aria detracts from the incredibleness of the sequence of variations, and the marvelous 30th variation, which is its magnificent apotheosis.

Love that Gould choose to play all the cannons in sequence. You gotta love Bach's rigorous ability to create such highly artistic cannons on all the scale degrees. That must've made him one hell of an improviser. Would be interesting to see what he could've done past the 9th interval or even on the accidentals.
Not just Bach, treat yourself to Glen performing, Beethoven 's piano concerto 5, he was flat perfect there, and it happens to be the best piano concerto ever, brilliance.

He did two, well, canonical versions, one when he was young in 1964 or so, another very different one almost fifty years later. The second one lft me very much with the feeling that he had completed some piece of work he was working on for decades and now he could give himselfpermission to die. Both versions of course superb!

Ahh yes the iconic Glenn with his chair. "He had to sit exactly 14 inches above the floor, and would play concerts only with the chair his father had made. He used this chair even when the seat was completely worn. His chair is so closely identified with him that it is shown in a place of honour in a glass case at the National Library of Canada." To those who has the honor of being in his presence and catching the sight and sounds of him singing along were truly blessed. The sad side to Glenn was he has so much anxiety, and constant self-medication was unfortunately his downfall from suffering a stroke two days after he turned 50. May he rest in peace.
It's pure mythology the independence of the fingers !!!! No human, pianists or not, has independent fingers ... It's not because the fingers do not do the same movement that they are independent.... It's the BRAIN that controls, nothing else !

Gould at his polyphonic best, playing the Goldberg Variations canons (with aria) 3, 6, 9 and so forth, every third variation a canon. Nice to hear in this unexpected sequence as well as the fresh, unusual interpretation, so different from his other recordings. Is there no end to this man's genius?
folks relax about the vevo; who gives a eff. We are this video available-that is what is important. The thing about gould is his playing looks so effortless and has this whole score memorized reminds us of how much this man has practiced this piece.

Great recording! What is so great about his playing was the cohesiveness coupled with the individual notes that seem to have their own separate identity. Others interpret Bach their way. I feel Gould is almost not doing that. To me it is as close you can get to the music itself with the counterpoint so transparently on display. It is the opposite of clinical, an accusation people have thrown at him. They are not listening. I feel Gould is not getting in the way of the music or less than others anyway. It is the same with his Beethoven works. This will stay fresh, exciting and deeply moving forever..

Gold was the original family name, but it was changed (a generation or two before Glenn) because the family didn't want to be mistaken as Jewish.

Yes, and even more fittingly, his last recording was of the Goldbergs, reflecting, perhaps, the Aria da capo in the Variations.
His last recording wasn't the Goldberg Variations. That's an urban myth. The last piece he recorded was Strauss'early sonata.

actually Gould supposedly didn't "practice" all that much. But he many hours of intense study, reading the score, memorising the notes etc.
